The memory will forever plague her. Her life had been one of luxury, of mansions, designer dresses and expensive jewelry. She was the treasured daughter of one of the most successful underworld Don of all time. Everyone feared her father, everyone bowed to him. He was a saviour to some but a demon to others. But did she know him as those things? No, no she didn't. All she saw was the man with a bright smile who came to her room at night, bringing her a new toy, a new gift, apologizing as usual for not being present at dinner, for not being present to play games with her, for not being present when she fell and cut her knee. He missed everything but her saving grace was her mother for what her father was absent for, her mother was forever present, encouraging her to eat her food, bringing joy to her play sessions and comforting her when she bled and cry... when she cried for her father's arms.
And then that night came...that dreadful, haunting night of despair. She lay in bed, hugging the new doll her father had bought for her when gunshots echoed in the house. Scared, completely terrified, she had sought refuge under the bed. For fifteen minutes the gunshots continued to ring and she closed her eyes, hugging the doll closer to her chest while her tears dropped to the floor, drip by drip as the gunshots echoed in her ears.
Then there was silence. The quiet of the night descended upon the mansion once more but her ears continued to ring from the gunshots that invaded her ears for so long. She did not know how long she remained under the bed but as the minutes ticked by in agonizing silence and neither her mother nor her father came, she finally mustered the courage to crawl out from under the bed and leave the room.
Step by step, she descended the winding staircase but when her little foot touched the floor, it was warm and wet and red. Her terrified eyes lingered on the dead faces of the only family she knew, whose smiling faces had put her to bed only a few hours ago but who now lay on the floor, their bodies riddled with bullets, their eyes closed in eternal sleep.
An agonized scream filled the mansion that night. It was the scream of terrified 8 year old girl who had lost everything she held dear, it was the scream of a 8 year old girl now made an orphan because of the deeds of the man she called father.'
When she was just a girl
She expected the world
But it flew away from her reach so
People came for her soon and she found herself being taken to an orphanage. Her life which was once filled with mansions, designer dresses, expensive jewelry and hundreds of toys was now but a memory. There was no family she could call her own. She was alone, alone in a world where life had whipped her cruelly and mercilessly. But for one so young and innocent, her mind was still filled with dreams and every night she escaped to those dreams where she saw a new life that she wanted, one filled with love, peace and a family.
She ran away in her sleep
And dreamed of
Para-para-paradise, Para-para-paradise, Para-para-paradise
Every time she closed her eyes
The days went by in the orphanage without point or purpose. The children were taught by volunteer teachers in groups of 20 but little Zoya Ali did not care for mathematics, essay writing, arts or crafts and the other meaningless things she was forced to do. The memory of that painful night continued to haunt her innocent little mind yet only one thing stirred her interest... one thing alone. Whenever the time was gifted to her, she would sneak into the kitchens and watch the cooks preparing the meals and she would also watch the cooking shows on television whenever the other children were outside playing. She wanted to be one of those persons who created all the pretty foods and meals, the cakes and cupcakes, the muffins and...
"Sushi.."- a friendly voice interrupted her privacy and she glanced to her right to see a boy about her age, taking a seat next to her on the floor, his dark brown eyes filled with interest and excitement as he stared at the television. He had dark brown hair and his skin was fair but what struck her was his kind and playful smile- "That's sushi." -he looked at with friendly eyes but she only stared at him in confusion. She had been there for weeks yet none of the other children had spoken to her until now...
"I want to be a chef someday. What about you?"- he continued to say but she stared at him in silence before she replied quietly.
"Me too..."
At her reply, the boy shifted closer to her and held out his hand- "Awesome. My name is Asad. Asad Khan. You are Zoya right?"
Comforted by his gesture, she nodded with a small smile and shook his hand- "Zoya Ali.."
Asad stared at his new friend, pure elation pumping throughout his body. From the first moment he had seen Zoya all those weeks ago, he had wanted to be her friend. But she seemed shadowed by sorrow most of the time which made him question if she would have wanted to be friends with him. However, when he saw her watching the cooking channel during play time, he realized they shared something in common like what friends would do. He had lived his whole life in the orphanage. His parents died when he was a baby and with no family to take care of him, he was left in the care of the people in that building. Days turned into months and months turned into years but no one never adopted him. It was something else he had noticed with Zoya as well. Even though she had been there for weeks, no one was interested in adopting her too. What he didn't know then was no one would want to adopt a girl who was once the child of a drug dealer.
