CHAPTER 4. SOME SWEET MOMENTS
It was dinner time and Maan was seated on the dining table with his Daadima. At the head of the table sat Daarji with his son and grandson on his either side. Beside Brij Maan sat and Daadima sat right opposite Daarji. There were two other seats empty right opposite Maan where he knew Geet and Rano will sit once they brought all the food from the kitchen. And right on cue, Rano and Geet arrived holding large serving bowls filled with food.
Daarji excitedly opened one of the bowls only to frown, "Yeh kya hai?" He pulled the spoon out and with it came pasta. Maan's eyes lit up. Pasta, his favorite! He looked at his Daadima with excitement. His Daadima looked surprised too. Just then Rano arrived holding another bowl with Geet following her with another bowl.
"Arre Pappaji! Woh aapke liye nahi hai! Aapke liye toh hum jo roz khaate hain woh khaana hai! Tussi woh khaao!", Rano announced as she opened the bowl she was holding and Daarji smiled as hot parathas came out of them.
Then Daarji frowned as he looked at the other bowl, "Lekin yeh kya cheez hai?"
Brij replied, "Pappaji! Yeh pasta hai! College ki dino mein maine bahut khaaya hai! Ek dum badhiya cheez hai! Aaj toh mera desi khaana bhool jaao! Mennu toh pasta khaana hai!"
"Pasta?", Daarji made a face, "Yeh kya balaa hai?"
"Pasta ek Italian dish hai Daarji!", Geet arrived bringing sarso ka saag with her. Daarji salivated at the thought of eating them. Geet continued speaking, "Maine bhi Amritsar mein College ke doston ke saath bahut khaaya hai! Ek dum badhiya hai!"
"Ital... Ital... ki?", Daarji was confused. His son chuckled from beside him, "O ji! Pappaji! Kahaa yeh pasta vasta ke chakkar mein padh rahe ho! Humaare liye toh yeh desi khaana hi theek hai!"
"Arre! Desi khaana humaare liye theek hai toh yeh videsi khaana banaaya kyun?", Daarji enquired.
Geet, Rano, Brij and Mohinder answered simultaneously, "Maan ji ke liye!"
Maan, who was waiting for the dinner to be served and enjoying the family banter, blinked in surprise. He looked at Daadima who looked surprised too. Rano smiled, "Arre aise kya vekh rahe ho! Tussi khaao! Jaa Geet puttar, apne Daadi-Saas aur hone waale pati ko khaana paros! Aage tujhe hi yeh sab karna hai!" Geet nodded eagerly and served Pasta to Maan. Maan raised an eyebrow and looked at the dish. It was Penne Pasta with Tomato Sauce. Curious about the dish, he tasted it. His eyes lit up again in delight. It was delicious!
"Auntyji! Yeh toh ek dum badhiya hai! Aapne kya pasta banaaya! Delicious!", Maan spoke excitedly. As he continued to eat more, Daadima spoke up, "Waise humein videsi khaana itna pasand nahi hai! Lekin kabhi kabaar kha lete hain! Aur maanna padega Rano beta, tussi toh videsi khaana bhi bahut achcha bana lete ho! Tumhaare haath ki desi khaana toh humne bahut khaaye lekin yeh videsi khaana toh kuch aur hi hai!"
As the grandmother, grandson continued to eat with enjoyment; Rano spoke up, "Oh ji! Aap na galat insaan ki taarif kar rahe ho! Yeh Pasta maine nahi banaaya! Mujhe kahaan aati hai videsi khaana! Main toh desi ke saath hi theek hoon!"
Daadima frowned as she looked at Rano, "Toh phir kisne banaaya?" Even Maan was curious as to who cooked the pasta so deliciously. It was perfect!
"Aap usko pooch jo aapke paas khadi hai!", Rano replied teasingly and both turned towards Geet who was still standing in between Maan and Daadima with her bowl of pasta.
"Beta ji! Tumne banaaya yeh?", Daadima asked in wonder. Geet grinned.
