ek jashn... 3 much

it's wonderful to see the thread alive and in its own way dhakdhakking. yeah, indu, jashan is here but where be tashan? 😆 rhea, cin, kowsie, mani... the subtle beautiful days of ipk call us and yes, watching them in hotstar clarity further causes extreme acidity.

but it's set in an environment i don't recognise at all... that is no ipk. and so, somehow, it just makes me feel weird. as in no "feeling, arnav ji, feeling."

i have often been reminded of the godfather while watch ipk, especially barun. oh that opening sequence. a young callow actor in a cravat of all things (because the ties were reflecting the sun too much and star didn't approve), eyes fixed on smarmy paan chewing chacha ji... cold, metallic, lethal and sure that gaze... i had thought of michael when he became the godfather.

while chatting with indu, i'd written this:

"in fact, yesterday i got looked at very strangely by my younger colleague for saying this reminded me of another actor/character who shook my insides.

al pacino as michael corleone. remember? his evolution was really the other way round. but really, both sides of a character carries a bit of the other side... everything is there in the original total being. depends which aspect is more in view when.

but that stillness in his face... that congealed power, the mystique... in no way was it less than this. i don't care if all are laughing at me now. 😳

not a question of quantity though, it was really about the nature of the shot... the actors, the characters. i have often prattled on about wanting to see barun in a michael like role. as a 14 year old, the godfather by mario puzo was one of the most fascinating books i'd read, just after i saw the film... that experience is in me, even full frontal lobotomy may not extricate it. now you know my thing for bad boys ha ha. but really the authority, the magnificence, the power, and the vulnerability in both these actors in these shots i can't get over. if vijay verma was an inspiration for the writers, i suspect so was michael corleone.

and the essential sexiness of al pacino and barun sobti... death.

al pacino used to make me feel all sorts of things... though barun leaves me a complete wreck. i am so blessed to have seen all the shots in this post. yay.

one thing, gotta say, no one does shades the way barun does 'em.
sound effects as indi falls off the cliff."

as i watched episode 3 of jashn, these shades were all gone. a flat haha feel to barun, his eyes, those eyes, sigh... just don't connect. don't give goosebumps. i am pretty sure, the actor in him is not even slightly touched by what he is doing right now.
he seems to be so out of it.

and akash asr talk was like akshay and barun chatting with that oh look at us, we're so cool air, actually the so called "adult" talk was just that... so called. a bit outdated even... the pitch of writing is off key... it rarely used to be so at one point.

i never ever thought i'd think barun was looking not good... didn't even feel like making an edit. definitely don't want to see 3 again. saddest thing, while subtitling one and two, saw the scenes again and again and couldn't find a thing that held my attention, made me sigh, made me feel.

it's not about mellow or not, mushy or not, or youthful or not, or effect of kkg or not...

this same format, using older material cleverly to keep us thrilled and bring new viewers in, but written by a good writer, even with the "maha twist" of no talk asr talking, and directed with interest, making actors find their characters and holding on, with barun interested... could have been a deadly thing.

this is a group of friends that star roped in to do a cutesy thing without too much effort or love being given to it at all. star owns ipk and obviously does not value its merit beyond the money it can make. when i heard sanaya "choreographed" the promo dance, i was like what the. this is the same show that had teri meri, twice, that fab awkward dance of preeto's wedding, and ab na jaa... and now they are doing this...

i mentioned the godfather. if you've seen it... there's a poignant scene where don corleone looks at his eldest son... sonny. dead. and marlon brando says that memorable, "look what they've done to my son."

the words resonate...

him on that first day.

him in 395. right at the end almost.

smitten yes... and a lot has happened, he is not looking as spiffy, hair is strangely done, stubble not as neat, he was possibly not keeping too well, but to me, asr is still there in those eyes. that way of looking... the aura.

in fact, my dp... him in total love, acting like a sankafied man rushing back to his gulabi biwi again and again that day... but still that is asr, no mistaking it. huq hai tumhara, pause, thrust lips a bit, just a bit and let a look invade the eyes... mujh pe.

also here asr in lotsa lau in 343:

(by this time i was already watching only for these two actors and the little bits of abs inspired moments we got from them.)

and again, playing basketball (375/6). we all know asr could not have been the basketball star of his college, and the dilution is making us go a bit haywire, but barun still manages to hold onto something asr. something.

that essential asr-ness, a lithe power, a thing in the being... even when he is mushy or apologising or being silly, whatever.

this time, i just missed my man. i hope khushi is not played with more than she already has been.