"Do you want to be friends?"- he asked her with a bright smile and Zoya nodded, Asad grinning at her response. When their hands slipped away from each other, they both focused their gazes on the tv once more, Zoya now dreaming of the day she would become a chef.
When she was just a girl
She expected the world
But it flew away from her reach
And the bullets catch in her teeth
Years passed but her friendship with Asad grew stronger with each passing day. He came to know of her past, he knew of her parents and how she came to live in the orphanage but he never judged her on that. She was simply his friend and by the time they reached 16 years old, their friendship grew to something deeper and sacred. They both shared the dream of owning a restaurant together where they would be the chefs and so the time came when they left the orphanage to face the world together with the solemn determination to make their dreams come through.
The beginning of their journey was nothing short of a painful struggle. Regardless of their deep affection for each other, Asad knew he would never do anything Zoya did not want to do. And so even though they lived in the same apartment building, they did not live in the same apartment. They both worked 3 part times jobs at different restaurants and during the nights they would study at either his apartment or hers in order to excel in their exams so that they could win scholarships to attend the top culinary school in the country.
Life goes on, it gets so heavy
The wheel breaks the butterfly
Every tear a waterfall
It wasn't an easy journey. They were now 18 years old. There were many nights Zoya went to bed crying, crying from exhaustion, crying from how difficult life seemed to be at times but most of the times she did not cry alone. Whenever the stress from school and work tested her strength, there was the comfort of Asad's arms around her, assuring her that they would be successful with God's blessings.
"I am going to give you the world someday.."- he told her one night, when the tears came again after her head continued to pound painfully from studying many hours with Asad without rest. She relaxed in his arms, her tears slowly ceasing their fall as she closed her eyes against the gentle rise and fall of his chest- "Where do you want to go? I promise I will take you there.."
She looked at him, a small smile gracing her face when he brushed the tears from her eyes, his affectionate gaze holding hers- "The day will come when we will both own our restaurant and I will give you everything you deserve.."- he said softly, pure confidence shining in his dark brown eyes - "And nothing will ever separate us.."
"Promise?"-she asked with pure hope, Asad nodding at her tender query.
"I promise Zoya..."
She smiled at him and buried her face in his chest once more, the quiet reply leaving her lips a few seconds later- "We should go to Canada to see the Niagara falls. I love waterfalls..."
"I know.." - he muttered into her hair, his smile growing brighter when he felt her grinning against his chest- "I promise you, we will go there together.."
The thunder echoed around them and he glanced at the window where the raindrops were sliding down the glass. Zoya closed her eyes with a soft breath, a wave of comfort washing over her as Asad's arms tightened around her.
In the night the stormy night she'll close her eyes
In the night the stormy night away she'd fly
"Come with me.."- his quiet voice reached her ears and she looked up at him curiously, his smiling eyes searching her beautiful brown gaze- "Come outside with me. We have been shoving our faces in our book for hours now. Let's go outside in the rain."
"But Asad it is late!" - she pointed out but he stood and pulled her to her feet, pure excitement dancing in his eyes.
"That is what makes it even better. Come on Zoya!"- he tugged at her hand and with a grin she followed him out of the apartment building where he pulled her onto the yard, his laughter ringing in her ears while the heavy rain beat against their skins. She did not know what to expect from the midnight shower, but in that moment she felt refreshed and revived, her hopes and dreams glowing within her with renewed enthusiasm as the drops of nature replenished her very soul.
And dreams of
Para-para-paradise
Para-para-paradise
Para-para-paradise
Oh oh oh oh oh oh-oh-oh
Asad's laughter died down as he slicked his hair back, his soft gaze lingering on the girl he had loved before he even knew what love truly was. He meant his every word. He truly wanted to give her the world and every day he laboured and pushed himself beyond the limit just so that they could fulfill their dreams together. With a small smile, he observed her, completely enamoured by her beauty while she spun around playfully in the rain, the smile of pure joy on her rosy lips warming his very heart. When she bounced into him, he held onto waist protectively to prevent her from falling to the ground.
The thunder echoed around them once more as her soft hands came to rest on his chest, their affectionate gazes lingering on each other. Without conscious thought, their faces inched closer together and in the company of the raining skies above them, their shared their first kiss, one filled with complete love and veneration.
"I love you, Zoya.."- he whispered against her lips when they parted, his hands cupping her wet cheeks with endearment while he stared into her eyes with absolute joy which was mirrored in her own- "I always have and I always will. You are my best friend... And the love of my life.."
