Dilwale' box office collections vs Bajirao Mastani': Shah Rukh Khan starrer's take seen at Rs 21-22 crore' on day 1

'Dilwale' box office collections vs 'Bajirao Mastani': "'Dilwale' occupancy rate on opening day is 70% while 'Bajirao Mastani' opened at 30% - Shah Rukh Khan starrer will pull in around Rs 21-22 crore", according to distributor.

'Dilwale' box office collections vs 'Bajirao Mastani': "Both 'Dilwale' and 'Bajirao Mastani' opened to 100 per cent occupancy here. The shows are full and the audience response looks very promising as of now," says exhibitor. (Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol during a photo shoot. PTI photo)

Dilwale' box office collections vs Bajirao Mastani': As the big Bollywood clash between Dilwale', which stars Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol and Bajirao Mastani', which hasDeepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh in starring roles, released today at theatres across the country occupancy rate trends indicate that SRK's movie has grabbed an early lead at the B.O. With 70% while Deepika's Bajirao' managed 30% - the movie is being screened amid protests by right-wing outfits.

"Dilwale' has opened to an occupancy of 70% while Bajirao Mastani' opened at 30%. The opening day Dilwale' collection will be somewhere around Rs 21-22 crore. Bajirao' might settle for a Rs 10-12 crore opening day figure," Girish Wankhede, of production-distribution company Entity One, said.

Directed by Rohit Shetty, Dilwale' reunites the iconic pair of Shah Rukh Khan-Kajol after five years and is a commercial potboiler with a dose of romance, comedy and action. Bajirao Mastani', starring Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra, on the other hand is a historical romance saga directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh said the opening of "Dilwale", which also stars Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon, will be within the range of "very good to excellent."

"Dilwale' has opened better. It is too early to give a number now but it is in the range of very good to excellent. Bajirao Mastani' is slightly slow and is within the range of ordinary to good."

"Bajirao Mastani" narrates the love story of the Maratha warrior Peshwa Bajirao I and his second wife Mastani. While Ranveer and Deepika play the eponymous roles, Priyanka is seen playing Bajirao's first wife Kashibai.

Adarsh, however, feels word of mouth for the Ranveer-Deepika starrer is very positive which might help the film.

"The word of mouth for Bajirao Mastani' is very strong, it will gain momentum by the evening shows, but the masses are loving Dilwale'. Both the films will continue to do well as we have Christmas weekend followed by New Year. It is an open ground."

Manoj Desai, exhibitor and owner of G7 Cinemas here, said both the films are doing well in his properties despite their different genres.

"Both Dilwale' and Bajirao Mastani' opened to 100 per cent occupancy here. The shows are full and the audience response looks very promising as of now."

Adarsh feels the clash has hampered the screen count of both the movies, apart from dividing the audience.

"Not only the audience gets divided because of the clash but also the screen and show timings. Having said that, two good films can co-exist as has happened in the past too."

Movie Review: Dilwale, Kabhi Smile, Kabhi Frown

Surprise surprise, bade bade shehron mein bhi entertainment abhi baaki hai

Get this. Where there's a wheel, there's no way. Cars somersault like circus acrobats, crash, wham, slam, and go up in smoke. Choke, no jokes. So much for the action quotient. And when there's some shrubbery in the vicinity, there must be a su-su interlude. Lewd.

Groan and bear it? Yup, in keeping with his customary signature, director Rohit Shetty displays a compulsive disorder for chaos in Dilwale, compelling you to clutch your head in grief, weep into your caramel corn, and gape at the auditorium's ceiling, which isn't at all a salutary feeling.

But but...hang on, there's a rescue operation in sight. At the end of Shetty's tunnel vision, there's a light.

However jaded-'n'-faded a spectator may be, Bollywood's asli dilwales pull off a magic trick. Before you can mumble abracadabra, the manic malarkey diverts to miles of footage towards rekindling the ye olde Shah Rukh Khan-Kajol magic. Glad to report, suddenly you're smiling goofily in the dark. Surprise surprise, even this Shettynama becomes a lark.

Whenever the charismatic coosome twosome are on screen, the corn tastes c..c..crispy. Agreed, the thick-as-a-jungle bearded soul (Shah Rukh Khan) and his perennial subject of desire (Kajol) may no longer be spring chickens. Yet they relegate the younger pack to a godown of supportive nuts and bolts. In fact, the ever-jousting senior jodi abetted intermittently by a hysterical gang of loonybins actually transform this Rohit Shetty outing into a fairly fun-time fandango of a movie. Thank the lord, then, for tender mercies.

Undeniably, visually the overall outcome does look terribly tacky (excessive use of fairylights, falooda colour set decor) lapses into cliches galore, discloses an absence of continuity as locations shift helter-skelter between Goa, a Hyderabad studio, Iceland (yes!) and, baap re baap Bulgaria too for helicopter aerial shots aplenty. In addition, the plot premise seems to be 'inspired' by the cult laff-out-loud comedy, Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi. Note, the car workshop milieu is ditto.

Also if the middle-aged brother, Ashok Kumar, was reticent about a woman from his past, a similar love-lost braking gear is under repair here. And if faint shades are apparent from Amitabh Bachchan presiding over his Hum siblings, oho, all's fair in love and 'inspiration'. Drat that word.

Gratifyingly, when Shetty flashes back to Jungle Beard and Perennial Desire, you're as elated as discovering a forgotten Rs. 1,000 note in your winter jacket. Their first encounter on a Bulgarian boulevard, their first date (curfewed to five minutes) and the confectionery sweet courtship, ooze the perfume of nostalgia. Follows a twist in the scream-play. Bleep, to avoid a spoiler alert, suffice it to say that right away the clever sleight of the narrative makes your jaw drop.

