"Meri Awaaz hi Pehchaan Hain"
Lata Mangeshkar is a name that needs no introduction. Her signature voice is her identity. The melodious, vibrant, mesmerizing rich voice, has enthralled millions of music lovers for decades. Her immense breath control, perfect pronunciation, the feel and melody that she pours in, have made thousands of her songs immortal. She is probably the only singer to have had rich and fruitful associations with multitudes of music directors across several languages over several eras.
In her long reign, her voice has inspired patriots and lovers alike. It has fanned the gentle euphoric ecstacy of first love, fanned the fires of passionate romance, throbbed with the pain of heartbreak, celebrated the seasons, and, in time, have come to epitomize the essence of the very emotions it has celebrated.
The playback singer who made her debut in 1947 with Joglekar's Aap Ki Sewa Mein, continues to sing even today. Lata Mangeshkar has reportedly till date recorded apprximately 30,000 solo, duet, and chorus backed songs in 20 Indian languages since her debut. Forty-six years after she sang that evergreen number "Larelappa, larelappa", composed by Vinod in the film Ek Thi Ladki, Lataji came up with "Didi tera dewar deewana" in the film - Hum Aapke Hai Kaun. Different eras, different lines, different compositions, different technologies, different generations, different tastes and different yardsticks but only Lata Mangeshkar and her melodious, magnetic appeal remain the same. She is truly the "Voice of the Millennium".
