Part-1:
Jodha ordered all her maid not to disturb her till she does not respond from her own and locked her inside her chamber after she stepped in after the most pathetic confrontation with her husband. She was tired, she was angry, but above all, she was devastated! She has lost... She could not keep the promise she had done to the fevered, sick and almost dying lady, whom she uses to call MOTHER! Yes, she IS her mother; the mother to whom she had promised to bring her son for once but... Jodha Sighed! She could not. She could not. Her devil husband had no time, no responsibility and no feelings to come to his mother who is fighting with her death!
FLASHBACK:
Jodha sought the attention from his majesty from outside of his room after a bit hesitation. She does not even like to see his face, conversing with him is like a curse for her, but still...still she had to come to him from her own; she had promised her mother!
"Ayiye Jodha Begam; Ayiye. Na jane kiski muh dekhke subha aankh khuli thi humari ki aap hume milne aa gayi!"[Come Jodha Begam Come. God knows whose face I had seen after opening my eyes today morning that you have come to me.] Jalal chuckled while putting on the over-coat, as he was getting ready to set off to a nearby city due to a political agenda.
"Kuch maangna hay hume aapse. Denge?"[I want something from you. Will you give me?] Jodha did not take a moment to come to the main topic ignoring his playful tone.
"Firse maang! Waise yeh to hona hi tha!" [Again a want? It was bound to happen though!] Jalal exclaimed in a flirty tone. "Aap ko to srif maangna hi aata hay! Hume kuch deneke bare me soch bhi sakte hay kya aap?" [You only know how to want! Can you even think of giving me something?] His tone was meaningful, and Jodha is nowadays very much familiar with this kind of talks from this man. So she did not lose her cool, but kept on standing her head held high, with full of her dignity. She will not respond before his majesty gives any straight and positive response of her question.
"Jaldi aapni maang humare samne pesh kijie Begam Sahiba..." [Present your wish in front of me quickly Begam Sahiba] Jalal smirked while setting his hairs in front of mirror before wearing the turban. "Oh aaj hum thori si jaldbazi me hay."[Actually I am in hurry today.]
Jodha could not help but to be surprised with this man. His mother is so much ill, doctors are not giving much hopes of recovery and he does not care! A man can be cruel for the rest of the world- but how can he be so cruel with own mother! Even animals do love their mothers...
"Ammijan aapko dekhna chahte hay." [Mother wants to see you.] Jodha stated. She forgot all the speeches that she had prepared to make him understood. She only uttered the single sentence and became silent.
"Aap yeh batane mere paas ayi hay?" [You have come to me to tell this only?] Jalal could not help but to be surprised. After a moment he said, in a serious tone. "Humne unhe paigam bhejwaye the ki hum aaj unse mil nehi payenge. Kisi zaruri kam se Agra ki bahar ja rahe hay hum. Fir bhi agar unhe aap ko bhej ne ki zarurat mahesoos hua ho to unhe bata dijiye ga ki..." [I had sent her message that I will not be able to meet her today. I am going out of Agra for an important work. After this if she has thought to send you to me then go and tell her that...] His voice was adamant and as hard as rock. "Unki bekar zasbaato ke liye humare pass waqt nehi hay! Agra loutkar hum zarur Marium Makani se roobaroo honge..." [I have no time for her useless sentiments. I will surely meet her after coming back.]
"Aapke liye yeh accha hoga ki aap unse mil le!" [It will be good for you if you meet her!] Jodha was not willing to say anything more to this heartless person after his last words. But still she kept on. "Kyuki ho sakta hay ki jabtak aap laute o aapse itna dur chali jaye ki aap unse mil hi nehi paye! Fir Shahenshah ki bachan mithya ho jayega!" [As it may happen that she reaches to such a distance after you return that you will be unable to meet her! Then the promise of the emperor will be proven lie!]
"Kya?" [What?] Jalal asked in a confused tone as he was unable to make out any meaning from her words.
"Aapki maa mrityu sajya me hay! Do din se behoos hokar pare hay o! Srif aapke naam le rahe hay! Aap ko dekhna chahte hay or aap... " [Your mother is in deathbed! She has been unconscious since 2 days! She is only murmuring your name and you...] Jodha could not hold her dignity and almost shouted with all her emotions. She could not prevent her tears to come out from her eyes. Her eyesight became blur for a moment, so she was unable to point out whether there was any change in his majesty's expression; but after a moment when he spoke again, there was a strange surprise in his voice.
