Chapter 3
She had two choices.
Follow her fellow trainees into the huge eating hall, or take a plane back home.
Either way, she was pretty much screwed.
The only thing that was running her mind at the moment was; what the hell is he doing here?
As far as Taani knew, Rey wasn't the army kind of guy. He had his goals stretched out for him, ever since college. He always was going to get an MBA and go work for his father. Then why the hell was he here, training to be a military officer?
She knew she couldn't walk away, because, hell, her father wanted her to do this, she wanted to do this. But she also knew she couldn't exactly walk in there and greet Rey as though everything was okay, because it wasn't. She walked out on him, without an explanation, without a clarification. Either way, like she said before, it would a loss for her.
So, taking a deep breath she decided to walk into the room, after all. Maybe he wouldn't notice her. Maybe he would completely miss her walking around. Maybe he will suddenly go blind.
Oh who was she kidding? She was in so much trouble!
Walking into the room, she quickly tried to blend into the huge crowd that was moving in with her. Just as they entered, everyone quickly spread, leaving her in the open.
Damn it! Damn it all to hell! Now, her plan of blending in with the rest of the trainees was a flop! Now what to do?
Taking a slow breath she just decided to walk in and ignore everyone. She didn't care if he saw here and blew up. Maybe he would get angry and just create a huge scene which will cause him kicked out.
Oh how she wished for that to happen. Alas, she was sure it wouldn't.
She started towards the huge line in front of the serving station, slowly scanning the crowds for a familiar face. She didn't see any honey brown eyes, or strong jaws just yet, but she knew she had to be careful.
Suddenly, Taani felt her back stiffen in defense as she felt someone following her steps. Their proximity was at a safe distance, yet gave out an unpleasant vibe to her. She was careful not turn around suddenly and scare her stalker so she just continued her way to the line in the front. She could slowly feel the distance between them decreasing and felt something move closer towards her body. At once, she whipped around and grabbed the object, which just happened to be a hand moving to grab her butt, and twisted it, making the person behind her fall to their knees in agony. At once, the passersbys' and the people who were sitting near the scene gasped or yelped, shocked at the scene unfolding in front of them.
Taani quickly brushed off the hair that had come on to her face and stared down at the guy now on his knees, his face screwed up in pain. She had seen him in the bus before, while travelling, but other than that knew nothing of him.
He had the same buzz cut as the rest of the boys did, and had a dark face with dark eyes. Even though, he was crouched down in pain Taani could see that he was very lean and well built.
Taani glared at him roughly, and squeezed his hand harder. "What the hell?" She practically growled.
The guy winced in pain and tried to wiggle out of her grasp. "Ow... I'm sorry... I was... ow... I was just... My friends... They dared me to do this..."
Taani glared at him once as she let go of his hand. He quickly corrected his position and rubbed his wrist, trying to ease the pain.
"Are you and your friends still in high school?" Taani said gritting her teeth. "Stay the hell away from me! Douchebag!" Taani turned around to walk away when she noticed that she had attracted a lot of attention to herself. Some were looking at her in awe while others just stared as though she had grown an extra limb right in front of them.
Taani sighed tiredly as she rubbed a hand over her face and pushed a strand of hair under her ear.
So much for staying under the radar.

Rey coughed slightly as he watched Simmi and Nil glaring at one another, slightly amused. He was stationed next to Nil, with Simmi sitting across from them. His eyes darted from the two of them, as he tried to hold back his laughter. The two of them were acting like a bunch of petulant kids.
He shook his head in disbelief and averted his eyes scanning the crowd. The eating hall was filled with loud voices and people as they moved around introducing themselves, making themselves familiar with the other fresh trainees. He watched as the doors of the hall opened once again and another huge group of trainees marched in once again. As soon as the group entered they disbanded like a school of fish at the sight of their predator. Rey's eyes surveyed the group, and his eyes got stuck on a girl who stood still in the middle. His eyebrows crouched as he caught a glance of the side of the face of the girl and he stared at her.
Is that...? No... It can't be! Right? She left. What... No!
Suddenly, he forced out of his thoughts as he felt someone bump into his back. Rey whipped around to look at the person and saw a lean guy looking at him with apology.
"Sorry, I wasn't looking." The guy apologized.
"No, it's fine. No big deal," Rey assured him with a smile. "By the way, I'm Rey. Reyaansh Singhaniya." He introduced himself forwarding his hand for a shake.
The guy smiled softly and took Rey's hand giving it a firm yet friendly shake. "Swayam. Swayam Shekawat,"
"First year?" Rey asked him, mentioning with his hand to take a seat next to him.
"Yeah, You?" Swayam asked taking a seat next to him and passing out a charming smile to Simmi and Nilesh.
"Us too," Rey answered and turned back to Simmi and Nilesh and introduced them to Swayam. The three exchanged greetings and at once launched into a conversation about all their hopes and dreams that were related to being in the army, while Rey just sat there picking at his food. Suddenly, Simmi leapt up from her seat and started to wave someone over. Rey turned around and saw a girl waving back at Simmi with a smile. She was making her way to them.
