Part 16

Chapter 17
She saw her father standing with his back towards her as she stood at the doorway. Where was her mother?
"Appa ready a?"
"Huh?"
He turned just in time as she entered her parent's bedroom.
"Appa? Amma kita sollalala?"

"Ena sollala?" she heard her mother.
Sheesh! Why was she so stupid? She hadn't seen her mother standing in front of her father, so technically it wasn't her fault, was it?
She saw her father backing and holding on to her hand as her mother stood looking at them in "apparent" anger, with her hands on her hip.
"Appa...es aidalama?"
"Appa kum ponnukum ena secretu? Ein kita solla poreingala illaya?"
Her father looked at her with a "disapproving look". If she didn't know him better, she would have guessed he was going to start counting 1 2 3 to run away.
Something was amiss...What was it?
Ah! Got it!
"Appa ein pa lipstick poturukeinga?"
Ok! Why is his eyes widening so much?
Why is he looking afraid?
Why is he looking at mom?
And why the hell is she being all shy?

Whatever it was, there seemed to be a silent conversation between them.
What better way to escape the wrath of her mom?
Using the silence as an opportunity, she slipped out of the room.
Sorry, dad. I still love you! was her last thought as she exited their room to give her parent's some space.

Back inside the room,
"Romba vekka padathinga. Unga faceku othu varala," she said as she wiped her lipstick off his lips.
"Poi en fans kita ketu paru. Avunga solluvanga..." he said as he put a strand of hair behind her ear.
"Aiyada athu yaru fans, naan illama?"
"Pooja kutty thaan vera yaaru?"
"Aaappa...Appavum ponnu apdiya orai mathiri irukeinga."
"Seri va, Pooja wait panitu irupa," said Arjun casually as he exited the room.
What he didn't realize was that Priya had become a little sad after she had said the last sentence. All these months she had hoped that she could overcome the dark truth. But somewhere inside her mind, there was always a voice that said; Arjun was not Pooja's real father...

Later that evening...
His eyes focused only on one thing : HER!
Everything else blurred out inclusive of his rationale.
His hearing masked off that not one word anyone said entered his mind.
A bussing sound filled his ears and he snapped around as if looking for that one thing that seemed to be ready to take his life.
He felt an intense wave of fear through him. Then the room started spinning. His whole body was shaking. He could not catch his breath. His heart was pounding out of his chest.
And then...

"ai!"
"Jai!"
Someone was calling out to him. Who was it?
"Jai!"
He opened his eyes slowly and focused on his wife.
"Hee...Hema?"
"Ena achu?"
He swallowed hard. His head was trobbing. Why was he here anyway? It was his wedding anniversary dinner party, right? What had...?
And everything came to him like a train of thoughts and he held his head in frustrations.
"Jai. Calm down. Onum illa. Just calm down."
Taking a loud gulp of air, he tried to explain things to her. Words didn't make meaning. He closed his eyes trying to reconsider his situation. No. He wouldn't tell her. She wouldn't understand. Was he going to die with his deadly secret?

Meanwhile in the hall before other guests in hushed voices and customary greetings...
"Jaiku onum agathilla? Ein maigi vilithaan?"
"Aiyoo. Unga friend thena neengalai poi kelunga."
"Illa..."
"Pressure low aiduchunu. Naan. Oru doctor sonna nambiki illaya ongaluku?"
"Athuku ena pananum?"
"Nala sapdanum. Nala thunganum. Habba. Ithoda 10 thedava ungakita solliachu. Alla vidunga. Naan poi Pooja enga irukanu pakkuren."
