Okay first things first. The story is lame, twists are cliched and some of the jokes are downright ridiculous. I can write a whole paragraph on the negatives and the lameness of the script yet write a page on why I found it entertaining despite everything 😆 To start off, Varun is awesome. I still have issues with his dialogue delivery and he needs to work on it but he is mad fun on screen. He makes lame jokes work and dances like a dream. And surprisingly Kriti was quite charming and looked gorgeous in the film. Now about SRK-Kajol. Damn where do I start 😆 Their fb track is downright cheesy. Cliched love story with a cliched twist. But boy do they make it work or what. I knew I wil like their present day scenes a lot more and I actually did. Some of their scenes in the second half are magic. And tht bit right before the climax where they bicker while dancing-my god, what chemistry. Wow. I swear they create magic like no one else can 😆 Oh and Janam janam looks stunning on the big screen. The film has a lot of issues. Flimsy misunderstandings, random fights etc. but it still works. Atleast it did for me 😆 Like someone said, they look into each other's eyes and everything else is forgotten. They still got it dude. Aunty uncle still create incredible chemistry and I still can't stop fangirling 😆

P.S. The last scene is all kinds of adorable. I don wanna spoil it for others so I won't reveal much but boy that dialogue still works and makes my heart flutter. And they are still my most favourite on screen couple 😆

Finally you're here...I was waiting for your review 😆 I'm glad you enjoyed it :D

Review - Dilwale - A Package Affair

Dec 18, 2015

One thing for which Dilwale needs to get credit is consistency. Right from the time when its promotion kick-started, it was pretty much being promoted as a package affair that would have the mix of everything. Love, action, music, emotions, dance, drama, comedy - the works. Whether it was the first promo, the second promo or the songs that were unveiled intermittently, Shahrukh Khan and Co. had made it crystal clear that since the film is aiming for a family audience, there would be a mix of just about everything.

That said, a mix like this is always a tricky preposition. This is what happens for Dilwale too. At places, you are truly entertained, at places you find the proceedings a little predictable. At certain points you want the drama to move at a faster pace. At certain points the comic scenes really keep you in splits.

(Spoilers ahead) So while the film has been designed as a roller coaster ride by Rohit Shetty, the film does have its ups and downs at regular intervals as well. So if the start is fine with Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon love story, the flashback love story between Shahrukh and Kajol gets a tad extended. The action sequence in Bulgaria is simply fantastic and the twist at this point is truly scintillating - you just can't see that coming. However, while this would have made for a fantastic interval point, the sequences that follow are just about decent. Also, you do miss Varun and Kriti in the narrative.

The second half starts off well too. However, the games played by Varun Dhawan, Kriti and their friend Varun Sharma seem to be all over the place. This is where Sanjay Mishra comes to the rescue. His comic timing is impeccable, his (oft heard) mimicry of late actor Jeevan is superb and the lines spoken by him - which are in sing-song style - bring the house down at many places. Mukesh Tiwari joins the party as well and it is at these places where you do get to see Rohit Shetty bringing on the Golmaal magic.

However, in the middle of this all, a couple of songs are thrown in which does impact the pace of the narrative. Also, while Boman Irani does well in a parallel track, it could have been more tightly woven into the scheme of things. As is the case though, in this roller coaster ride it is always good to have Shahrukh Khan appear on screen because whenever that happens, you are truly clued on. In fact his scenes with Varun are the best part of the film and it is good to see him stepping in a bade bhaiyaa' avtar with a certain hint of comic flair which is true to his personality. These moments are truly enjoyable.

Since Shahrukh and Rohit wanted this to be a family affair, there isn't much of dhoom dhadaaka' during the climax, as a result of which one does feel that a little more punch in the proceedings would have helped. Surprisingly, Amar Mohile - who is generally quite masala' in his background score - keeps the theme primarily romantic for most part of the film. A signature tune a la the kind that went along with Amitabh Bachchan in Hum would have elevated the scenes featuring Shahrukh Khan's past in a major way. Nonetheless, Pritam's tunes for Gerua, Manma Emotion and Tukur Tukur keep you entertained.

Though you do wish that with superb locations, technical team and above all a dream starcast, Dilwale could well have turned out to be an epic affair, you don't quite mind what eventually plays on screen. A light film, it can be given a comfortable watch, provided the expectations are kept in check.

Dilwale

DILWALE Is Complete Family Entertainer With Historic Chemistry Of Shahrukh And Kajol

Pluses:

Shahrukh Khan is outstanding, Kajol shines most throughout, Varun Dhawan brings infectious energy, Kriti Sanon looks pretty, Sanjay Mishra and Varun Sharma are good too in comic roles, amazingly shot, couple of good songs, sharp editing

Minuses:

few jokes fall flat, Johnny Lever and Boman Irani do not add much, nothing new to offer in terms of plot, dialogues are inconsistent

Critic Rating:

4/5

Business Rating:

4/5

Verdict:

Watch it for typical Bollywood style complete entertainment

Detailed Analysis:

Rohit Shetty made some big hits films like 'Chennai Express', 'Singham' and 'Golmaal' series. He makes films for masses and never cares for reviews. After Rajkumar Hirani he has most impeccable record at box office. Now he is back with most magical pair SRK - Kajol along with youth sensation Varun Dhawan, can you ask for more!

