Sona vs. Natasha: The Missing Piece of the Puzzle

In recent episodes, various characters have been thinking about, and expressing, how life in the Dixit household will change once Dev is married. Mami and Nikki have been the most vocal about this change, and their comments have weighed heavily on Ishwari's consciousness. She wants Dev to be happy but is terrified that his marriage will make her obsolete in his life. All the little tasks she so loves doing for him will pass on to his wife, and she will be left with no material, every day connection to her son. And her fears are potentially valid... if Dev were to marry Natasha.

I say this with Dev and Natasha's first conversation in mind. She confessed to him that despite her talent for business, her deepest desire was to be an ordinary housewife. I assume this means that after marriage she would prefer to quit working and focus on managing the household, allowing it to define her identity. This is a perfectly valid choice but I don't think the Dixit family is the ideal setting in which to take on that role. As a housewife, in a conventional marriage, Natasha would expect to take on the tasks that Ishwari does now, engendering insecurity in Ishwari (as already seen) and creating a conflict of interest for Dev as to whose domestic management he prefers. For Dev, Ishwari would always come first on principle, which would create a very unfair situation for Natasha without ever fully assuaging Ishwari's insecurities.

On the other hand we have Sona who brings something wholly new and unprecedented into Dev's life. She is a friend and confidant, and most importantly, someone who doesn't count on him being invincible, since she has her own identity and purpose outside of their relationship. His need for her has much more to do with the emotional support that allows him to let his guard down and be himself, and less to do with the day-to-day running of his life. Therefore, rather than an overlap, Ishwari and Sona's relationships with Dev complement each other. Sona is able to anticipate Dev's blind spots with regards to Ishwari -- allowing him to be more sensitive -- and whenever Dev and Sona have a conflict, it is often Ishwari who applies the balm of compassion that softens their anger.

If we dare take a peek into the future, we see two very different possibilities. Sona brings something to the Dixit family, simply by being herself, which Natasha cannot, being herself. Dev and the Dixit family are not ordinary, and Natasha's dream of being an ordinary housewife would not have a chance to flourish in their midst; she wouldn't really be able to enjoy her work because of its constant conflict with Ishwari's. Dev and Sona on the other hand have the potential to carve out a relationship that takes the complexity of the situation into account, a relationship that will exist harmoniously with Dev's devotion to his mother rather than at odds with it.

Beautifully put Sam! Word to everything as usual.. As you so aptly pointed out, Its interesting how the Dixits and their needs in particular seem to go away from the norms that surround a marriage. Its a very refreshing take. I am not looking down on women who assume the role of a housewife after marriage, not at all, but the way these three characters and their relationships with each other so perfectly complement each other is very unique.
Loved your post. And now I really should sleep.. Its 6 AM and I'm supposed to be fasting. God knows how much sense I even made in my own post. 😆

p.s: Your title 😆 I read it and realized that I had planned to add something along those lines in my write-up. So forgetful. 😆

Wow, 6am 😲... that makes your thoughts even more impressive! 😃
Thanks! The Dixits certainly do have singular needs thanks to their history, which has in turn defined the way they relate to one another. And being a housewife is a totally valid choice which deserves respect, but what is most important is finding a partner whose choices and preferences complement yours. I don't see that being the case with Dev and Natasha, and she deserves to find someone with whom she fits.

Hey! Maybe she and Neel Lakotia can hit it off and twenty years from now, when the four of them are still friends, they can look back and laugh at their disastrous "first date" 😆

Nicely analyzed :)

I think at the core of it, it boils down to this...Natasha wants the idea of marriage with Dev more than actually assimilating into his life and relationships. While it's true that she seems to be a mature and pleasant girl, she doesn't necessarily have a one on one equation with anyone in Dev's family.

Even with Dev, in many ways, Natasha seems content to be business-like, matter of fact...thinking that that is what appeals to him.

Sona on the other hand, generally stands out as an individual and has woven her way into all of Dev's relationships...(Let's ignore her abla naari mute act in front of Maami for this discussion). The reason for that ofcourse is two-fold...one, she gets to spend more time in Dev's household on a daily basis as compared to Natasha and the second being her love for Dev probably coloring the way she approaches her equation with everyone in his life.

Also, as you mentioned...she seems to have more ambition in life than simply being a housewife as compared to Natasha...both of them are careerwomen, but have different long term goals...Sona seeks epic and forever love while Natasha seeks the quiet comfort of settling down.

Re: Ishwari's insecurity...but that is yet to fully manifest...Natasha is just the tip of the iceberg...for all of the camarderie b/w Ishwari and Sona will evaporate in a heartbeat when insecurity rears it's complex head in Ishwari's case again...When Sona's deep influence and impact on Dev starts to become apparent, Ishwari will have to face a reality she is yet to face no matter how much Natasha gives her pause.

I must say again...it is Supriya ji's stupendous portrayal of Ishwari that makes even an insecure and sometimes unfairly possessive mother appear like someone you can empathize with.

Bang on dear...👏 Kudos to you for pointing out the difference in Sona and Natasha... And how Dev only need Sona in his life. They are two exactly different human beings. They have different way of living, different way of thinking and handling their problems. But what makes them perfect for each other is their understanding for each other and the way they are always there to comfort the other.
Its only Sona who can provide peace to the always restless Dev, she's the only one who brings the actual Dev out... Who's always hidden infront of the world. He is himself with her. And that makes their relationship more beautiful. She understands his worries and problems and gets involved to solve them provide him relief and he admires that quality of her.

Same is the case with Sona, Dev is the only person who can take care of her more than anyone else could do. His simplicity and goodness is what Sona is in love with. These two are just perfect for eachother. And for now Ishwari is the pillar for them. She treats Sona as a family member and She's the one who always try to solve DevAkshi conflicts.

DevAkshi and Ishwari are the life of KRPKAB.😳

So true. I think even in a crazy hypothetical situation, if Nats and Dev got married, it wouldn't be a solid, lasting one. And maybe they work through it but still, never really healthy. Whenever it's a scene between Nats and Dev, you can see this stiffness, and wall he creates around himself of being a caring gentlemen who thinks of others first. Infront of Sona those wall always break down, his body language screams comfort and he tells her things. If he got married to Nats (hypothetically) they would never have a good relationship because he would just add another person onto his list of people he needs to protect. He wont share his worries and sorrow with her and their relationship would only fall apart. Marriages, and just in general any relation is based off of comfort, trust, and communication.

Great analysis. You have summed it up pretty well.
Since the very beginning, other than her professional qualifications, Dev has admired Sona's strong and independent attitude. She challenged his controling and dominating behavior which no one has ever done before. Even though Dev would be furious when she gives him any advise, eventually he would always end up following whatever she said. He trusts her to always provide him a right perspective specially with matters related to his family.

Even though he was her boss, he always considered her his equal or many times more important than that.
He respects her a lot and understands that like him she has also struggled to reach the position in her career and she supports her entire family. He admires the importance of self respect in Sona's life and defended her when Nats called her a gold digger.

Natasha on the other hand has very different aspirations in her life ( she wants to be ordinary house wife etc) something which surprised Dev. Dev has always described Nats as nice, something which we usually say when we don't have any actual compliment to give. He has shown no inclination towards knowing more about Nats or shared any of his feelings with her. She might not even know the struggle Dixit family has gone through which is very imp thing to understand as they all carry their baggage of sad past.
