Deepika is a mediocre actress and has limited range, that is why she could not pull of a weak character.

If some other actress with stronger acting chops would have been able to pull a weak written character Mastani well.

About Kangana maybe do not know.

Kangana is amazing actress but she is not that beautiful, graceful and he be voice quality... Sorry!!

Kangana doesn't have a classical charm for a period film. She looks too modern.
