Lata has a gift for reality shows
Sapana Patil Poojary

Lata Mangeshkar seems to have changed her stance regarding reality shows.

The legendary singer, who had previously said that the quality of singers can never be judged through SMS polls, has now decided to gift diamond-studded watches to the finalists of the reality show, 'Voice of India' (Star Plus).

Lata Mangeshkar, who recently met and interacted with the finalists, Ishmeet Singh and Harshit Saxena, has also decided to be present at the grand finale of the show on November 24.

Says Lata Mangeshkar says, "I wanted to gift them something special. So, I thought of gifting them these watches from Swaranjali."

Lata has always been known for her penchant for diamonds and wears lots of them on her too. She is also the brand ambassador of Adora Diamonds.

Lata clarifies that her gesture should not be seen as a recommendation for any singer on the reality show.

Adds Lata, "I don't want to recommend any contestant (through these gifts). I have never done that for any of my family members. One will get work only on the basis of his talent and if it is in his destiny."

Moving on to her favourite subject, she says, "A good singer is an epitome of talent, honesty and dedication. And most importantly, they need to grow as a singer.

Instead of singing songs sung by us decades ago, they need to develop new compositions. The young breed of singers should sing more classical songs

I would have brought up the topic before, but wasn't sure how the mods would react to bringing a rival reality show into the discussion.

Post edited out as the relevant part was indirectly comparing two shows.

VOI finalists, Harshit Saxena and Ishmeet Singh spend an evening to remember with Lata Mangeshkar

musically yours: Ishmeet Singh and Harshit Saxena with Lata Mangeshkar
It was an evening the two Voice Of India (VOI) finalists won't forget in a hurry. On Monday evening, Lata Mangeshkar invited VOI finalists Harshit Saxena and Ishmeet Singh to her residence. The informal chat lasted for nearly an hour… quite a long chat for the otherwise reclusive artiste.

Bring in the new

"They're very talented boys, and the reason why I've agreed to attend the finals is because of their enthusiasm and dedication," says the Nightingale who has recently released two non-film albums of Ghazals and Ganpati bhajans composed by her protg Mayuresh Pai.

Lata is steering away from film songs these days. She says only new talents that are well versed in classical music can bring much-needed change in the industry. She went on to say, "It's always good to encourage new talent. I've supported talented composers and singers all my career."

When asked about his reaction, Ishmeet said, "Lata didi made us sit close to her and sing her favourite songs. She served us samosas, joked, laughed and made us feel comfortable."

VOI producer Gajendra Singh, "They sat for more than a hour with India's most amazing singer, sang for her, while she regaled them with her childlike enthusiasm."

Real challenge

She selected Mere naina sawan bhadow, Musafir ho yaaron (Kishore) and Tere mere sapne and Man re tu kahe na dheer (Mohd Rafi) for Ishmeet and Harshit to sing. Laughs Mangeshkar, "We had a gala time.

They did a fine job of the songs I picked out. But the real challenge for these talented singers is to sing original songs."

Along with doing what she calls the "heartbreaking job" of choosing one of the two as the winner at the VOI finals on November 24, Lataji will also present Ishmeet and Harshit with diamond and gold hand-made watches.

Sorry this topic is more related to VOI than SRGMP so will be moved to the respective section. More because comparisions will get started. Hardly anyone would make sure to limit the discussion to just Lataji's view. And it's quite evident too from one of the replies.

SRGMP Dev Team.
