Chapter 4
Silently observing everyone laughing and talking over the breakfast table, Swara sends a quick thank you to God, relieved that everybody politely ignored her change of clothes. Her gaze falls on Sanskar who is quietly having a deep conversation with Ragini. Recalling their passionate kiss just moments ago Swara wonders, "after everything he did in Goa... Yesterday at mum and dad's wedding... Why did I kiss him? Why did I not refuse?" Her conscious bites out guiltily, "that's because you like his kisses... You missed his kisses... Why are you behaving like you don't know," her conscious ends up admonishing her.
Sensing eyes on him, Sanskar looks straight at Swara, surprised by the intensity in her gaze. Unable to resist teasing her, he winks at her before turning his attention back to Ragini. Embarrassed to have been caught staring, Swara looks away.
"Bade papa," Ragini says hesitantly. "Yes beta," Durga Prasad replies with an encouraging smile. Smiling Ragini continues, "papa, Sanskar has just been telling me about the construction project he is working on." "Ah yes," Durga Prasad says with pride, "the construction is nearly over. Soon we shall focus on the interiors." Sitting up, Ragini says, "bade papa, Swara has completed her interior design course. I was wondering, could she assist Sanskar in this project." Turning to Swara, she adds excitedly, "wouldn't it be an amazing opportunity to get some practical experience." Swara glares at Ragini, turns to Durga Prasad and says politely, "I wouldn't want to impose." "Nothing of the sort," Durga Prasad replies, adding, "Sanskar from tomorrow Swara shall join you. Why don't you discuss the details before she and Ragini head home." "Yes, bade papa," Sanskar replies, thinking, "damn that was easy."
Closing the study door behind him, Sanskar looks at Swara who had her back to him. Hearing the door click, Swara turns around, glares at him, wanting to know what he is playing at, instead asks, "why did you kiss me?" Noting the surprised look in her eyes as she questions him, Sanskar realizes that she had not intended to voice this question aloud. Deciding to take advantage of the situation, he replies honestly, "I wanted to kiss you. I missed kissing you." "Why did you kiss me?", Sanskar asks. "Because I wanted to," Swara replies, realizing she too felt the same. Walking towards her, Sanskar says, "why did you ask, if you felt the same way." With a hint of vulnerability, Swara replies, "do you blame me... After Goa and yesterday..."
Running his hand through his hair, Sanskar says, exasperated, "I am an idiot... I am trying to make amends." "Why?," Swara asks skeptically. Giving her a pointed look Sanskar says, "maybe I like you... Maybe I miss you." Reading the disbelief in her eyes, Sanskar says, "I think it is only fair that I should explain my actions. I am not making excuses, but I would like you to understand why I did what I did."

Swara walks into her home in a daze, a silly grin plastered on her face, recalling words that made her heart flutter... Maybe I like you... Maybe I missed you. "Swara," Sharmista says, shaking her slightly, "where are you lost." Coming back to the present,Swara pulls her mum into a tight hug, grinning, says, "mum I am so happy." "I can imagine," Sharmista replies. Surprised, Swara exclaims, "you know! How?" Surprised by swara's reaction, Sharmista replies, "Ragini just mentioned it." "earth calling to Swara," Ragini teases, adding, "get off cloud nine and let's prepare for your first day at work." "Ah," Swara thinks, "work. Duh!" Smiling she says, "sure... Let's..."
Dida walks into Sharmista's home, observing the happy glow in Swara, happy, she states, "Swara is very happy today." Sharmista greets her mother and replies, "yes she is. She shall be assisting the Maheshwaris in one of their building projects." Her smile faltering, did asks, "how is she going to assist them?" Not reading the tension in her mother, Sharmista continues happily, "one of their projects has reached the interior design stage. Swara shall assist Sanskar with the interior designing." Frowning, Dida says, "you know I don't like them. I don't want Swara to take this offer." "Mum," Sharmista says, "you need to give me more than 'it is just a feeling I have'. Why do you dislike the Maheshwaris? They are Ragini's inlaws. They are family."
Shrugging her shoulders, trying to hide her frustration, Dida says, "I don't have a reason... I just have a feeling." "Well I can't ask Swara to make such a sacrifice over a feeling," Sharmista replies, adds reassuringly, "mum you worry too much. Swara is safe with the Maheshwaris. Nothing will happen." Recalling past memories... Of Sanskar on his knees... Heartbroken... Dida replies, her tone infused with worry, "I hope you are right Sharmista."
******************
Leaning on the wall, smiling, Sanskar asks, "any ideas On the deco?" Excited, Swara begins to describe how she would go about transforming the vacant apartment into a home. Weeks go by Sanskar and Swara become a formidable team as they work side by side. Swara who was initially infatuated with Sanskar slowly falls headlessly in love, unaware of the deceptive game Sanskar is playing.
Hugging him tight, her eyes shining with love and happiness says, "yes I shall marry you." Breaking their hug, Sanskar, eyes shining with passion, caresses her lips with his thumb, stroking downwards, rests his thumb on her chin, lifting her face slightly upwards as he bends down to kiss her drowning out his guilty conscious.
Murmuring against her lips, he asks, "what if your family refuses?" "My family won't refuse," Swara replies confidently. "What if they do," Sanskar persists, "will you leave me... Will you break you promises." "They won't," Swara replies, smiling, sure that her family would have no issues with her marrying Sanskar.
Knocking on the open door, Maya Raizada says with a smile, "sorry to interrupt." Swara steps away from Sanskar embarrassed. Sanskar frowns and says, "I don't recall a meeting being set up." "No meeting," Maya replies, adding, "just thought to try my luck." Her eyes laughing silently at what she had just witnessed. Clearing his throat, Sanskar says, "excuse us Swara."
Watching the door shut, Maya turns around to Sanskar, smirking as she walks towards him, saying, "shame on you for playing with her." She leans forward... Sanskar turns to his side... Her kiss landing on his cheek. Laughing huskily, not the slightest bit offended, she asks skeptically, "feeling guilty?" Ignoring her, Sanskar walks around his desk, sits on his chair, asking, "why are you here?"
Staring at him with a smug look, Maya asks instead, "so how long is this going to go on?" Sanskar looks at her with annoyance, replies, "none of your business." Enjoying his silent anger, she asks, "has she accepted the role of your mistress?" Seething, fire n his eyes, Sanskar leans forward, replies furiously, "none. Of. Your. Business.", he repeats.
Sitting back, smirking, Maya replies, "falling in love... Are we..." Sanskar stares at her, his fury spiraling out of control. Placing her hands up, gesturing surrender, Maya says smiling, "no more teasing... Sorry, I was curious... I don't care who you kiss or screw..." Relaxing slightly, realising that she was purposely winding him up, he says, "damn it Maya... What the f**k was that?" Shrugging, Maya replies, "just showing you the mirror
Scowling, Sanskar says, "I don't need a mirror." Leaning forward, Maya says softly, "we don't need to marry... We can have the merger without marriage." "We are not marrying for the merger... But marry we must," Sanskar says, a glaze in his eyes as his memories race towards his past. Maya frowns, "and what of Swara," she asks. Shrugging, Sanskar asks, "what of her?"
"She is falling in love..." Maya says. "Yes she is," Sanskar replies with a smile. "Since marriage and merger does not go hand in hand... Why not marry her," Maya asks. Wiping his smile off his face, Sanskar says coldly, "just because someone is good enough to kiss or screw... Does not mean that person is good enough to marry."