IPKKND Ek Jashn Episode 3 Subtitles

ASR:
Aman, why have you got train tickets?

I'm going by train...

Just now Aman told me, Khushi bhabi doesn't like train food.

Bullshit.

She's scared...

The first time I took her on a plane, from take off to landing, she said Devi Maiyya's name 25,000 times.

"Devi Maiyya, please be with the pilot!"

"No no! Devi Maiyya, please be with the wings of the plane!"

"Arnav ji, is it over?"... "Arnav ji, have we arrived?",,, "Arnav ji, when are we getting down?"

The entire while this went on!

As soon as we got to the destination, she went straight to the kitchen to do some stress busting with jalebi making.

The only problem was that it was a seven star resort.

Even Akash and Payal couldn't stop laughing.

Sometimes I really find it strange that Payal and Khushi are sisters... there's Payal who doesn't say anything...

and there's Khushi.

Akash:
Bhai (brother), this may be said... about us as well.

ASR:
C'mon, dude!

'Sup.

Akash:
You notice anything different about me?

ASR:
Have you grown taller still?

Akash:
No, Bhai! If it were Khushi ji, she'd know instantly.

Just-!

ASR:
Are you trying to rub it in? Khushi isn't here, Akash.

Akash:
Okay! Alright, alright... uh... I'm... not wearing glasses?!

ASR:
Aaah! Payal said (not) to?

(awkward pause, ASR amused.)

ASR:
Akash... after marriage, you've absolutely... or do you take them off because... they came in the way?

Akas:
Wha!!... comes... in the way... of?

ASR:
Getting... close? Intimate?

Akash:
Oh! Oh! haha... uh...

Well, Bhai, you seem to really know what's good for... intimacy...

But looking at it from that angle... you should be clean shaven-

ASR:
Uh! Huh!

Akash:
Alright! Alright, alright, fine! Tell me one thing, when you got your car, what was the first thing you did?

ASR:
Khushi cracked a coconut...

Akash:
Oh! Khushi ji!

So on the rear view mirror of your car, what hangs?

ASR:
Devi Maiyya's chunari (veil).

Akash:
Bhai... marriage and being in love have got you too... (laughs)

ASR:
Coffee!

Akash:
Thank you!

ASR:
No thanks!

How's Payal? Baby bump showing yet?

Akash:
Hmm! Totally! Due date next month!

ASR:
Time flies, man!

Remember how you got Payal to say "I love you?"

Khushi:
Payal ji, I have tried very... VERY hard to talk to you...

But you... alas... you don't want to talk,

you don't want to listen even to what I say...

don't want to accept my love...

then what's the use of me being... alive?!!!

Whaaat?!!!

I am going!

Very... VERY far from you!

Now...

Payal:
What!!!

ASR:
Yesss! If because of you anything happens to my brother-

Payal:
Where? ! Where is he now?!!

ASR:
I'd seen him going toward Scandal Point...

Payal:
What?! If you saw him going there, why didn't you stop him! What sort of a brother are you?!!

ASR:
WHAT shall I say now???!!!

Khushi:
WHaaat is the meaning of this "WHAT shall I say now?" Er... say nothing! He's your brother, go look for him!

Khushi:
Jiji!!

Payal:
Akash ji!!!

Akaaashh ji!!!

I lost you, Akash ji! Why did you do this?

How shall I tell you now how much I love you!

Khushi:
Jiji!

Akash:
Careful, Payal ji!

