Been a long time since I made a post here. Thought to come back and share a few thoughts since I continue to watch the show even after the mess they have made of it. Let me confess, i don't stick to any show for very long. Particularly one where the third wheel has become a constant presence and worse, her presence has been legitimized on the grounds that a second marriage back then was not illegal.
Like most others here, I was just as furious when the wedding happened. Many might even know that we made much efforts on SM to try and drive some sense into the heads of the creatives/ channel on this count.
Well..it has been two months since then..the third wheel is yet to be outed.
But surprise, surprise, I haven't given up on the show either.
This post is to share a few of the reasons why I still want to give this show a chance. Maybe others like me can share their reasons too.
1. I think the performances have to be the biggest reason why I am still hooked to this show, The quality of performances are way above the norm on desitv.. And I speak of the original cast here when I refer to performances.
The leads are consistent and quite wonderful. Savitri has been a great opportunity for DD to showcase her abilities to negotiate a different dialect, mannerisms etc. She's done a superlative job of it and she has also been exceptionally brave to don the kind of makeup that she has for the part.
Sid did a fantastic job of portraying the violent and disturbed RNJ, under the influence of medication. And now, he keeps us all guessing on where exactly RNJ stands with regard to the whole issue.
Surekha Sikhri's performance is a masterclass in acting, except for when she goes into the OTT space for reasons best known to the creative team.
In fact most actors on the show have been very good and the sheer pleasure of watching good actors perform is a good enough reason to watch the show.
2. The track - Although I quite hated the marriage and the BM tracks, things seem to have taken a turn for the better post the NDE and the new writer coming on board. Savitri is being exceptionally well written and Rana Ji has been turned into a bit of a puzzle that most of us are trying to crack. The dialogues are good and with the exception of a few epis here and there, I think the track is good too. Yes, a little more urgency in disposing off with the character of RAgeshwari would be much appreciated since she seems to have outlived her purpose. Otherwise no reason to crib too much. Of course there are things that I don't particularly like but the good parts more than equal the bad.
3. The story for the most part has stuck to the original premise of a love story against the backdrop of political intrigue. Yes, it is not a conventional love story and yet it is a love that seems to be defying all odds. What is a love that has not survived challenges! Also the characters have been often dumbed down to facilitate the vamps winning and there have been instances where everything seems contrived even not to forget regressive. But these are all the staples of desitv and it is going to be a long time before we see the end of them.
I know that people may ask how can a love story be epic when there the FL is not the ML's sole spouse. But then, Mumtaz was not Shahjehan's only wife either and the Taj Mahal is considered one of the world's greatest monuments to love. So yes, this love story might defy our notions of morality and convention but maybe we should stop looking at the story through the prism of modern gender equations and values. Maybe we should look at it as a story set in a different time where people were not guided by the same laws, principles and morals that we are,
If we started judging the Shahjahan - Mumtaz relationship on the basis of modern day values, we wouldn't ever be able to appreciate the beauty of the Taj or see it as the embodiment of romance and love.
4. The sets and the production values have been great and are quite a relief when contrasted with the opulent and yet bland haveli sets of most other shows.
So yes, there are a few of the reasons why I am not yet willing to write off ETR2 or the beautiful if unconventional love story of RaGa.
Would love to hear from those who are yet to give up on the show, just like me!