The film tells story of Kaali/Raj (Shahrukh Khan) who has younger brother Veer (Varun Dhawan). Veer is in love with Ishita (Kriti Sanon) but they are not aware of troubled past of Raj who used to be Kaali and had an affair with Meera (Kajol). He used to be a dreaded criminal Kaali and his father (Vinod Khanna) was a criminal too. Meera's father (Kabir Bedi) used to be at loggerheads with Kaali's father and this love couple's love life goes through hell due to a confusion and some twists in pasts. How Veer and Ishita (Meera's sister) bring them together forms the rest of the story.

The pace of the film is amazing throughout like most Rohit Shetty film. 1st song 'Manmaa Emotion Jaage' sets the pace and 'Gerua' before interval is outstanding on big screen. 2nd half is pacy and has some good 3 - 4 amazing sequences i.e. 'Janam Janam' song and flash back of SRK - Kajol. But yes, the chemistry of lead pair will be talked about again and it was greeted with whistles even in multiplexes.

Performance wise Shahrukh Khan carries the film on his shoulder and his dialogue delivery is bang on. But its Kajol who walks away with best act of the film as her chemistry with SRK is out of the world. Varun Dhawan manages to bring freshness and infectious energy in every frame. Kriti Sanon is charming. Sanjay Mishra and Varun Sharma have few funny scenes but Johnny Lever and Boman Irani are strictly average. Kabir Khan and Vinod Khanna are average in the film. Chetna Pande, Pankaj Tripathi and Mukesh Tiwari have not much to do in the film.

Film has average screenplay and dialogues are good but at times lack edge especially funny ones. Film has razor sharp editing by Bunty Negi. Music is good as couple of songs look really good on big screen. Cinematography is superb, production design is good and costumes are apt. Background score is below par.

Director Rohit Shetty has done good job with this one but to be honest he was gifted with presence of such sizzling lead pair and budget. Biggest issue with the film is undeutilisation of Varun Dhawan as he gets very limited scenes. Also his grip on comic scenes seems loose and even placement of songs are bit odd. But he succeeds in presenting a superb family entertainer.

Film will release today and it will get good to average reviews but it will get very good opening due to star power but will not be a blockbuster opening due to clash. Film might suffer in Mumbai/Gujarat due to clash and some other contrversies surrounding Shahrukh. Film should have 75 cr nett plus weekend in India but whether it holds in long run for over next 20 days is tough question to answer.

Go for this one for most romantic lead pair and loads of clean family entertainment !

'Dilwale' - Movie Review

By Shubha Shetty-Saha |Posted 18-Dec-2015

'Dilwale'
U/A; Action-comedy
Director: Rohit Shetty
Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Varun Dhawan, Kriti Sanon, Kabir Bedi, Vinod Khanna, Boman Irani, Johnny Lever, Sanjay Mishra, Varun Sharma
Rating:

'Dilwale' poster. Pic/Santa Banta

One thing is clear. If you expect depth or even a hint of novelty in the story, go watch some other movie. If you expect a lot of style and action crammed to the gills with masala, stay right here.

So you get the usual from a Rohit Shetty film; the 'funny' characters (Sanjay Mishra and Johnny Lever in this one) spouting unbelievably silly lines, which make you sheepishly snort with laughter once in a while, plenty of fights and the peppy songs with ever ready extras waiting to break into a dance as enthusiastically as fancy cars waiting to be blown up in air in style.

You want more? Well, you do get more. Making all the silliness around it somehow credible is the presence of Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol together with that magical chemistry.

Photos: Varun Dhawan, Kriti Sanon, other celebs watch 'Dilwale'

This is a film with a story that belongs to the '90s co-existing with cars that belong to the next century. Meera (Kajol) and Raj (SRK) are the children of two warring Mafia dons and they end up falling in love. Raj was a one-man army in a black leather jacket before he succumbs to Meera's charm and goes all soft and romantic. A twist of fate separates the two and also gets Raj to turn into a good man. 15 years later, Raj is a doting brother to Veer (Varun Dhawan) and also the owner of a garage full of, what else, Shetty's tools of fantasy - fancy cars. Veer's love for Ishita (Kriti Sanon) brings Meera and Raj face-to-face again, leading to another twist.

Kajol, as expected, is excellent in emotional parts but her chirpiness when playing the younger self borders on being annoying. Shah Rukh Khan is fabulous as the earnest lover boy and as the older and mellower man 15 years later. His eyes belie many emotions as he plays the angst-ridden lover waiting to clear the misunderstanding with the woman he loves, to perfection and to the gallery.

Varun Dhawan is endearing and sincere as ever. Kriti gives good support. But then the younger couple, or for that matter everything else, fades into the background when SRK and Kajol look into each other's eyes.

Even if you are not a Rohit Shetty fan, watch this for the chemistry between SRK and Kajol which refuses to simmer down even after all these years.
