CHAPTER 15. MAAN GETS JEALOUS PART I!
"Kya? Sachchi? Oh! I did not know!", Geet mumbled with excitement of her face. It was the day after the party and Geet was talking on the phone. "No! No! I am free! Just having breakfast, you know! Did you have your breakfast yet?", Geet continued. She was seated on the breakfast table listening to Maan scold her when her phone rang. Any other day Geet would have excused herself but right now she was so annoyed at Maan that her manners went right out of the window and she sat right there and took her phone.
"Achcha! Parathe? Gobi ke?", anyone around Geet could see that she was salivating at the thought of those parathas. And then the person calling her asked her something and she visibly deflated, "Kahaan yaar? I am stuck eating salads!", she tossed an annoyed look at Maan and continued speaking, "My teacher is a health freak!" Geet continued to speak on the phone.
Watching all this was a fuming Maan and amused Annie and Dev. Maan watched with narrowed eyes. As he was seated closest to her, he could actually hear the voice of the person calling her and without knowing his hands clenched the fork and spoon tightly as a male voice came out of Geet's phone. He was just scolding Geet at what all wrong things she did the night before which was one page long in his eyes when she cut him off to answer some phone! Maan was beyond annoyed right now. How dare she chose to pick up the phone when he was scolding her? Maan could not fathom what was more important than him right now to Geet. And then he heard, a male voice! Maan did not know why but his anger rose at this and right now the fork and spoon were in danger of being permanently disfigured.
Thankfully for Maan's fork and spoon the danger lessened as Geet replied with "I will think and answer!" and kept the phone. If fork and spoon could speak, you would have heard them sigh in relief.
Annie and Dev passed amused looks to each other as they noticed Geet's oblivious attitude and Maan's blatant anger filled staring. Both had only one thought. Daadima would have enjoyed this! Unfortunately for Daadima, she left early morning as she liked the comfort of her farm house more than the city house.
Geet smiled as she disconnected the call. Viren was so sweet. She smilingly looked up and then her smile disappeared when she took in Maan's anger filled eyes. She gulped. Oh teri! It seems his rants have yet to end! Rant away Mr. Khurana! I think you are bursting with words to scold me! Suddenly, Geet had the image in her mind of Maan bloating up and then bursting. She giggled and that was the trigger for Maan Singh Khurana!
"ENOUGH!", Maan roared as he slammed the hands on the table.
Geet looked at Annie and Dev helplessly. Her eyes seemed to ask when Maan's anger will abet. Both shook their heads. Geet wondered whether they were trying to signal never or they just did not know.
"Yeh ho kya raha hai yahaan pe? What is happening here?", Maan shouted, "I am here teaching you valuable things and you would rather waste the time laughing like a donkey on the phone!"
Both Annie and Dev winced. Dev shook his head. Bro! Don't you know? You should never compare a woman to an animal! No wonder you are so clueless when it came to matters of heart!
"Kya kahaa?", Geet stood up annoyed, "Did you just call me a donkey?" She glared at him.
"What? Of course not! Don't be ridiculous!", Maan snapped, "Here I am talking to you about something important and you are thinking about donkeys! Who was that man on the phone? You were giggling and cracking jokes, acting so idiotic. He must have thought of you as a fool! Is this how I taught you to behave in upper society? You are ruining your reputation in front of this man! Who was it?"
Aha! Dev smirked. It was a man! No wonder you are acting like this! You are jealous bro! Awesome!
Geet was bursting to shout at Maan, Dev could see. But suddenly, instead of shouting back, she simply closed her eyes and after taking a deep breath, she spoke in a cool and calm voice, "Why do you care?"
Maan seemed to be taken back by her reaction, Geet realised. Very good! It is about time the tables are turned and you are the one being confused! I am tired of your tirade and your emotions doing swinging between being proud of me and being angry at me. And I am also tired of being your proverbial punching bag, the person you always scold even when it is not my fault.
Geet huffed out her breath and stared at Maan, "Answer me Sir! Why do you care? Yes! You should worry about how I behave in the party! But here? Here I can behave the way I want; you have no right to stop me! So why do you care?"
And then her eyes burned with anger as Geet continued, "And as far as the person I am talking to is concerned, it is none of your business who I talk to!"
With a final glare, Geet turned and stormed off.
Maan stood there stupefied as to what had happened. The cold manner with which Geet had dealt with him left him feeling empty. It was cold, calculative and definitely not the way Geet normally behaved. The warm and sunny manner that Maan associated with Geet was nowhere to be seen and Maan felt empty without it.
