I am logging in after a very long time. Even though I have been absent from the forum, I have been following the serial without fail. As far as the proceedings of the show, it has definitely seen it's ups and downs. There has been times when I felt the script was loose and the show lacking the emotional quotient which was expected from a serial like IKRS. for example, what was the reason behind bringing Tanya back? was it just to get Dhani intoxicated? It seemed like the PH was experimenting with characters from the past..
But that is not why I logged in today.
while watching the Episode on Friday, something struck me which has prompted me to come out of my long hibernation.
If KT, being a widow could welcome her future Son-in-Law by doing an Aarthi, why does she or her family prohibit Dhani from taking part in such unctions?
Does the law of Vidhwa Dharam vary with Bank Balance & Status in Society?
Why did the ever so traditional future Saas oppose to a vidhwa welcoming her son?
Why did Maha Pandit find KT's action offensive or treat his DIL with contempt? Why does he not hand out to KT, the same treatment he metes out to the other widows of Banares?
To DT , a widow is an "untouchable" - Pardon me. I do not intend using this word in an offensive way but that is how he has been treating Dhani in the past. Even touching her will make him impure. He went to the extent of disposing the very tumbler she touched. So how does he tolerate his DIL around him or touching the very things he uses?
Has CVs forgotten their own script or is the society in Banares bipolar? Are they partial towards widows from well to do families? Making the Vidhwa Dharam applicable only to a selective few?
It is true that Banares is seeped in old values and cultures. But one should start questioning some customs and practices when they become an hindrance to normal livelihood and well being of the society. Obviously these practices have been coined by a male dominated society.
Lastly, if there is still a sect who thinks that widows are bad omen here's something for them to think about. They should remember, that their country was once ruled by a widow. Times have changed. if society is willing to adapt to new technology then they should also be willing to move away from such backward thoughts and practices.
Rant over. Going back to my books. Take care.
Cheers
