Many of you were curious to learn more about Azharuddin and those who saw the movie Azhar felt that it was a let down because it does not accurately describe who Azhar was and felt that it did not go far enough to clear many things and seemed more like a white wash to his image. Since I seem to be having some time lately on my hands I decided to write a bit about him.
Azharuddin as a cricketer was a brilliant player. In his debut back in 1984 he scored 3 back to back centuries -- which was unheard and instantly brought him into limelight. He could play wrist strokes with ease and his flicks were impeccable. However Azharuddin as a human or husband was another matter all together. He married Naureen in 1987 who was 16 years old and studying at Rosary Convent school. However after marriage she was allowed to study two more years. She was your next door girl from an average family. Her father used to work in Saudia airlines and both Azhar and Naureen were based in Hyderabad. They had two sons Asad and Ayaz. She supported Azhar through all the highs and lows of his life. These two were the talk of the town. They would have vacations in Paris, and UK and Singapore. But both husband and wife were very humble and chivalrous people.
He was not only making good money but he had also invested wisely buying properties in Hyderabad and Mumbai and they had 9 cars. Some were foreign which he paid enormous amount of duty to import his BMW and Mercedes models. They had a beautiful and posh home and they would host iftaar and eid parties at their home. One time Azhar had given a watch by some sheikh in dubai and one of a relative joked about it and Azhar in an instant gave it away. He would give away his sports shoes, track suits and money to all the poor people. I could go on and on with his deeds but that will steal his karma. Lets just say that a lot of people were saying a lot of good prayers for him and he was reaping the benefits of it all and prospering immensely.
Then Sangeeta Bijlani came into his life in 1993 and they met during a photo shoot. Despite what the movie may show Sangeeta had a plan for him right from the get go. She had just broken off relationship from Salman as he cheated on her with Somy Ali and was looking for her next host and she found one in Azhar. Azhar was instantly smitten with her beauty and grace. The further he would try to control his urges the more she will insert herself into his life and bump into him with her iron grip slowly tightening around him. His wife Naureen was so humble of supporting of Azhar that she blindly worshipped him. Azhar even introduced to her and she looked her in the eye and claimed she is just his friend and needed Azhars help in getting movie roles. Naureen actually told Azhar to help this woman out with his Bollywood contacts.
Azhar first stared cautiously and meet Sangeta on his dime on foreign tours. Few people in our relations began to suspect something was fishy including her brother Nausheed who came to find out about some fishy business. But Naureen had blind faith in Azhar and rebuked her brother from saying anything about her husband. Soon Azhar began to openly roam around her and thats when I saw her with him one day in his car. He asked me to say salaam to her and I was thinking who is she? Azhar would buy her the most fashionable clothes, handbags, shoes and would not say no to her.
This all came to an end in 1996 during the world cup when Sangeeta mysteriously got pregnant. All the team members knew about Sangeeta because she was openly behaving like his wife and accompany him. When he heard she was pregnant his heart sank and he tried to do the right thing by getting married to her. He could marry for the 2nd time but Sangeeta being the ultimate home wrecker made sure that she wants no part of Naureen. She made him call her on the phone and tell her that he is divorcing her. While Naureen by this time had come to learn about his infidelity she was hoping that this was just an obsession and it will soon come to an end but no; Sangeeta had managed to outplay her.
When Azhar broke the news she began sobbing alone in her room. Her mom Ghousia Aunty called up all the relatives to intervene but nobody could do anything. In an instant her whole world was finished. She had worked so hard to tend to her kids, keep her home tidy and clean, cook for Azhar, send food for him and also to his team mates who all loved her cooking and would demand she make this and that and she would be eager to oblige.
He tried to do right to all by owning up to his mistakes and not dumping Sangeeta but in the process he was unfair and unfaithful to Naureen. But to his credit he gave very good financial compensation to make sure she does not end up on the street and she and her kids live a comfortable life. He gave her 1 crore rupees cash, one home in a posh locality, 4 cars and she was able to keep all her jewelry and stuff.
His divorce not only hit him emotionally but financially too. At this same time Sangeeta was unstoppable with his never ending demands for things and when life got tough she pushed Azhar to indulge in match fixing and betting so that he could keep up with her lavish lifestyle. In the end when she too got divorced by Azhar she made sure she drained him real good.
Azharuddin lived a sad life. He hurt a lot of people around himself and destroyed his life as well. He could have done what all other cricketers were doing at that time cheating on their wives but he tried to take ownership instead of treating them like rubbish. Had he not brought his trash home none of this would have happened. Azharuddin also lost his first born son Ayaz in a motorcycle accident in 2011.
Took me a while to write this up so hope you can appreciate and it gives you a better insight to the man Mohammad Azharuddin was.
