I think that's exactly what happened here. He was really applauded a few days ago when he talked about a fan not feeling stylish and not wanting to be in a picture. So when the drama with Sonakshi started he probably saw another opportunity to show himself as a progressive feminist. It blew up in his face!!

As for Sonakshi, I think sometimes she confuses reality with a Bollywood movie. Just because a line gets applause and whistles in a movie theater doesn't mean it's appropriate for real world.