You remember, how you convinced my mother about the marriage?

What did Khushi ji teach you? Couples...? Weddings... something?

ASR:
Mami wasn't convinced by what Khushi said!

Mami:
(copious tears) Arnab! I want to hear nothing about couples (jodi) now!

I am wrong...everyone has told me that many times! I'M GOING!!!

ASR:
One minute!

Mami:
Aaah... boo hoo... sob sob.

ASR:
Mami ji, I just want that you should assess... this step you're about to take... what will be the result of that.

Just once... about this decision... without being emotional... think.

Not from your heart... from your head.

Today, you're the daughter in law of the Raizadas...

This family gives you status, a place, in society...

If you leave this home and go, then you alone will bear a loss in this deal.

You do know that everyone will come together and get Akash and Payal married...

Whether your consent is there... or not.

And once Payal and Akash get married, then Payal, even without wanting to, will take your place in the house in just a day.

Mami:
Haaanh!!!

ASR:What are you going to gain from that?

In one stroke, your position, your hard work, and all that you've done for this family, all will be wasted.

And you'll reach the place from where you started out.

Mami:
Aaah ahhh!

ASR:
Now figure out how much you stand to lose in this deal!

Respect... and the glory of being a Raizada daughter in law will go of course...

along with that, you'll lose the power to have any say in the decisions of Akash's life...

Now the decision is yours...

You have to decide which deal works for you...

Mami ji, as a businessman, I'll give you this advice...

See where your profit/advantage lies.

If you still wish to leave this house, then...

Akash:
Anyway... Happy happy anniversary to you!

ASR:
Thank you!

Akash:
Uh huh! Payal has given strict instructions that you must only open it with khushi ji.

(message tone)

Uh oh!

ASR:
What happened?

(message tone)

Khushi's update!

Checking into Parathe Wali Gali!

Eating spicy chaat that someone cannot handle...?

and rabri jalebi that someone can never... eat.

Akash:
Best of luck! I'll take your leave.

ASR:
I'll see you soon!

Akash:
Flight's in the evening... see you.

Aah! Yes, Bhai... Khushi ji wants to say something to you...

ASR:
What?

Akash:
That thing... about which we were talking...

ASR:
Khushi wants to talk...?

About parathas?

Rabri!

Akash:
No, Bhai... that... me and Payal!

Now something is going to happen...

ASR:
You're leaving!

Akash:
NO, Bhai! Something...

ASR:
Mmm... that you're going to have a baby!

Akash:
Exactly!

Baby!

ASR:
What!!

Akash:
Alright, best of luck! I'll see you later, bye!

ASR:
Khushi wants to talk to me about KIDS?!!

Di, you have to do something for me...

Anjali:
Yeah, tell me!

Chhotey!! You want me to do this?!!

ASR:
Please!

but even then... really, did they have to do this to ipk? ah nevermind.

we shall stay i love with what we are in love with.

True!!! I am in love with all Ipk episodes and started to dislike it when Aarav came in the picture till the last episode!
But there were also some other scenes with Rabba Vees like the one in front of Mami and Nani

And I am proud to say that I showed Ipk to my best friend and she is damn in it! And she is also in love with it and Arnav! Even when she is 100% French so I have to interprete each and every dialogs

That's the magic of the original Ipk! To attract people who doesn't even have knowledge of the language nor the traditions and cultures shown in it

And Indiji that last part about "staying in love with what we are in love with" 👏🤗

Beautiful post!!!👏 Indiji/ Indi Di

About comparing Ipk to the Godfather well as I haven't seen it I don't know but reading your thoughts I now understand it

I think as far as I am concerned I did and will always relate Arnav Singh Raizada to Mr.Darcy ❤️
With that arrogance, self-sufficient attitude and everything about the aura they carry! Also with the way they declare their love with first fighting the attraction and then going on their knees for the girls! ❤️
And Khushi and Lizzy with their kind but strong attitude they both stood their ground while fighting with their soul mates and they changed them also (am not talking about Ek Jashn's Arnav)