"Ammijaan bimaar hay, or hume kisine bataya bhi nehi!!" [Mother is ill, and none has cared to tell me!]
Is not it a responsibility of a son to know about his mother's health apart from all his duties in outer world? But Jodha was not much surprised with his reaction. Rather she felt guilty for thinking so many things about him before knowing the actual reason. It is not an unbelievable fact that the emperor son does not know about his mother's illness... It happens in every royal family, many of the male members of the family do not know about the condition of health of the women who live behind the curtain. She toned down a bit and spoke in a humbler tone. "Aap ko pata nehi?Zukham or thora sa bukhar sayad pehele se hi tha. Dhyaan nehi diye the unhone... Fir kuch din se baat itna bigar gaya ki..."[You don't know? Cough and a little fever were there perhaps from first and she ignored that...Then the thing became so worse after that...] she could not hold her sob. "Bukhar jaane ka naam nehi le raha hay! Itna durbal ho gaye hay ki aankh bhi nehi khol rahe... Srif aapki naam le rahe hay o!" [Fever is not decreasing! She has become so weak that unable to open eyes...Only taking your name.]
"Hume kisine bataya nahi! Hume..."[None had told me... I...] Jalal walked to the door murmuring those words and then called out. "Badi Ammi..."
The cunning and screwed lady in the outfit of a seraphic nun maybe was just behind the curtain of the room as she came inside after just a minute. She first threw a cold look on Jodha's face, as she was the first one who protested Jodha to go to Jalal, and then started talking with Jalal.
"Kya hua Jalal?" [What happen Jalal?]
"Ammijan ki bimari ke bare me mujhe kuch kyu nehi bataya gaya?" [Why I was not told about my mother's illness?]
Mahamanga again gave a sheer cold look on Jodha and smiled to Jalal. "Hume pata tha ki aap khamokha chinta karenge. Iss liye nehi bataya aapko.Thik ho jayenge Marium Makani... Desh ki sabse bari Hakima unki ilaaj kar rahe hay. Aap jyada mat sochiye..." [I knew that you will do tension unnecessarily so did not tell you. Marium Makani will be alright. The best doctor of the country is curing her. Don't get tensed.]
"Badi Ammi hum soch rahe the kyu na yeh kam kuch din ke liye taal diya jaye? Hum abhi Agra se jana nehi chahte."[Badi Ammi cannot this job be postponed for some days? I don't want to leave Agra right now.]
"Kyu Jalal?" Maham asked with the hidden excitement in her voice as this visiting is very important for his son's carrier. Adham will certainly get a promotion after this. So she again tried to assure him. "Aap Mallika-E-Azam ke liye chinta maat kijie. Yeaha hum sab hay na unke pass! Aap ki rahene se or na rahene se kya ho jayega!"[Don't think about Mallika-E-Azam. We all are with her! What will matter in your presence or absence?]
"Shahenshah aap ekbar Ammijan ki sar me haat rakhenge to unhe shanti milegi! Ekbar unse mil..."[Shahenshah if you go to mother and keep your hand on her head she will get peace! Please go to her...] Jodha had become overexcited while talking these to express her viewpoint over Mahamanga's conclusion; but she was terribly terminated by Jalal's eyes- the angry, red, cruel eyes; but were not there a little fog in those eyes too?
"Hum humari ammi ke paas jayenge yeah nehi uska faisla aap karenge?"[Will you decide it that whether I will go to my mother or not?] Jalal hissed with a strange disgust in his voice. "Humari rahene yeah na rahene se Ammijaan ko koi farq nehi parta hay! Kabhi nehi para, aaj bhi nehi parega!"[Nothing changes to my mother with my presence or absence. It had never made any difference, neither will it do now!] There was something else in his voice other than adamancy and disgust- but what was that Jodha could not understand. But she was stunned. She was stunned to see a son's peculiar reaction after knowing his mother is in serious condition! He does not want to see his mother! Seriously!
"Haa Jalal, Marium Makani ke liye yeaha bohot sare log hay. Aap chinta maat kijie. Aap bejijak hokar aapni safar me jaiye..."[Yes Jalal, there are many people to take care of Marium Makani. You don't get tensed and go for the journey...] Mahamanga told at once.
"Humne kaha na ki hum safar me nehi jayenge? Taal dijie safar ko!!"[I said that I don't want to go! Postpone the program!!] Jalal lashed out without any reason to her. "Hum kahi nehi jayenge..." [I will not go anywhere...]
