I think it is 7 pheras for the 7 vows that they take.

Pheras - or - circumambulation of the agni - is a phenomenon that developed much later in the northern regions of India. The southern cultures do not have this- we have only the saptapadi - or seven steps. No seven times revolution around the fire.
So how did this saptapadi / saat pheras evolve -?
If we refer to the earliest grahya sutras available, there are a lot more than just seven vows/ promises etc etc. In the 10th mandala of the Rig Veda, where the marriage b/w soma and a girl called Surya we find many more promises /oaths . (Oath / promise is actually a very loose English replacement )
Initially a married person was called shapta-padi.- Which refers to a - A man / woman who walks (and hence, lives) bound by an oath. He / she is oath- bound to his / her partner for life.
In course of time the shapta (promise) got corrupted to sapta (seven) and to give sanctity to this word "seven", seven phrases came into prominence. The actual list is much more
Now- days-of course rituals vary from custom to custom and in the traditions of Northern India the sapta-padi got modified into seven pheras

@Hema is so confident I know 😆😆. I have an analysis and before I put it, let me tell you it is my own POV after going through epics and all.
In Mahabharata there is a mention of Battle formation called Chakravyuha or Padmavyuha. This vyuha has 7 layers. It is said you need very special skills to enter this vyuha and come out. And not many had this.
On day 13 of Kurushetra war Krishna take Arjuna at the opposite direction of battlefield when drona makes the chakravyuha. Abhimanyu enters the chakravyuha with half knowledge and gets killed.
Arjun knew how to enter and exit Chakravyuha, still Krishna took him away because Karna had the weapon Shakthi or power with him against which there is no defense in direct attack. So to protect Arjun from that direct battle with Karna he is taken away as in the protection of Arjuna was the protection of dharma.
If you look at marriage a bride is entering a new home which already has a power structure. I mean established rules, rituals, practices etc...If she enters this place head on, taking decisions on her own it is like Abhimanyu entering Chakravyuha with half knowledge. She will be trapped in the centre with no escape, surrounded by everyone here and there. Because on her own she cannot dismantle the power structure.
So though she knows the bhed of Chakravyuha because Shakti is at the centre it is better she follows her husband's direction in her marital home, till she understands the power structure and the power structure goes on its own and she and her ideas get natural acceptance in her sasural.
In the bandhan of marriage, to break the 7 layers of chakravyuha with power in the middle, she needs the support system and her husband is providing her that.
And I feel only if the couple is able to break this chakravyuha in their married life they will have a happy life going forward as it needs patience, trust and understanding.