"Whoa!" Rey heard Swayam sign and smiled a little. Huh! A love story in the army. Who would've thought?
The girl was tall, slender, with fair complexion, long brown hair, doe brown eyes and a soft smile.
"Hi," she greeted Simmi in a soft voice, and Rey noticed Swayam almost drooling at the sight of this new girl. The girl then turned towards the boys and smiled softly, waving her hand in greeting. "Hi, I'm Sharon Rai Prakash,"
The greetings happened with everyone declaring their names and a star struck Swayam mumbling his name like an idiot and Sharon blushing heavily as she caught sight of him, which had Rey holding back his laughter. Sharon also took a seat with the newly formed group and also started a new conversation, while Rey continued his survey of the crowd.
Suddenly, the whole hall dropped quiet and stared into a scene that was apparently taking place in a corner. Rey crouched his eyebrows and craned his neck trying to see what was happening. But all he could see was a girl and a guy, with the girl twisting the guys arm while the guy was wincing in pain. Rey at once was impressed by this and watched, trying to see the girl's face but her back was turned to him. Even though, the guy was muscular he seemed to be defeated by this girl who was half his size. Rey watched as the two talked, her body language clearly stating her anger and his face a picture of pain. Suddenly, the girl let the guy's hand go, and the guy ran away like a mouse on fire. Rey chuckled as he watched, amused at how scared the guy looked, and waited for the girl to turn around so he could see her face. Unfortunately, the huge crowd around her, was in his line of vision, so he just shrugged and turned back to his friends, who were staring at the scene jaws dropped open and eyes wide, completely missing the crowd dispersing and the girl turning around. Even though, in the back of mind he knew he was impressed, he wasn't here to watch someone else impress a crowd and walk away with glory. He was here to prove himself something. What, he quite didn't know yet.
Rey laughed looking at his new mates and leaned over to snap Nilesh's open jaw close. "Look, it's just a girl kicking a guy's ass. Big deal!"
The rest turned towards Rey, their shocked expressions now on a nonchalant Rey, who had now gone back to picking on his food. "Dude! Did you not see the size of the guy and then compare it with the size of the girl?!" Swayam exclaimed. "That was AWESOME!" He said, throwing his hands up in the air, just for extra effect.
Rey raised his eyebrow at him amused. "Suuurrree," Rey said dragging his words and acted like he was excited and started bouncing in his seat in fake giddiness, "OH MY GOD THAT WAS SO FREAKING AWESOME! I CANT EVEN... LIKE SERIOUSLY! SO COOL!" and then went back to his unaffected self, "Ok I'm done. Can we move on now?"
Everyone shook their heads at him, as he put his food in his mouth, like it was no big deal, and went back to look at the spot where everything had occurred and saw that now the crowd had disbanded and the girl walking away from the scene to the food counter. They watched as the girl collected her food, and turned around looking for a place to sit, as Rey continued to shove food in his mouth with boredom and disinterest. Sharon and Simmi exchanged looks, and told the guys that they would be back and proceeded towards the girl standing at the front looking lost.
"Hi!" The girls greeted her, making Taani turn around defensively. Seeing that they just normal trainees, she quickly put a smile on her face, not wanting to look rude.
"Hi," she greeted back, in a much mellower tone.
"That was amazing!" Simmi exclaimed pointing back at the place where the scene had occurred.
Taani felt her face grow hot and looked down, the small smile that was painted on her lips now a little warmer and heartfelt than before. "Thanks,"
"By the way, I'm Sharon," Sharon said pointing to herself, and then pointed to Simmi who stood grinning at Taani, "And this is Simmi,"
Taani forwarded her hand to the girls to shake, balancing her tray on her left hand "Taani. Taani Shekawat."
The girls shook hands and familiarized themselves, and after a while Simmi and Sharon turned back to the guys who were now involved in a deep conversation and were laughing wildly.
"Come, we'll introduce you to our other friends," Sharon said pointing towards their direction, with Taani nodding, "Great! come!"
The three girls made their way towards the laughing trio with Simmi announcing Taani's presence gleefully. "Guys! Meet the girl who kicked the ass of the guy twice her size!" making Swayam and Nil look up while Rey put his head on his hands in exasperation. All hail the new campus celebrity! Rey thought amusedly.
The two guys introduced themselves, shaking and waving their hands while Rey just sat with his back on her, his head still on his hand. Taani scrunched her eyebrow at his back and looked at him still sitting there not even having the slightest of manners to turn around and look at her. How rude! Taani thought, offended. Shrugging, Taani looked at the guys who were looking at her and smiled.
"Hi! You don't need to call me that," Taani said jokingly. "I go by the name Taani. Taani Shekawat,"
Rey quickly stiffened hearing that voice and that name. He slowly, almost stiffly took his head off his hands and stared at the front shocked. Was it? No it couldn't. But that voice... That name... Maybe it's someone else. Maybe it's not even her.
Rey quickly realized that everyone was now staring at him, waiting for him to turn to Taani and greet her with an awkward silence over them like a blanket. He just stayed put in his seat, still a little shocked at hearing that voice and that name.