"Yeh kya tha Bhai? What was that?", Annie asked Maan. Dev noticed that she was annoyed at Maan. He chuckled. Annie continued, "I did not expect this from you. Why do you even care about whom she talks to and how she talks to! I don't understand you! You act like idiot sometimes! Uff!", Annie shook her head, "Why do you always scold Geet? Poor thing! All she wanted was her dream job and to get her that you treat her so horribly. I am so annoyed at you!"
Annie turned around and stormed away. Dev followed her.
"You know I think something else is going on!", Dev spoke as both walked to their rooms.
"Matlab? What do you mean?", Annie looked confused.
"What if Bro was jealous?", Dev whispered with excitement.
"Jealous?", Annie made a face, "Jealous for what? And jealous of whom?"
"I don't know what he was jealous of! But the way he asked who she was talking to was so possessive and reeked of jealousy!"
Annie stopped walking and with hands on her hips she turned to look at Dev, "Possessive? Reeked of jealousy? What have you been reading recently? Mills & Boons?"
Annie chuckled and started to walk away but Dev grabbed her arm effectively stopping her, "Laugh at me as much as you want, but you cannot deny that Bro has been behaving out of character since Geet arrived!"
"Ha ha ha!", Annie laughed haughtily, "He always behaves out of character when anything disturbs his daily boring life!"
"I am not as assured as you are! I think something else is cooking here! I think Bro is falling for Geet and is in denial! And I am definitely sure that he is blaming Geet for his heart's predicament!", Dev explained.
They reached Annie's room and just as Annie was about to enter, she turned around and retorted, "Heart and denial? My foot! He is just disappointed that Geet's antics yesterday set back his plans and there is just good chance that he might loose the bet! And that is why he is so annoyed!"
Annie turned around, entered her room and closed the door. Dev huffed. Why doesn't she believe me? Now with whom can I discuss this topic and see if my idea has any merit? Hmmm... Of course, Daadima!
While Dev planned to discuss the current situation with his Daadima, Geet on the other hand paced in her room as she fumed over the current situation, "What does he think of himself? So arrogant and annoying! I understand him scolding me about yesterday. Even though I defended his Daadima, he is not happy with the way I went about it so he scolding me is also forgiven. But now he had no right to scold me. I can speak the way want to on my phone! Who is he to scold me? And then he went on to ask me whom I was talking to? Has he no value of my privacy? How could he? He has no right to complain about my informal talking. He should be thankful that I did not speak in Hindi and remembered to talk in English! Uff! Till now I tolerated you Maan for my dreams! But now you are being intolerable!"
As Geet paced around, she remembered the phone call. It was Viren! Just remembering him, Geet felt a smile bloom on her face. Now here is a man who knows how to treat me! Geet sighed softly. She remembered how Viren had asked her if she could show him Dilli this evening. At that time her first thought had been about how much training she needed to finish so she had politely told him that she will think and reply even though she had made her mind to say no. But now? She huffed. The way Maan is behaving, I don't think I will have any confidence left by the time I get tested. Maan keeps on constantly belittling me and irritating me. No! I have to get out of this house and throw Maan and his cutting words out of my head. And spending time with Viren is the best option for it. She took a deep breath and nodded. Yes! She will go with Viren and show him Dilli today. She pulled out her phone and placed a call to Viren.
"Kya kahaa?", Dev was amused as he heard his Daadima speak on the phone, "Phir se bolo Dev beta! Kya kahaa?"
"Haan Daadima! I am not joking. Bro was raging like a volcano! It was too funny to watch!", Dev chuckled.
"Hmmm... interesting! But what was the reason behind his reaction? Don't tell me he is still ranting about yesterday night!", Daadima mused.
"Oh no Daadima! That's an old story! This is something new! Someone called Geet and she talked very cheerfully and next thing you know Bro is bursting like a bomb! I tell you, Daadima he was jealous!", Dev chuckled again.
"I don't know beta! Maybe he is just reacting over the fact that she is not taking his words seriously!", Daadima replied cautiously.
Dev shook his head, "Nahi Daadima! I am sure there is something cooking between bro and Geet. If Bro played his cards right, I might get a Parjaayi pretty soon!"
"Forget Parjaayi! You tell me when you are giving me a bahu!", Daadima retorted.
Dev rolled his eyes, "Aren't you satisfied by getting one bahu?"
"Don't change the topic!", Daadima scolded and Dev pouted, "Lets Maan Bro's love story come on track, then I will think about my love story! But first you focus on this and tell me, do you see what I see? Do you see the chemistry between Bro and Geet?"
Daadima huffed, "By the way, I did see the sparks between them at the party! I could sense the chemistry!"
"Aha! So I am right. So there is something going on between them! Awesome!", Dev crowed.
"But I warn you, don't meddle in their affairs! Let them make their own decisions!", Daadima ordered Dev.
"What? But if I left them to their own devices, Bro will ruin everything!", Dev whined.