"Par kaise? Tumne toh kahaa tha ki tumhein sirf Punjabi khaana banaana aata hai!", Daadima exclaimed and Geet shrugged, "Arre Daadima! Aaj kal kya kuch nahi possible hai! Internet on karo, pasta google karo aur duniya bhar ke recipes aap ke ungliyon ke neeche! Aur toh aur pehle ki tarah computer ki bhi jaroorat nahi! Aaj kal toh har mobile pe internet hain! Shaam ko recipe google ki, sabse aasaan recipe uthaaya, Brij Veerji ko pasta laane bheja aur phir banaa diya!"
"Par pasta kyun?", Maan asked.
Geet grinned at him, "Daadima ne bataaya ki Italian khaana aapka favorite hai! Mujhe toh do hi Italian dishes pata hai, Pasta aur pizza! Toh maine pasta choose kiya aur bana diya!"
Geet gave Maan a bright smile and flounced away to serve the rest of the family. As she sat down to eat herself, Maan stared at her. Every time he met her she managed to impress him! Tum ho kya Geet? Har baar milti ho, apna ek naya roop dikhaati ho! Rest of the meal, Maan spent more time staring at Geet, less time eating the food in front of him. If anyone of her family noticed it, they said nothing. Daadima noticed it but with a smirk on her face she continued to eat. Geet noticed it too but then she also did the same thing as Maan, stare more and eat less.
Once the dinner was done, all of them retired to the hall except Geet. She started yawning and Rano sent her off to sleep. Maan slipped away from the hall right away unnoticed. Geet walked to her room but just before she could enter it, she felt her duppatta being tugged from behind. Frowning she turned but her lips spread into smile, when she realised that it was Maan holding her duppatta. She grabbed hold of the part near her neck. Maan tugged it once more with a smirk on his face and she took a few steps ahead. He dropped it the moment she was standing at a touching distance.
"Aap? Yahaan? Kuch chaahiye tha?", Geet asked softly as she eagerly waited for him to speak.
Maan smiled at her, "Aaj pasta bahut achcha bana tha!"
"Bas? Yahi bolna tha?", Geet frowned in mock disappointment, "Yeh toh aap baahar bhi bol sakte the? Peeche aane ki kya zaroorat?"
With a smile on her face, she turned around to walk away when he spoke again, "Itna hi bolna hota toh main bhi peeche peeche yahaan tak nahi aata!"
Geet turned around and looked at him with wonder. Maan took a step ahead, "Pasta itna achcha tha ki mann toh kara tha ki banaane waale ke haath choom loon!"
Geet's eyes widened and she gave a mischievous smile, "Toh choom lete? Chooma kyun nahi?"
Maan shrugged, "Darji the wahaan!"
Geet continued to smile playfully, "Achcha! Toh aap Darji se dar gaye the?"
"Nahi! Iss baat se dar gaya tha ki agar maine tumhaare haath choome toh kahin Daarji naaraaz hoke shaadi tak tumse milne ko mana kar dein!"
"Aur aapko yeh achcha nahi lagta?", Geet asked still being playful.
Maan shook his head, "Kyun? Tumhein achcha lagta?"
Geet bit her lip and then shook her head.
Maan's smile turned tender and he grabbed her hand and lifted to his lips. Geet took in a sharp breath as Maan's lips touched her hand. Just as he dropped her hand, she noticed something. He had grabbed her right hand.
Geet giggled and Maan frowned. Geet adopted a straight face and murmured, "Waise main lefty hoon!"
Maan raised his eyebrows. Then he grabbed her other hand and placed a kiss on it too. Geet's smile was as wide as it was when he first met her. But he noticed her cheek turning a little red and he realised that she was blushing. He could not resist staring at her red cheeks and before he knew it, he stepped ahead and placed a kiss on one of her cheeks. Geet's jaw dropped open at Maan's action and red crept up from her neck to her cheeks. Maan pulled away and chuckled at her reaction. For once he was the one surprising her.
"Good night!", Maan whispered as he turned and walked away. He knew that if he stayed another moment he would not be able to stop himself from kissing her on her lips and that he did not think either of them was ready for that.