"I love you too Asad.."- she replied, his grin growing wider at her declaration- "I am lucky... regardless of all the struggles we are enduring I am lucky... I fell in love with my best friend and he loves me too. I am lucky to have you by my side throughout all of this.."
Her sincere words tugged at his heartstrings and he felt himself falling in love with her all over again. His expression softened and he kissed her deeply once more with such enthusiasm that he lifted her off her feet, Zoya grinning against his lips as he spun her around while the rain continued to fall from the heavens.
She'd dream of
Para-para-paradise
Para-para-paradise
Para-para-paradise
Oh oh oh oh oh oh-oh-oh-oh
A few weeks later, the day arrived which she knew she would never be able to forget. Asad rushed into the restaurant where she was currently working her shift and charged into the kitchens before lifting her off her feet much to her shock and surprise, the staff looking on in confusion as his joyous voice echoed in the room- "Zoya!! We did it! We got in!!! We got the scholarship! They accepted us!! They accepted us love!!!"
At his words, she stared at him in shock, her heart beating against her chest with such ferocity that she was certain it would leap out of her chest- "What..."- she muttered in a daze as he lowered her to the floor and removed the envelopes from his pocket which he opened hastily and held out her letter for her.
"You got it! We both did! We are going to the culinary school!" -he cupped her cheeks while her surprised eyes read the words on the paper before her gaze met his- "Zoya... we did it! We are going to be chefs!"
"We got in..."- she muttered and he nodded enthusiastically, the smile soon tugging at the corners of her mouth- "Oh God.. we did it.."
"Yes!! It's our first step! We are going to do it.." -he said with conviction, his confident gaze holding hers- "We are going to own our restaurant soon."
She grinned at him with a nod and he kissed her deeply, the cheers of the employees ringing in their ears, pure joy dancing on their faces.
Lalalalalalalalalalala
And so lying underneath those stormy skies
She'd say, "oh, ohohohoh I know the sun must set to rise"
"Marry me..."- he whispered against her lips when they parted the kiss, his sudden words of euphoria causing Zoya's heart to still in her chest. She gulped as she stared at him in disbelief but his hand only slipped down to her neck as he held her surprised gaze with his expectant eyes- "I know we are young..."
"Asad we are only 18.."- she said quietly and he bowed his head with a nod, his throat constricting slightly at the anxiety that was coursing through his veins.
"I know.. I know..."- he said quietly, his gaze meeting hers once more- "But we are the only person each other has. Zoya we already started living our lives together from the moment I sat next to you on that floor in the orphanage all those years ago. We have been inseparable since then and now I want seal our union. We are going to begin a new chapter in our lives and I want to do so with my best friend as my wife..."- he took a step closer to her, the tears biting Zoya's eyes at the sincerity and adoration which drenched his words- "Marry me, Zoya. Let us take our vows before God we will be by each other's side until death do us part.."
She stared at him, the magnitude of the decision weighing upon her shoulders. Yet as the minutes ticked by, she realized his words were true. They had already started their lives together without neither of them ever really recognizing it, so now this would only be another way to make their bond stronger. - "Ok..."- she said with a small smile, pure joy lighting up Asad's every expression -"I will marry you.."
"YES!!" - Asad lifted her off her feet, his excited exclamation causing the employees to grin at the young ambitious couple whom they could see was very much in love. He kissed her passionately, the cheers of the employees gracing the room once more as he lowered her to the ground and littered her face with kisses, Zoya grinning at his playful antics before he hugged her close. After a moment, he leaned away from her, his eyes widening at the blunder he realized he had made.
"The engagement ring!" - he said with disappointment, his hand touching the back of his head as a heavy sigh left him.
"I do not need a ring, Asad..."- she assured him but he glanced around, his eyes landing on the white string which the chefs used in preparing some of the meals. Without a word, he walked over to the counter and cut a piece of the string before he returned to her and held onto her left hand. Quietly, he wrapped the string twice around her finger before he tied it and brought her hand to his lips, Zoya smiling softly at his tender gesture. How fitting, she thought, that he had proposed to her in the kitchens of a restaurant.
"I promise I will buy a ring soon. This is just temporary to show that my Zoya has agreed to marry me.. "- he said softly as he lowered her hand, his apologetic eyes meeting hers but before he could continue, she hugged him close, Asad relaxing at her comforting embrace as he wrapped his arms around her.