"I don't care! You are not interfering!", Daadima's voice raised.
Dev sighed, "Fine!"
"No Geet! Its fasaad! Its pronounced as fasaad!", Maan explained.
Geet frowned, "They write it as faade and call it fasaad! English is so weird!"
Maan glared at her, "Why don't you focus on what I am teaching you? You can worry about why faade is called fasaad later!"
Geet huffed and continued to read the paper in front of her aloud. It was training time for Geet and Maan was working with her on her diction.
"Charle. Magne..., Geet read and Maan interrupted, "Shar-le-maan!"
"Kya?", Geet looked at him confused.
"Its written as C.H.A.R.L.E.M.A.G.N.E but read as sharlemaan!", Maan explained.
Geet wanted to protest but gave up. She continued to read ahead and Maan continued to correct her. Once she had gone through the words in front of her Maan had her reading passages. After reading the same paragraphs for almost ten times, Geet had enough, "Sir! How many times will you make me read the same para?"
"Till I am sure you can read it properly even half asleep!", Maan growled out, "It is obvious that you need to get used to speaking in English! It seems you can easily revert to Hindi without any given warning and we don't want to have another fiasco like yesterday night on our hands again!"
Annie opened her mouth to scold Maan but stopped when Dev shook his head. Dev and Annie were sitting nearby as usual observing the training and as usual Dev had his camcorder recording the whole training too. Annie leaned over and whispered, "Why did you stop me? Bhai keeps on scolding her, not once relenting. We need to tell him that what he is doing is wrong!"
Dev huffed and whispered back, "I know! But you are forgetting that Geet can defend herself and as we saw in the morning she can shut Bro up more effectively than you!" Annie sent a glare his way but remained quiet.
While Dev and Annie were whispering, Maan continued to rant about Geet's antics the night before and after a while Geet had enough. She interrupted him, "Mr. Khurana! We only have one hour of training daily! I would appreciate if you would not waste it with your rants!"
Maan took in a sharp breath at Geet's words but Geet was not finished, "I hope you are done with your temper tantrum because I wish to go back to fulfilling my dreams!"
After that, Maan did not speak unless he needed to correct her. Geet continued with her training but with relief on her face. Normally, Geet would not have scolded Maan like that, but her fear, that his rants would make her loose her confidence, made her interrupt Maan and retort coldly. But still the guilt of scolding her teacher remained with her and try as she might she could not push the guilt away. She kept on being reminded that she back talked to the one person who took chance with her and was helping her gain her dream job.
It was early in the evening when Annie passed by Geet's room. As she passed she saw something that made her stop and backtrack. She looked into Geet's room and watched as Geet dressed in one of the new clothes admired herself in the mirror. Annie's eyes widened. Getting ready? Oye hoye! But for what?
"Geet! What are you getting ready for?"
Geet was pulled out of her thoughts by Annie's voice. She turned and smiled.
"You are looking gorgeous by the way!", Annie said and Geet's eyes lit up with happiness.
"Waise why are you getting ready? Anything special?", Annie wondered and Geet blushed.
Annie raised an eyebrow. So something special it is!
Geet shrugged, "Actually... woh... main ... woh... I met a guy yesterday. He wants me to show him Dilli so I am going with him. That's all!"
Annie was beyond surprised now. Geet was going on a date? Interesting.
"You know what? Why don't I help you?", Annie asked and Geet nodded eagerly. Annie joined her and started doing her hair. As Annie worked, Geet explained about how they planned to meet near Red Fort excitedly.
Maan had just arrived from his work when he looked up and his breath stopped. Dressed in a new designer salwar kameez was Geet. She looked stunning, Maan realised. She neared him and he looked at her in wonder. Did she dress like this for me? His heart stuttered.
But Geet passed by hollering, "I am going out. See you later!" and walked right out of the door. Dev, who had followed Maan, gave her a wave. She waved him back as she walked away. Maan was stupefied. What is happening here?
"Where is Geet going?", Dev asked as she looked at Annie curiously. Annie, who had followed Geet, smirked at him, "She is going on a date!" Maan took in a sharp breath at her words. Dev noticed it and smirked but Annie remained clueless as she continued to speak, "She met a guy yesterday!"
Maan felt his anger boiling at the thought of Geet with a guy. Then his brain reminded him of the male friend calling her in the morning and his anger reached the boiling point.
"How dare she?", Maan growled, "How dare she go out when she is supposed to be studying? She has no right to waste her time with us. And how can she go out with a guy who she met yesterday? Geet has gone mad!" Maan stormed off as Annie frowned. Bhai ko kya hua?
Dev smirked. My guess is definitely right. Bro is falling for Geet!
And that's it for today folks!
Next update is on 31st December where Maan will get more jealous!
Thank you, take care and have fun,
Kalpana