And true in the 3rd Ek Jashn there wasn't anything... I, who watched the 2 previous episodes kindly this one was blow...
I was so mad! I stayed back at uni to watch it coz I was so impatient to see some Arshi scene but it was bullshit! Like you said Barun seemed quite detached from what he was doing, kind of indifferent to the happenings

I agree with you about that meeting between brothers! It was more like Akshay and Barun meeting again than Arnav and Aakash... That shy Aakash who was had so much respect for his Bhai and that emotionless Arnav who had to be pushed by NK to hug each others when Aakash went to the US were now talking like Best Friends!! There was that disturbing friendly atmosphere not sibling one!

I could believe my ears and eyes when I saw Arnav saying "Come on Dude" before hugging him and Aakash teasing him... well I can accept Aakash teasing but... Arnav and talk about intimacy!!!

I mean what the hell!! When they showed the promo I thought that Ar,av would say just "Did you take them off because they came in the way" and Aakash would say "In the way of" and Arnav would just quirk one eyebrow and smirk but this was went too far!

About the dance... never heard about that! Who can forget Teri Meri and the other dances? I get goosebumps each time I hear the tune without even seeing the tune! Arnav and Khusi took that song to another level

When you talked about your dp I just went up to see it again and kept staring at it for minutes! That was the golden days!!
And that basketball moment was bullshit! Like we all knew Arnav changed with his Maa's death and they showed him with that Sheetal and twosome like he actually was a carefree Harvard student! He has his whole family's problems and his Di's responsibility on his shoulders! The girlfriend part was ok but they will never ever get me to think that Arnav spend carefree and amazing time at Harvard

(was very delighted to see the photos!! Those eyes! That face!! OMG!!)

Hope Khushi will be the same! And hoping for the chemistry to still be there with the Rabba Vee least they change that too! Anyway I will keep watching Jashn but guess what! Semmes like at least for me that having a sequel or an epilogue or whatever it is will not satisfy us but anger us

hi kowsi,

sorry, as usual i have glaring typos. 😆

so a french friend you roped in... brill. kate and cynthia here also don't speak or understand hindi, but dare anyone keep them away from ipk. 😃 it is a great show and will remain that... jashn and other hiccups will just go away.

i was thinking why i can't bring myself to be "rational" about jashn and realised it never was about the dimaag... where you declare to yourself a position like, no matter what, if it's barun sanaya and ipk i will love it. it's really a dil thing... what touches the dil and settles in it does that, the rest doesn't really matter. i am thinking of khushi now in her heer ranjha costume looking resplendent and saying, when the one whom you love is before you then the eyes speak, not the lips... then asr in weird gear looking resplendent too falling over her saying jab jo bura... the very nature of love itself being spoken out loud on a garish stage while story is going haywire and yet all you can do is watch unblinking, feeling your heart beat pick up speed. classic moments. and it registers in the dil... never leaves...

i hope your french friend falls in love as we have.. i wonder how asr will sound in french... and khushi kumari gupta... teehee.

hi kowsie,

read pride years ago.. and i can get why many of my friends and girls on the forum mention darcy when thinking of asr. in fact, there was this brilliant vm made by someone, she had taken the trailer of pride and prejudice and replaced it with ipk scenes. unfortunately all vms are off the net.

ohhh that shy akash. i just adored the chap and thought akshay did such a good job. and there was lots of chemistry in the akash payal jodi too. tender sweet and in its own way sexy.

yes 😃 nice reminder, nk had to get slightly emotionally not at all expressive asr to hug akash. so now he is all "dude" and "mom." nah, no point i tell myself, getting angry... just let it be. asr is asr and no one can mess with him.

also akshay is not looking like akash at all...

intimacy. haha my biggest problem is with the word itself. would asr use such a dated (when spoken) and formal word at all if he has to say that to akash. especially now that he is all dude and mom 😆? writing somehow without a feel for things... words. even if he didn't say dude, etc., he'd just be asr and possibly say, akash, what's wrong with you, you were never this stoopid (sigh in that asr way) or something like that, or even just coolly say, you know while kissing...

intimacy? even darcy wouldn't say that i bet.

but yes, hoping that chemistry is intact. i think it is...