Within the next two weeks they were married by in a simple hall in an even simpler ceremony. The only people present were themselves and the Imam but their company was all each other desired. A few days before the wedding, they had shifted to a bigger apartment closer to their university, the move filled with both excitement and anxiety for the major step they were going to take in their lives. However, they had overcome many obstacles together and they knew that they would overcome even more as husband and wife.
On her wedding night, she found herself standing in front of the window of the bedroom that would now be hers and Asad's and was surprised to find that her anxiety had dimmed, her heart thudding calmly against her chest. Her soft gaze lingered on the moon, a serene smile playing on her face and she wondered why she had been feeling nervous on the days leading up to the wedding. She knew she could not fear Asad's company for his presence was her greatest comfort so she realized she must have feared what that night would hold for her. Was she ready to break all boundaries of intimacy and be one with him?
When Asad entered the room after ensuring the front doors were locked, he paused by the door, a soft sigh leaving him at the mesmerizing vision his best friend...his wife... was. All his life he thought her to be beautiful, but seeing her standing under the moonlight gave her an almost angelic appearance that left his young heart completely spellbound. His soft eyes lingered on her small form as he approached her quietly, his footsteps so light that Zoya only realized he was there when he wrapped his arms around her waist and kissed her neck softly.
"We do not have to do anything you don't want to do.." -he said quietly, his gaze meeting hers but to his great surprise, he did not see any anxiety or hesitation in her beautiful brown eyes. Non the less, he still cupped her cheek and spoke with reassurance- "I will sleep on the floor, ok. I just want you to be comfortable, buddy." -he kissed her cheek and Zoya closed her eyes at his affectionate touch, her heart smiling at his words and his gesture to ensure her comfort first. When he moved to step away from her, she held onto his hand, Asad's eyes meeting hers in slight surprise. With a small smile, she touched his cheek, the moonlight dancing off the simple gold ring on her finger which she wore over the white string he had tied on it before. She was never going to remove that string and would leave it there until it fell out by itself.
"Do you want to do this Asad?"- she enquired softly but she got her reply at the silent desire that was shadowing his gaze.
"Only if you want to Zoya.."- he replied quietly, his heart leaping in joy when she stepped closer to him, her beautiful brown eyes holding his in her hypnotic gaze while the words left her lips with affectionate tenderness.
"I want to.."
The complete trust was reflected in her eyes for him made Asad fall in love with her all over again and wordlessly, he touched her cheek, his eyes burning with passionate desire as he kissed her softly. His heart swelled with complete joy when she wrapped her arms around his neck and together they deepened the kiss with fervour.
That night they explored the boundaries of their own physical intimacy and when their bodies became one, all boundaries and barriers were extinguished as they rediscovered themselves in each other's arms. She was comforted by his tender movements and his affectionate touches which brought her body alive. For Asad, he found that they fit perfectly together for they were two halves becoming whole and complete by their passionate union. Her every touch on his skin fueled his desire even more and when they reached the climax of their ecstasy, their names left each other's lips in pure veneration.

Their journey through culinary school came with its own struggles. There were sleepless nights filled with studying and experiments in the kitchen which more than once required the fire extinguisher. Yet with those sleepless nights, there was also lots of laughter, joy, crazy arguments and passionate love making when tempers were no longer in a fiery rage.
There were also lots of mistakes and a few failures but each step was a lesson which they embraced and used to their advantage to improve their individual skills and knowledge. Soon, they became known the top students in school and the day soon arrived when they graduated with distinctions and fulfilled their first dream in becoming chefs.
For a few years, they worked in a few top restaurants in the state to obtain the valuable experience they knew they needed. They worked and they laboured and they made the sacrifices but all of it was made easier because of the mere fact that they had each other's company to support them during the tough and distressing days.

The years passed, time moved along and now at thirty two years old, she stood in front of a building, Asad's strong arms wrapped around her waist, his lips brushing her neck in a soft kiss while she touched his now bearded cheek with a small peaceful smile. Their gazes meet with undying affection and she still found herself in awe that after all those years, the love in his eyes for her only seemed to increase with each passing day, mirroring the very love she felt for him as well.
They had stood by each other through all the ups and down of the rollercoaster ride their life had been and now, in their loving embrace, their gazes looked to the building where the final touches were complete on the sign which made their hearts swell with pride and rejoice in complete joy. It was a sign they had seen in their dreams and one which was spoken on their lips on many nights when they lay in each other's arms and spoke of the future they both wanted. Now that sign was reflected in both of their eyes and it read...
"Khan Restaurant and Bar."
