If receiving awards is a barometer, then yes he is underrated.
Otherwise, he is rated where he should be. He happens to be excellent in his genre. But when he has ventured into new genres, it hasn't worked.. similar has been the case for Ranbir Kapoor.. Both of these actors did multiple similar-toned movies (RK- guy who wants to find himself, EH- who is an underdog in underworld) and suddenly when they tried to change track, it's taking a long time for audience to accept them in new roles
