Hey guys, This may not be the exact place to ask but since its related to Bollywood so I ask here. Is it OK for a total outsider to make a career in this entertainment industry??

Here's my friend (one of my bestie should i say) who is planning to make a career in Bollywood and so she has even started making her portfolio!! I worry about this since I know the kind of place she is getting into (thanks to this forum), which is not good atleast for the woman I know and she's hell bent on defying me that not all the people out there in Bollywood are same(which I agree but still as a friend, concerned). Not that I am discouraging her but I even said to try something on TV first as some movie actors are from television , take it step by step plus its also way better than this big bad Bollywood world! ( I hope so, idk much about TV though)

I don't know if she will ever land up a role or something in any movie but I do hope that she doesn't face any compromising situation that indeed is relevant in this field!!

I posted this to get any advice as to should she take it up or stay away from this profession ?? I know at the end of the day its her life and her decision whether to pursue this career or not but a little advice from friends won't hurt, isn't it?

I kind of understand where your friend might be coming from as someone who has grown up watching Bollywood and has secretly always wanted a career related to it. I've always said to my friends jokingly though ( in fear of being ridiculed) that I want to become a Bollywood actress even though I have my BSc and am still continuing my studies. Obviously, even though it's unrealistic because I would never have the guts to drop everything and move to Mumbai by myself ( I'm Canadian), it's something I secretly wish I could pursue or at least have the guts to - Your friends is basically me with guts, and if she wants it as bad as I know I do ( if not more) nothing anyone says will change her mind. At the end of the day, that's her dream and no one has the right to tell someone they can't at least TRY to achieve a dream of theirs. Yes, even though there are risks, she's willing to take them and if she does face road blocks/problems you should be there supporting her THEN. THAT'S what you can do.
Hope this helped.

The way I see it you and anybody else is in no position to offer her any advice. We don't have any industry experience at all.
Also casting couch is a thing which shouldn't shock anybody anymore. Many college girls are ready to sleep with strangers for as little as 10k. So its not like very few girls would be ready to do such a thing for such big opportunity. I don't know what happens in the industry and you really can't form an opinion based on rumours and magazine articles.

In my college there was a very fat guy. He was filthy rich. He lost a lot of weight once he got determined and became pretty fit. People started giving complements. He took them way too seriously and after graduation he decided he wanted to try in bollywood. He struggled for 3-4years. We kept hearing rumors that he got a movie, he is second lead to shahid kapoor, etc etc etc. But all were false. His parents supported him for 5 years and when nothing happened he went back, got married and joined his dad's business. Even with so much money, good contacts, he couldn't even get a TV show.

So all said, bollywood is probably the worst place for an outsider. For girls its still looks little easy compared to guys.

At least I have never heard about total outsider getting a movie

Those outsiders who have entered in bollywood were either models or TV actors. Only portfolio is not enough, ask her to make her career in modeling first or work in a daily soap but all daily soap actors can't be lucky like SRK. By working into daily soap she would get opportunity to make contacts. There are people like Rajeev khandelwal, Vidya Balan, Yami Gautam, KSG, SSR who entered in bollywood through TV. They didn't achieve much but atleast they entered in bollywood.

But it's not easy.

If she is from rich family then she should go on with her dream, so that even she fails there won't be any financial problems but if she is from middle class family and earning is important for her then drop that idea. It's not at all a cake walk.

Hopefully, she is not quitting her studies. In case if her dream does not materialise, she should have an alternating career. Irrespective of our careers, we all need a back up plan.

If she is so determined, don't say anything negative. (She will go anyway, but with negative feel). Join her in her happiness if she succeeds. Be supportive, if she fails. ( Never say, "I told you before". They neither want advice before. Nor want any preaching when they are feeling low).
She has the right to experiment, even if the chances are 99% failure. As a friend, lend your shoulder whether she is happy or sad. That is all one can do and one should do.

You have good intentions but don't discourage her! Let her follow her dream! She is an adult and should know what she is getting into.

I am curious how passionate is she about acting and performing? Is she really talented?
Has she taken any acting classes?

Bcz most people want to get into BW just for the glitz, glamour, fame and fortune

That might be a wrong approach unless you are a starkid (or atleast from a filthy rich family) then you can dabble in BW with no talent or passion and not get burned

In bollywood and television casting couch does exists. Many girls and boys reach Mumbai to fulfil their dreams and become paid high society sex workers. Some make 5 thousand an night and some make over 10 lakhs a night.
Instead of going to Bollywood directly your friend should try hand in modelling. She can start with photography campaign and then go for ramp modelling. She can also try her hand in shows like kingfisher calender girl, India's next supermodel etc.
Ask her to invest in her wardrobe as she may have to go to networking parties. She should learn high society etiquettes of meeting people and conducting oneself in social occasions. She should learn to network and not be uncomfortable in such situations. If required she may have to sleep with some biggie for a role. Ask her to stay away from drugs and do not have affairs with married men.
