Kaikeyi was a woman who was good at heart but had her set of insecurities. Her childhood was not altogether happy. Though she was loved by her father, her mother was exiled from the kingdom due to her selfishness, so she grew up without a mother's love. Manthara was her nursemaid and raised her life her own daughter, which is why Kaikeyi was so close to her. Manthara taught Kaikeyi that the world was an unsure place for women, so when Kaikeyi was married to King Dashrath, who already had two wives, she was insecure of her position. She did everything she could to become the favorite queen of Dashrath, because she never wanted what happened to her mother to happen to her. Kaikeyi had a more or less good relationship with her co-wives Kaushalya and Sumitra. Though the epic very vaguely indicates that they had their occasional squabbles, they had an overall pleasant relationship.

Despite her insecurities and pride, Kaikeyi was good at heart. She was very intelligent and helped Dashrath make important decisions regarding the rule of Ayodhya. She was an asset to Ayodhya and a very clever politician.

Her love was Ram was real and true. If there is one thing Kaikeyi loved more than life itself, it was Ram. She loved Ram more than she even loved Dashrath. Unlike what SKR showed, Kaikeyi never had dreams of Bharat becoming King. She always wanted Ram to be King, because the politician in her knew he was the right heir to bring prosperity to Ayodhya. Kaikeyi's love for Ram transcended any human emotion, and Ram himself knew this, which is why he never blamed Kaikeyi for what happened afterwards.

Manthara never hated Ram in the epic. She was more or less indifferent towards him. She just loved Bharat a lot, kind of like a granny. Since she raised Kaikeyi as a child, she considered herself Bharat's grandmother and was worried for his future.

When Manthara manipulated Kaikeyi, she did it not because she hated Ram, but because she truly loved Bharat and felt he deserved the throne more. Serials love to portray Manthara as a true vamp, but she was not. She was simply a flawed woman with many misconceptions.

When Manthara manipulated Kaikeyi, she did it by calling upon all her insecurities. She recalled her mother's exile, and talked about her position as the third wife, she brought out all of Kaikeyi's fears and convinced her that though Ram may love her, once he was King his allegiance would be to Kaushalya, and Kaushalya as Rajmata would finally become the principal leading lady once again in the royal harem.

So Kaikeyi's love for Ram never wavered even when she was asking for her boons. She knew he'd be alright in the forests, but she was worried about herself and her future, even more so than her son's.

So no, Kaikeyi was no the ideal woman, but neither was she a vamp. She was a flawed woman, but she had many positive qualities too, and most of all, her love for Ram was true and pure.

The fault with Kaikeyi is that she always believed she was superior to Dasharath's other 2 queens and his favoritism reaffirmed this belief. When she sees that Ram is superior to the other brothers, she wishes he was her son and claims him for herself. When she learns about Dasharath disregarding the promise made to her father, she feels hurt that Dasharath's favoritism did not extend to Bharat, and blames Bharat for not being Ram's equal. This is why she works hard to make Bharat as accomplished as Ram to prove her own superiority. Manthara has been voicing her opinions to Kaikeyi for years, why did Kaikeyi never send her away? If Kaikeyi did not secretly agree with Manthara's words, she would be long gone from Ayodhya.

^^ Kaikeyi never sent Manthara away, because she was like a mother to her. Kaikeyi grew up without a mother's love and guidance, and Manthara being her nursemaid filled that void. So she was no mere maid whom Kaikeyi could dismiss. Though she was annoyed with Manthara often, she was still like a mother to her and Kaikeyi trusted her more than she trusted anyone else.

Kaikeyi's problem is that she always wanted to show herself superior to the other 2 queens of Ayodhya. This is why she only started listening to Manthara during Ram's coronation when she realized that her position of favorite queen would be threatened. Kaikeyi was more desperate to secure the position of Raaj Mata for herself, than she was interested in Bharat becoming king.

Yes.,..there are these other sources that say she was an astrologer and had predicted much earlier that the person who would sit on the throne for those 14 years would die an instant death. Her love for Ram exceeded so much more than Bharat that she was willing to sacrifice her own son so that Ram could live. Hence she took up the all the blame on herself from family and citizens alike so that she could see her Ram alive.
Some other sources also say that it was her father who could understand the language of birds and had known about this much we earlier.