"Jalal aap..." Maham kept her hand on his shoulder.
"Agar khuda na kare humare ghair-maujudgi me agar ammijaan ke sath kuch ho jaye to bohot pareshani hogi! Adha rasta jake aagar fir se lautna pare to..."[God forbid, if something happens with mother in my absence then we will be in problem! If I have to return from midway then...] Jodha surprisingly looked that Jalal's voice did not tremble. His eyes did not move. How easily without any hesitation he uttered the words about his mother's death! He does not care whether his mother is dead or alive. He only wants to stay as he will face problems to return if the she dies in midway!
"Are yeh...yeh kya kahe rahe hay beta!"[What are you telling my son!] Even Maham was touched with the coldness in his voice. "Kuch nehi hogi Mallika-E-Hind ko..." [Nothing will happen to her...]
"Nehi nehi...Badi Ammi hum nehi jayenge... Kuch din baad agar raoyana hue to jyada farq nehi parega!" [No no... Badi Ammi, I will not go. If we set off after some days nothing will hamper!] Jalal, after telling this, suddenly looked at astonished, hurt Jodha... "Aapko jane ki izazat hay Jodha Begam."[You are free to leave Jodha Begam.] He said.
"Ghrina bhi aap ke liye bohot kam hay Shahenshah!" [Hatred is also not worth of you Shahenshah!] The shocked, distressed young lady murmured and stormed out from the room!
FLASHBACK ENDS.
Jodha has not ever thought her husband has any good quality of a human being since she has been married before one month. But today her hatred was not enough to define her feelings for him. How can a son be so cruel to his birth-mother! How can a son remain unmoved after hearing about his mother's condition? How can he state the presumption of her death so coolly!
Jodha again wiped her tears. If really anything happens to ammijaan where will she go? There is only a person in the whole palace who is Jodha's own. In this prison of her so-called marriage Jodha can only find the happiness of freedom in her company! If that freedom is also snatched from her how will she live?
Perhaps Jodha felt today that how much she loves the lady who is so much different in her culture and religion, and whom she did not know only before a month. She calls her mother; and she is not less than her mother... Such a lovely lady, who spreads the light of motherhood in her smiles, whose warmth of affection can be felt by even a mere maid of the palace, is being neglected by her own son whom she has given birth after bearing so much pain! What a cruel game of destiny!
For the first time after her marriage Jodha felt something different for her husband. And that is pity... What else can be felt for the man who has no ability to feel the love of his own mother?
It the afternoon Jodha dared to come in the sick queen-mother's room. She was as lifeless as before; with her closed, unconscious eyes. "Subha ke baad or ekbar ke liye bhi hosh nehi aya!"[She did not get consciousness after morning!] stated the doctor with lots of anxiety in her experienced face.
Jodha sat beside her Ammijaan and took her hands in her palms. She could not hold her tears and break down in cry... "Hum nehi kar paye Ammijaan... O nehi aye!!"[I could not Ammijaan... He did not come!] she sobbed.
"J..J...Jal...lall!!" The middle-aged lady, who has almost been mingled in the bed, murmured unconsciously. Her voice was weak, too low to be heard, but still Jodha could make it out. "Abhii bhi gussa hay humse beta!!" [Are you still angry with me my son!!]
Jodha wiped out her tears and kept on starring at her ailing face. She could connect the emotions of the mother and the son now. She could guess the reason of the uncanny attitude of his majesty now... He is angry...Still angry!
"Humari rahene yea na rahene se Ammijaan ko kabhi farq nehi para!" he had said. Jodha was not looking at his eyes, was not paying heed to the changes of the emotions in his voice... But still, after thinking she can easily remember the hidden grief in the grudge when he uttered each and every word. Jodha smiled sadly. Does he really believe that his presence matters nothing for his mother?
She was feeling pity to him before some times. But now she realized that she was feeling something more. She was feeling his pain somewhere in her heart. Is not it strange? Her heart is weeping for such a man whom she hates the most!
Poor emperor! How easily you believed that you mean nothing to your mother! As you were always thirsty for your mother's love, for the warmth of your mother's lap in your childhood, your grievance did not let you to come to your mother now; but you could not think that the same mother was suffering in the same pain of you; of not taking you in the lap, of not kissing you. Poor emperor, you always have felt the pain of the detachment from mother; but have you ever thought that your mother is crying in the same pain- of not cuddling you in her lap?