Geet stood there in shock for a second, before it clicked to her, what had happened. Her lips split into wide grin and turning around she ran into her room. Once near her bed, she climbed onto the bed and started jumping on it, "He kissed Me! He kissed Me!" But then she sat on the bed and pouted, "But gaal pe tha!" Then she flung herself on the bed and lied on her stomach, "But HE KISSED ME!" She giggled in excitement and then feeling sleepy, she closed her eyes just as the clock in the house chimed 9 times.
"Lekin panditji yeh toh jyaada hi kuch paas hogaya, haina Pappaji?", Rano hesitantly looked at Daarji. It was next morning and Daarji informed everyone that he had called for Panditji to finalize the rishta and he would arrive soon. And that is how the whole family of Handas and Khuranas found themselves seated around the panditji at 10 in the morning. Maan was standing behind his Daadima leaning on a pillar eyeing Geet constantly with only one ear focused on the conversation surrounding him. Geet was the same way, staring at Maan as she sat beside her parents, her hands playing with her duppatta end leisurely.
Daadima and Daarji had handed over the kundalis to panditji and at first he had rejoiced that the couple were perfect for each other. But when they started to look for roka and wedding dates, the panditji said something that sent everyone into tizzy.
"Haan puttar! Tu theek keh rahi hai! Aaj shaam ko roka? Aur che din mein shaadi? Eh toh jyaada hi paas hogaya!", Daarji spoke up, "Itni jaldi sab tayyaari kaise hogi?"
The Pandit smiled, "Dekhiye! Kundali jo dikha rahi hai, wahi bata raha hoon! Iske baad muhurat do saal baad ka hai! Aur utni dur bhi shaadi theek nahi haina ji? Main theek keh raha hoon ki nahi?"
"Panditji! Aap sahi keh rahe ho! Lekin itni jaldi sab kuch...", Geet's father was beyond worried.
"Dekhiye! Baat mahurat ki hi nahi hai! Baat aapki beti ki bhi hai! Aapki beti ke zindagi mein khatra hai!", Panditji spoke.
"Khatra? Kaisa khatra?", Daadima was worried for her bahu.
"Hey Babaji! Kahin shaadi ke baad yeh khatra humaare Maan puttar ke sar nahi aayega na?", Rano wondered with fear, her thoughts jumping into conclusion, "Naiji! Aisi baat hai toh yeh shaadi nahi ho sakti! Geet ke liye Maan puttar ki zindagi khatre mein daalna theek nahi hai ji!"
Maan straightened with alarm while Geet bit her lip. Both looked at each other with wide eyes. No! The wedding cannot be cancelled.
The pandit smiled, "Nahi Ranoji! Aap galat samajh rahi hai! Maan bete ko toh koi haani nahi pahunchegi! Lekin kundliyaan bata rahi hai ki Geet ki agar shaadi Maan se jald se jald nahi hui toh Geet ko khatra jaroor hai! Agar do saal baad shaadi hui toh bala tabhi bhi tal sakti hai, lekin bala talne ki poori ummeed nahi hai! Meri maaniye toh shaadi abhi ke abhi kar deejiye!"
Daarji and Rano looked at each other uncomfortably. How to get the wedding done so soon? How can they get the preparations done so hastily? If the wedding was between two members of same village, then they could have managed to get the wedding done in few days with the help of neighbors. But how to get it done when Khurana families reside in Dilli and Handas in Hoshiarpur?
Daadima quietly spoke, "Humein lagta hai ki shaadi che din karwa deni chaahiye!"
Daarji was surprised, "Lekin behenji, aapke rishtedaar, humaare rishtedaar, in sabka kya? Che din yeh sab aa paayenge? Aur itni jaldi roka? Woh kaise karenge? Angoothiyaan bhi toh chaahiye! Saat ghante mein sahi size ki angoothi kahaan se laayenge?"
Daadima smiled, "Aap bhool rahein hain Bhaisaab ki angoothi badalna toh hum baad mein bhi kar sakte hain! Lekin roka toh aaj karsakte hain! Humaare yahaan toh angoothi badalne ka rivaaz toh aaj aaya hai! Pehle ke zamaane mein toh hum sirf roka karte the aur phir shaadi!"
