The flip side to Shoaib Malik[Interview]
'I was a good student all through my academic life. But I was always passionate about kite-flying.'
Who says cricketers eat, drink and sleep cricket? We caught up with Pakistan cricket team captain Shoaib Malik for a tte--tte that proved this notion wrong.
For a change it was an off-the-field conversation which reflects the lighter side of this young sensation who has a lot to say and a lot to do besides cricket.
Q: What is your favourite pastime?
A: I am very much into indoor games such as snooker and table tennis. I am an avid football fan and never miss a soccer game when Brazil is playing, since that's my favourite team. In my all-day hectic schedule, whatever time I get I like to spend it with my family as they are the most important people in my life.
Q: What qualities should a good captain have?
A: Well, a person can be a good captain if s/he has the ability to take the right decisions at the right time. Also, s/he has to be a good listener.You cannot dictate professional players and have a bossy attitude. You need to understand their point of view as well.
Q: What is the key to your success?
A: Dedication, sportsman spirit, hard work and patriotism are the factors through which one can achieve success and make one's dreams come true.
Q: Tell us something about your school life and your interests.
A: I was a good student all through my academic life. But I was always passionate about kite-flying. My father wanted me to become a cricketer. He would get me a kite in return for each match I played. He supported me when I went for matches with a cricket kit in my school bag. Literally, I used to carry my sneakers in that bag so that no one would know and I would eventually land up on a cricket pitch instead of the school ground. But I was not lucky for long as I got caught once by my elder sister. I still remember that slap.(awww....đ)

A: Both!

A: Lahore for sure, even though I have stayed in Karachi for 10 years.

A: Snooker.

A: Dil Chahta Hai.

A: Tere bin mein kaisa jiya and Chal dil mere?

A: 148 not out (his highest one day score).
