Kapoor brothers to revive RK banner
All those wondering when RK Films will make a movie again can relax. The banner plans to start a project with the latest Kapoor in tinsel tonw, Ranbir, in December.
"We are going to get into multiple film production and will also work with directors from outside. After Ranbir's film we have one lined up with Kareena (Kapoor)," says actor-director Randhir Kapoor.
The last film that RK Films produced was the Rishi Kapoor directed Aa Ab Laut Chalen in 1999. Dabboo, as he is called in film circles, was in town for the inauguration of The Showman Show — A Raj Kapoor Film Festival, an exhibition (in association with Zee Cinema) of artefacts from RK Films.
He requests all to bless Ranbir (his debut film Saawariya releases soon) and says, "He is my son and I would like to appeal to your readers and fans of Indian cinema to please bless him and shower him with the love that you have bestowed upon us."
So, will Randhir Kapoor direct the film? "I haven't decided. It may be one of my brothers (Rishi or Rajiv) or I. We could have started the film earlier but Ranbir is doing a film with Yash Raj Films as well, so we have to wait," adds the actor who's acted in some of Hindi Film industry's memorable films like Kal Aaj Aur Kal, Chacha Bhatija, Jawani Diwani and others.
Would he ever remake a Raj Kapoor film? "Where will I get legends like Prithviraj Kapoor, Raj Kapoor or Nargis or the
music of Shankar-Jaikishen? And besides that black and white has its own beauty and charm. How can you turn it into colour?" he asks.
Father Raj Kapoor's co-star Vyjyantimala recently revealed in her autobiography that she had no affair with him. His take?
"It's a gimmick. It's so stupid. If somebody is writing an autobiography she should have the guts to reveal the truth. My father is dead and can't defend himself now. Rishi reacted and the press just blew it up," he says angrily.
The Kapoor family has had a long association with Kolkata (Prithiviraj Kapoor came here in the late 1920s and Raj, Shammi and Shashi spent years of their childhood here).
"We even made a Bengali film Ekdin Raatre. My father could speak fluent Bangla. So, it is like a homecoming for him and the whole Kapoor family, now that the exhibition has come down to Kolkata after Mumbai and Delhi. It's a great idea, though it is not possible to bring all the artefacts from RK Films. I am happy that there is so much curiosity around the exhibition," adds Kapoor, who says the favourite of his father's films is Mera Naam Joker.
"Even my father agreed. He said once, 'All the films that I have made are like my children. But the one which somewhat suffered a bit was MNJ. And like a parent has a soft corner for a weak child, MNJ is special to me.' It is more liked than many of our hit films.'"
So when do we see Randhir Kapoor back on screen? He has done films like Armaan, Censor and Mother 98 of late. "I do not have to act to make two ends meet. But yes, good roles and I am game," he signs off.