Sensing something wrong, the guys exchanged glances and Nilesh jumped in starting to introduce Rey, when Rey snapped out of his trance. Rey looked at Nilesh, making him shut up at once and stood up turning around slowly.
Taani watched as this guy with something familiar about him, stood up, making the muscles in his back stretch slowly. He turned around, almost unwilling and faced her, making Taani gasp and take a step back. "Rey," she whispered his name, while Rey stood staring at her, his normally kind eyes immediately turning into deep black pits with anger and betrayal.
Rey turned around, hoping for the best and preparing for the worst, having no idea which was which. If it was Taani, was the best or the worst? He had no idea. He turned and was immediately met by her innocent face that was now covered in curiosity and felt his heart thump. He didn't know whether he was happy seeing her again, or angry by the fact that he was now standing in front if the girl who had broken his trust and had felt him stranded 8 years back. He stared her down, their eyes instantly meeting and speaking a lot of words. Rey instantly felt a surge of fury and unfaithfulness making his body go rigid and brown eyes cold.
The four spectators watched the duo, who were staring at each other with so many emotions between them and felt instantly awkward as they witnessed something that was definitely intimate and personal. They shifted in their places uncomfortably trying to look away from the two who just stood there staring at one another. Finally not being able to take it, Nilesh hesitantly spoke looking from Rey to Taani, making them come out of the trance at once.
"Umm... Taani, this is..." Nilesh started only to be interrupted by Rey's voice which was full of emotions.
"She knows who I am. Don't you, Taani?" Rey spoke feeling his throat clogged up with emotion. He stared at Taani, almost challenging her to answer him. His anger was now at a breaking point, the pain of losing his father, having a mother who doesn't recognize him, and just the fact that all this happened just after Taani had run out on him, getting to him. "Finally courageous enough to face me?" he snapped angrily as Taani just stood there opening and closing her mouth like a fish out of water. Out of all the times, this had to be the time for her to go speechless.
Stop him, Taani. Talk to him. Tell him everything. Listen to what he has to say. Say SOMETHING! Taani thought desperately.
"Rey... I..." Taani started only to have Rey interrupting her again.
"You know what? I don't have time for this!" Rey started climbing over the bench aggressively, and pushing Taani away as she stepped closer to him, trying to talk. He continued to ignore the trying Taani and turned back to the rest of the group who was staring at the two in astonishment and shock. "I'll see you guys later, yeah?" Rey forced a crooked smile on his face and started to walk away completely ignoring the questioning looks from his new friends and the broken and distressed looks and calls from Taani.
"Rey!" Taani called after him as he continued to walk away. "Rey, WAIT! Damn it!" Taani placed the tray in her hand on the bench that Rey was formerly occupying and ran out after him, ignoring the looks that she got from the four and everyone else around her who had turned to look at what had disturbed their conversations with their shouts. Ignoring all, Taani ran.
For the first time, not away or from something, but towards it.
"Rey wait! Please!" Taani ran after him, as he continued walking away. She quickly caught up with him and grabbed his hand, only to have him stop to turn around to look at her with so much anger and fury. He roughly pushed her hand away that was holding his and took a step forward almost getting into her face. But Taani also didn't back down, though her eyes her now filling with hurtful tears.
"What?" Rey's voice rang with aggression and loudness making passerbys turn around to look at them, enquiringly. But no one stopped to see what was happening, as clearly even though they were curious, they weren't exactly interested in watching a show-down between the former lovers. Rey and Taani also didn't seem to notice any of the looks and attention that they were getting as they just stared at one another, trying to decipher the feelings written in the other person's eyes.
"Look, I know you are mad, but please if you would just..." Taani started having Rey once again cut her in the middle.
"Mad? MAD?" Rey cried in frustration, throwing his hands up in the air, stepping away from her in the process. "Oh Taani, I'm freaking livid! You betrayed me! You walked out! Just like that," he snapped his fingers trying to show her how he was feeling. "Was it that easy? I get it you didn't have the easiest life, but running away? From me? From your parents? From your life? From us? Was it that easy?" Rey questioned Taani, while Taani just shook her head, desperately trying to make him understand."I loved you! So much! With everything! And you ruined my life! You ruined everything! I just..." Rey's voice broke in the middle and he looked away. "You know what?" he asked, reducing his volume and turning to Taani with a defeated look on his face, "Stay away from me! Please! If you are gonna run away again, then never run towards me or with me. Stay out of my life, my sight and my world! Just stay-away!" he said putting force on the last two words. He turned around not once sparing a glance at the girl he was leaving behind. It hurt too much. Looking at her, being in front her and not being able to touch her or kiss her hurt too much. And it was all her fault. She was the one to blame for the heartache that the two of them were going through. It was all her.
Taani just stared at him walking away. He was right. It was all her fault. It was all her doing. She had somehow ruined his life, how exactly, she didn't know. But whatever happened because of her had obviously hurt him a lot.
Today, she knew how Rey must have felt when she had left. Hurt, broken, angry. Because that was exactly how she was feeling as she stood there watching him do it. She had dug her own hole, and now she had fallen into it.
But she knew. When she had fallen into his dark hole, she had taken down the guy she loved the most with her as well.
