Watermelons
"Twinkle!" Kunj shouted, running into the house. "Twinkle!"
"Aayi!" His wife shouted back, her voice echoing in the empty corridors. "What's in your hand?" She asked, coming down the stairs, her eyes glued onto the brown paper bag sitting in Kunj's hands.
"Watermelons!" He replied, his grin ripping his face open. "Look at how big it is!"
He took it out of the packaging and held out the big, dark green melon before her eyes.
"Tarbooz!" Twinkle yelled excitedly, bouncing up and down.
Kunj smacked her lightly on the head.
"Tarbooz ni, mateera."
"Jo bhi ho! Mujhe abhi khaana hai." Twinkle grinned, grabbing onto a knife.
"Oh Miss Amritsar Express." Kunj took the knife from Twinkle's hands. "Jis speed se tum jaa ri ho na, yeh mateera ni, tumhara haat kaate ga."
"Toh tum kaat kar do na." She tilted her head and flashed her dimples at him.
Kunj couldn't help but chuckle at her childish antics. Sometimes it's hard to imagine to Twinkle as a grown woman. Her excitement over little things, her bubbly nature, energetic personality - it all presented her as a naive, innocent and delicate little creature. Someone who didn't know the horrors of the world.
In a way Kunj preferred that. He saw pure light in her and to see that light to waver for even a flicker would pain him immensely.
In that moment, watching Twinkle take a huge bite out of the red, juicy flesh, Kunj was ready to absorb all the darkness in the world. All the horrors, all the pain and all the sufferings. He would take it all just to see that ever lasting smile on her face. To see those big, chestnut eyes shine so bright. To see those dimples make an imprint into her cheeks. To hear that tinkling laughter echo their home till they grow old.
Kunj took a deep bite out of the piece of watermelon that Twinkle held out for him.
It was incredibly sweet.
Just a little less than his wife.
