Ramya,
A wonderful post and fascinating discussions thereafter. Yes, we are turning to western writers to validate our own heritage and wealth of learning!

I think as we need to delve more and more into our rich knowledge of the past, our Vedas, and other sources of knowledge, we also need to introspect why we lost all this in the first place, and why do we turn to foreign writers to learn about our own past.

A large part of this reason of course is the fact that for 200 years of British Raj we were schooled into dismissing our great ancient past. But now we have had almost 70 years of independence, today we celebrate our 67th republic day, the present generation has been born and brought up in independent India, with no shackles of being continuously told how we are inferior and meant only to serve the "white masters".

our national pride is at an all time high, and we are now globally recognised as a country with brains! Time is now ripe for our education system also to break the shackles of the outdated Macauley system of learning, and to encourage the true spirit of enquirer, scientific thinking, pathbreaking research and innovation right from school level.

We also need to respect divergent thinking and go back to the tradition of shastrarth- the sprit of free debates where learned men where free to introspect and fearlessly share their ideas, that is the atmosphere which will once again foster creativity.

While we learn from the past, let's also remember that our great gurus gave this rich leagcy, not by resting on the glories of the past, but by questioning it, challenging it, and by inventing, innovating, creating.

So let's be proud of our legacy, but let's not treat it like a holy cow, and something sacred - let's examine it and learn from both the good and bad

As I write this, the news about women planning to walk into the inner sanctotum of the shani temple is playing on the tv amid local protest against breaking of this tradition and the police bandobast there.

This is the disconnect between life and religion that we are living with today, where one of us can become a prime minster, an army officer, a world badminton champion, a doctor, a ceo, but cannot enter some temples !

If our ancient glory is to be regained, then we have to restore the faith of all in our dharma, and that can only happen if we give equal status to all - regardless of gender, caste, colour, religion etc.

Sorry long post, but I got carried away by the wonderful topic you chose and the spirit of the republic day!

@Arshics: I liked ur take. Perfect picture of current scenario. Why we followed foreigners should be our history and what we follow currently should be the path created for our future. Yes, my question is british ruled us for nearly 200yrs but before that also we had a beautiful history of our country, why even that previous portion is also viewed by their eyes? We became slaves just by not understanding who we are and what we are together. Right now our next generation should know this and stand for them. These fundamental issues are clearly illustrated in our epics. That should be taught to our future generations in our way and not by westerners view. They should feel that science was told already and not just in recent past. This is my POV.
When I told my sir while talking abt the discovery of many galaxies, the varaha avatar rescued the earth from cosmic waters, why cant the waters be in any one of other planet in other galaxy? He told you people claim the discoveries to be told already in epics/puranas why dont u pick a thing and prove it? Yes he is right we have to do it not only to prove others but to bring the buried truth.
As u said, today while we celebrate the republic day we make sure that our next generation will be freed from maya foreign culture.

The problem Charvi is of not just claiming, but proving beyond doubt.

Let's take the example of sanjay's divya drishti -

Possibility 1 : it was a divine miracle - hence its not reproducible, and also there's nothing we can teach the world about it - except wait for another Sanjay to be born -

Possibility 2 : It was creative imagination and writers originality - excellent story telling and possible an inspiration for someone to actually invent the television - at best - we dreamed it before the world did of kind of - but we can't lay claim to innovation, only to imagination

Possibility 3 : we actually had the technology of televiewing - as some of our leaders are proclaiming - then we have no remanats of it at all - which is improbable - any invaders would have taken it and capitalised on it, but not destroyed it so badly that it's very existance is doubtful - technological advances are not known to have ever reversed!

Well, as for Sanskrit - languages are also dynamic and fluid, and many ancient languages have ebbed away, and even now every day we see the nature of language and speech changing!

I think the real treasure we had was that we were technological ahead of the world then, and spiritually and cultural far far more mature and evolved as compared to the the western world, but to say that we were thousands of years ago technologically on par with the world today - is a stretch and not a claim we can make without doubt.

@Arshics I feel proof is there for some of the things. But those proofs are not coming out or are presented not rightly. For example Hollywood for past 50 years was making US save world from imaginary aliens and dinosaurs. But it took us 25 years to portray a true incident of saving 1lac plus people in airlift movie. As you rightly said time is now ripe to understand our roots so that we don't have to search elsewhere for inspiration.

you said it right...
we have a rich heritage of all which has a purpose and meaning behind it
since we were invaded we slowly started to loose our independent knowledge and forget our inheritance, that's why now when westerners are coming up with new technology we Indians realizes that it was there with us all along our lives, just that we ignore it back and forth