Back then to the then and now. Our Beard has become a do-gooder, Desire runs a beachside cafe. Coincidence intended. His zoned-out brother (Varun Dhawan) and her kid sister (Kriti Sanon) meet, go greet-greet and fall in love as easily as slipping on a banana peel. Eeesh. Over then to serenades, seismic heart pangs, hurdles and much do-dah connected to drug rackets, gulabi pills in cellophane-wrapped packets and yackety-yacks.

Fortuitously, the post-intermission section sustains its minty flavour, courtesy Farhad-Sajid's screwball madcap dialogue delivered by Dilwale's official flunkeys (Mukesh Tiwari accompanied by a refugee from Gangs Of Wasseypur), with oodles of help from a zany Sanjay Mishra and the incorrigibly overwrought Johnny Lever. A scene showing a yarn being concocted in sync with vintage film flashes on television is hilarious, somewhat in a Manmohan Desai-sque vein.

Ha-ha salvos are fired against the escalating costs of an evening out at the multiplex, the ongoing obsession with brand names, not to forget a friendly jibe at Kajol for putting on weight since her slender-oh-so-tender days.

In the event, despite the rough-hewn technique, rudimentary special effects, gaudy colour tones and the derivative content, the silver linings save the day for Dilwale, enhanced by the catchy Gerua song composed by Pritam.

Needless to point out, the performances are a mixed bag. Boman Irani, as ditzy don, hams big-time. Varun Dhawan seems to be constrained by an underdeveloped role. Ergo, he seems to be content with a pass-class report card. By comparison, his sidey (Varun Sharma) seizes a chance to display his acting chops impactfully in a solo outburst vignette.

Without a shadow of a doubt, Dilwale rides on the shoulders of Shah Rukh Khan, impressive as ever while switching from the iron-tough sort to the butter-soft lover boy. And Kajol rocks. Quite piquantly, at one point she asks, "Kaisi lagi meri acting? World class, hai na?" Absolutely, yes.

To wrap, don't commit the error of expecting the world out of Dilwale. Go with your expectations low. Strong chances are that you might actually come out, wearing half-a-smile on your face.

dekho...we would have been bat shit crazy ...if we were to expect more than 1 star from hard core critics like Masand, Guha, Anupama and Raja Sen...what I wanted was a clean GO chit from KRK...and that we got...KRK knows if the movie is entertaining or not...and that is all matters in masala movie.

Bajirao Mastani v/s Dilwale: How the movies are faring at multiplexes and single screens

As the two big movies clash at box-office, we try and find out which managed to do better. We spoke to a chain of multiplex and single screen owners to find out the response given out to both the films.
  • Dilwale v.s Bajirao Mastani dna

Dilwale vs Bajirao Mastani- Who will rule box-office? has been the important question since the last few days . The hype created by both the movies had been equal and so was the curiosity to find out which of the two will manage to rule the hearts of the audiences and critics.

Till Thursday, the picture was leaning towards the side of Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol starrer Dilwale. As the movie had managed to sweep major screens of multiplexes, it seemed like Dilwale would be doing a far better job in amassing the box-office collections on its opening weekend.

Read: Dilwale or Bajirao Mastani: Who will win the box office battle?

However, a comparative study of the two movies tell a different story:

1) Multiplexes Pre-booking

It cannot be denied that Rohit Shetty's Dilwale has grabbed the maximum shows of multiplexes across Mumbai. As reported by Bollywood Hungama, online ticket bookings for the films had also suggested a lead for Dilwale in multiplexes. However, after the near end of the first day, here are the results. Screens like PVR cinema, Sion have screened 21 shows since morning for Dilwale. In comparison to that Bajirao Mastani lacks behind with just 7-8 shows. The scene at some big-window cinema screens like Neelyog Square, (INOX) Ghatkopar and Fun Cinemas,Chembur is also the same where 17-20 screenings ofDilwale were witnessed in comparison to a 10-12 screenings for Bajirao Mastani.

2) Audience number in the screens

Though there have been pre-bookings in the more number of shows that have been allotted to Dilwale, number of viewers seems to have gone down. According to the figures stated by theatres like PVR Sion and Odean Cinemax Ghatkopar, almost 70-80 % of the screens are getting filled. Morning shows have received a better feedback as compared to the later part of the day

3) Houseful or not?

If figures are to be compared, lesser shows are going house full than what is expected. As told to us by PVR Sion and Eros Churchgate, the first two-three shows had received a houseful screening. However, according to Sumith Bhosale, supervisor at PVR Sion, " Numbers have gone down for Dilwale after the morning show. People are instead preferring to watch Bajirao Mastani over the former."

4) Equal response at single screens

Single screens which are seen showing either Dilwale or Bajirao Mastani have also received a good response in numbers since morning. Screens of Gaiety which is screening Bajirao Mastani and Galaxy that is showing Dilwale, Sahakar Plaza Chembur and Plaza cinema of Dadar are seeing a mixed response from both the movies.

However, Galaxy which has more number of seating (972) as compared to Gaiety (850) had screened Dilwale in anticipation of getting a bigger number.

5) Competition is clear?

Competition still remains unclear as the first day has seen more fans than the actual movie lovers. However, Plaza cinema in Dadar which had screened five shows for Dilwale since morning has agreed to put two morning shows for Bajirao Mastani on the coming days.

"Dilwale,on the first day saw a 60 % seating in the screens. We have agreed to switch two morning shows for Bajirao Mastani as compared to Dilwale owing to the response received across," supervisor Sonar said. Metro Cinemas at Marine Lines have announced that both movies have got an 'O.K' verdict. Be it more screens or better response, the clearer picture will be out only on Monday as the opening weekend is over. Till then try to catch both the movies to enjoy the fun.
