The release of Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan's "Dilwale" and Ranveer Singhand Deepika Padukone starrer "Bajirao Mastani" on Friday met with protests across various cities in the country for different reasons. However, largely, both the movies drew crowds pan-India.
A Pune multiplex cancelled five scheduled shows of "Bajirao Mastani" following a vociferous protest by at least 200 workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who raised slogans against the Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial. They said the movie, about Maratha warrior Peshwa Bajirao I (Ranveer) and his two wives - Mastani (Deepika) and Kashibai (Priyanka Chopra), has "distorted the historical facts of the Peshwa era".
"The filmmakers have completely distorted the historical facts of the Peshwa era of the early 1700s and has actually portrayed him in an insulting manner. The people of Maharashtra virtually worship the Peshwas so we cannot tolerate what is being depicted in this film," BJP's Pune city vice president Jayant Bhave told IANS.
Bhave said that Peshwa Bajirao I is a highly revered historical figure who helped spread Chhatrapati Shivaji's empire to other parts of India and remained so busy with his responsibilities that he used to eat his food on horseback during battles.
"He never had the time to fiddle with his hair locks (choti) and dance in public as shown in the film... Similarly, the depiction of his wife Kashibai portrayed by actressPriyanka Chopra is also in poor taste as royalty never behaved in such fashion those days," Bhave added.
Earlier in Mumbai, a few descendents of the Peshwas had also raised objections to certain things portrayed in the film as distorting historical facts.
Meanwhile, angered by Shah Rukh's statement on "religious intolerance" in the country, Bajrang Dal activists shouted slogans and opposed the screening of his "Dilwale" in Araria and Patna districts of Bihar. Protests also took place in Ghaziabad, Varanasi, Jabalpur and even in Delhi.
At a theatre in Patna, the activists burnt an effigy of the "Chennai Express" star and threatened to take their protest to different places in the coming days.
The protests notwithstanding, both "Bajirao Mastani" and "Dilwale" have received the audience's love on their opening day. Most critics have given a thumbs up to the grandeur of "Bajirao Mastani", while "Dilwale" has won people's heart with its truly commercial elements.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh called "Bajirao Mastani" "a cinematic gem that you cannot miss", while film critic Amod Mehra compared the film to Indian epic "Mughal E Azam".
Mehra tweeted: "It took Indian cinema 55 years to produce another magnum opus of the calibre of 'Mughal-E-Azam'. #BajiraoMastani is mesmerising. Take a bow Sanjay Leela Bhansali."
Trade expert Komal Nahta tweeted that the opening day response of "Dilwale" has been more than "Bajirao Mastani".
"Opening of #Dilwale ranges from good to very good to excellent. Opening of #BajiraoMastani is ordinary to fair, but good at places," Nahta posted.
The films, which have resulted in a division of screens for each other by releasing on the same day, are still likely to get a good opening weekend. Especially with no big releases lined up for the next few weeks, both the films will have equal opportunities to earn.

Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Varun Dhawan, Kriti Sanon, Varun Sharma, Sanjay Mishra, Johnny Lever, Vinod Khanna and Kabir Bedi
Direction: Rohit Shetty
Rating: ***
This one is a complete entertainer.
Dilwale' does everything a Bollwood masala film should do - there's love, there's action, there's drama, there's song and dance - basically it's value for money.
Rohit Shetty has mastered his craft. It's commendable how seamlessly he blends the various elements.
The over-the-top action sequences, the mushy romance and dollops of melodrama play out like a well synchronised orchestra. He hits just the right chords, there isn't a single jarring note.
Our director has upped him game, it's no longer just mindless humour and cars being blown to pieces.
Shetty has made sure that this film hooks you from the very beginning. Kaali (Shah Rukh Khan) and Meera's (Kajol) intriguing love story and why these two are thrown apart forms the basis of this potboiler. The flashbacks work well as they give you a little insight into what could have transpired between these star crossed lovers but never really give you their real story.
The second half of the narrative is peppered with generous doses of humour and it helps that Shetty lets Varun Dhawan completely own that. Varun's comic timing is perfect and he is effortless in the little brother role. Rohit Shetty has shown rare restrain in this film, he doesn't go overboard. The action sequence shot in Bulgaria is brilliantly executed and it stays with you because you don't have too many of those.
Even the songs - they come at regular intervals but never slow down the pace of the plot. 'Gerua' looks spectacular on the big screen, the locations, the clothes (despite the velvet jackets that Shah Rukh wears), the lead couple, they spell magic together. Even 'Manma' and 'Janam Janam' are well executed numbers.
I guess, it's possible only in Bollywood, that our lead couple look better as they age. Shah Rukh and Kajol look disarming adorable together. Despite the years and the number of times they've worked together there's a new intensity you see this time.
There's a part in the 'Janam Janam' song where Kajol wears a blue dress and it's reminiscent of the green halter-neck dress she wore in the 'Ruk Ja' song ( in 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge') and I couldn't help but notice how amazingly chic and suave they looked now compared to then.
Sure there are some excesses, especially the King (Boman Iranian) sub-plot seemed completely unnecessary. In the acting department, Jhonny Lever is a huge letdown, saddled with some silly antics. The rest of the cast however, provide robust support. I thought giving Kajol's character a manipulative bent was quite a nice touch. The director ensures that the twists and turns never let the pace slacken.
It's the holiday season and what better way to usher it in than with a Shah Rukh Khan release. 'Dilwale' is complete paisa vasool. If you have to make a Bollywood formula film, make it like Rohit Shetty.
