Eight-Limbed Girl Operation A Success
Updated:07:12, Wednesday November 07, 2007
An extensive operation on a two-year-old girl born with eight limbs has gone "wonderfully well".
Doctors in India said the child, known as Lakshmi, is safe and stable after more than 24 hours of surgery.
A team of 30 worked round the clock to successfully remove her extra limbs, salvage her organs, and rebuild her pelvis area
Dr Sharan Patil, of the Sparsh Hospital in Bangalore, said: "Beyond our expectations, the reconstruction worked wonderfully well."
Lakshmi was born joined to a "parasitic twin" that stopped developing in the mother's womb.
The surviving foetus absorbed the limbs, kidneys and other body parts of the undeveloped foetus.
Lakshmi was named after the four-armed Hindu goddess of wealth and her parents say she is revered in her village.
The procedure included separating the fused spines along with removing the extra limbs and the rest of the "parasite".
Dr Patil, the orthopaedic surgeon leading the operation, added: "Every step was successful. There was no setback whatsoever."