"Yeh baat bhi theek hai! Phir roka aaj karte hain! Angoothiyaan shaadi ke din badal lenge!", Daarji announced, "Lekin behenji rishtedaaron ka kya?"
Daadima smiled, "Dilli ke baraatiyon ko hum shaadi ke agle din, wahin reception de denge! Aur phir kuch dinon baad dono ko yahaan bhej denge! Yahaan aap rishtedaaron ko bulaakar party de dena!"
"Lekin shaadi ki tayyaari itne jaldi? Kitne kaam hai! Kaise karenge?", Rano was still worried.
"Ma! Tussi fikar not! Main saare pind ke mundon ko bula leta hoon! Woh sab tayyaari kar denge!", Brij spoke up, "Waise bhi har ghar mein sab Geet ki taarif karte hain, iski shaadi ki khabar sunenge toh sab madat karne aa jaayenge! Aapko toh khaana bhi pakaana nahi padega!"
"Aur Ranoji, choti si shaadi karenge! Baad mein party badi de denge!", Geet's father spoke up.
And it was settled. Maan and Geet were getting married in a week and roka would be done in the evening. As soon as Panditji left, every elder scrambled off to get the things ready. Brij agreed to take Daadima with him later to buy her all the things needed to be given to would-be bride from the groom's family in the roka. Rano went to get the jewelries ready while Daarji and Mohinder went to invite as many people as possible. Both speculated that getting the marriage done quietly might create bad rumors about Geet. So they decided to inform and invite everyone from today itself for both the events.
This left Maan and Geet standing in the main hall alone. Now what to do? Both smiled at each other and walked towards each other. They were about to start talking. Suddenly, Geet was called by Rano to select a good salwar kameez for roka and Daadima called Maan to discuss his attire. Maan huffed in annoyance while Geet giggled at his expression. Maan stormed away to talk to Daadima while Geet ran away to meet her mother.
It was nearing late noon when Geet walked towards her room to get ready for the roka. Suddenly, she was grabbed by her hand and dragged into the shadows near her room. She was shocked for a second but her shock gave way to happiness when she saw it was Maan.
"Hello Mr. Khurana!", Geet spoke in a flirting manner as Maan pulled her into his arms.
"Hello Miss. Handa!", Maan's voice had a teasing tone to it.
"Aapko sharam nahi aati?", Geet asked mischievously, "Kisi ladki ko iss tarah pakadte hue? After all, kuch dino mein aapki shaadi hai?"
Maan raised an eyebrow and then replied with a smirk, "Tumhein sharam nahi aati? Kyunki shaadi toh tumhaari bhi hai! Lekin tum ho ki mujhe apne aapse dur bhi nahi karti?"
"Nahi aati?", Geet retorted, "Hoon main besharam!"
Maan tugged her close, "Aur tumhaari isi besharmi pe hum fida hain!"
"Tum dono ki besharmi khatam hogayi ho toh Geet, chalein?", both cringed as Brij continued to speak, "Woh kya hai na ki Ma bula rahi thi, roke ke liye tayyaar jo hona hai!"
Maan and Geet turned to look at Brij sheepishly who was looking at him with amusement, "Aur Jijaji? Shaadi che din mein hai! Itni der bhi nahi ruk sakte! Shaadi ke baad aapko kaun rokega? Lekin yahaan na yeh sab mat keejiye! Woh kya haina, Daarji ko heart attack nai dena hai! Bechaare abhi bhi yahi samajhte hain ki unki Geet badi bholi bhaali hai!" Then he looked at Geet with sternness, "Ab chal! Shaam ko baaki baatein kar lena!"
Geet nodded and Brij dragged her away. She looked back at Maan and pouted. Maan huffed in defeat and walked off. He had a roka to attend too.
So what do you think of the update? Hope you enjoyed it!

Kal Subaah Tujhse Main Dur Chala Jaaunga... Did you guess the song?
