Rains claim Goregaon designer's life
Resident of Gokuldham, Goregaon, 24-year-old Meenal Bavdankar, who styled for for several serials and dressed numerous stars, met with a tragic end on July 27 — the day the monsoon unleashed its fury on Mumbai.
Her family members still do not know what exactly went wrong and the circumstances leading to her death.
Her body was recovered from Arogya Nidhi hospital in Juhu Scheme more than 24 hours after she went missing. Along with her, the car driver also passed away.
According to family members, Meenal was on her way to Santa Cruz for an appointment on July 26 afternoon. But the downpour made her cancel her plans and return homewards.
"When I spoke to her that evening she said she was returning from Juhu Scheme as the appointment had been cancelled," says her sister-in-law Poonam.
A budding actress, she also used to take classes at Kishore Namit Kapoor's acting classes at MHADA, Four Bungalows. "She last spoke to a friend to find out whether her classes were taking place that day," say family members.
After that the family had no contact with her since the mobile network had been disrupted due to the rains. "We began calling up and going to her friends' houses in the vicinity but no one knew where she was. We couldn't get through to her cell either. We assumed she must have gotten stuck in traffic."
On July 27 night her friend actress Rukhsar got through her cell number. The man who picked up the phone told them that he had seen her being taken in an unconscious state to Cooper hospital. However, they could not find her at Cooper. The family then checked Arogya Nidhi, where they found her body.
The family assumes that due to the rains she must have got trapped in her car after the lock system failed and suffocated her to death. Her last rites were performed on July 28. Meenal is survived by her father Prakash, mother Pratibha, two brothers Amol and Guarav and sister-in-law Poonam.