ASR mellowing down is fine. that is expected.. he did mellow down long time ago.. he did smile/ laugh.. danced with her tunes.. did unthinkables. memorized bollywood dialogues...but his core was intact...asr doesn't crack jokes about height.. does he?

I don't really get this role reversal thing. When was Khushi mellow, weak, follow his foot steps without miss? In that office cabin sequence, post 300, when we saw asr coming back briefly.. didn't he say.. if she ever realized how much ego she is filled with? she is equally angst filled/ egoistic as he is.. the way she expresses it could be different... and thats what he fell for to an extent.. this girl who can give him strongly back.

will be back..

hi indu..

did you come back?

crude reminders... fantastically well put. that's what they are. in fact crude is how this whole thing seems to be... while the one thing ipk never ever was, was that. even when writing went off... even masala mama, babli, sheetal... dadi... this thick flat crude thing never there. always a subtlety, an air of something deeper, more... i often think, if any serial could have shown the hero worship some kids have for older men in their lives... crush... bordering on something a bit uncomfortable... ipk could. which is where they sort of went with babli but without thought or direction and messed it therefore.

yeah... that core of asr was always intact. even when he said the silly bowing before her thing... always asr.

that office scene, his profile thrust forwardas he tells her she too has an ego... ufff. lovely track that would have been... might have been... if dadi attack hadn't been designed helter skelter in effort to get trp.

but as you have said before, dadi gave us a beautifully angry asr... a man so in love... where my wife doesn't go, i don't... fingers hooked under her chin, lifting her face... looking at her with that endless love...

who is this man? and yes, he doesn't crack puerile jokes.

Well, ASR would know, since many things have come in the middle of..

But, the "taking ur leave" moment was was so out of place. 2 brothers who have lived closely all their life definitely won't "take your leave".

what am missing in barun's rendition of ASR this time is the subtlety in acting. did we everthink we'd have to write this. pretty unbelievable what's going on on the screen. I seem to recall in one of the interviews he has said that ASR had to convey a lot through the eyes, keeping his face impassive, compared to the more loud and flashy Sukhi. But, in today's episode when the brothers were pulling each others leg, ASR's face had a more direct comic expression than what am used to. not only too loud an expression, it was flat, he was just "acting" not being asr. i am speechless (in😆 a manner of speaking). what is the matter? why this disconnect? and i am seeing the hotstar tweets, with do you want to see the "lovebirds," etc., coming at us and all those so called funny so called cool shots of barun sanaya... so okay, now ipk is being "marketed" like soap. but sir, why? and for whom? and barun said he liked this "concept?" dying to know what excited him... the marketing strategy? because as actor, there's nothing to be liked here.

The stark contrast was the impeccably timed, acted, directed and most importantly smartly written moments pre Payash wedding. That scene where Khushi improvises about the suicide note after ASR is confounded by Payal's question is a classic. yes, payal's question too good. asr stumped. sanaya was magnificent. that "what do you mean whattt shall i say now!"... the reading of the letter.. the corny winks and the delight of a kid sister also the sanka of khushi that her plan worked... ufff.

The brusque man indi died here getting swept into the excitement of a crazy plan laid out by a girl he can't get out of his head. All the heaviness post Diwali forgotten in this dash of freshness and happiness along with a date of chai bicoot. Kuch Kuch hota hai then heralded the flirtateous ASR that left us all with an acidity attack that thankfully never quite cured itself.

With Mami, the shatir businessman trying his best to fix his cousin's wedding which also meant a lot to Khushi. Also the apology that he would give Payal with full sincerity and least amount of dramatics.

In hotstars flawless print the short gelled hair, fresh ASR and young vivacious Khushi.. Loved both the flashback sequences..

actually, even without high res those scenes are dangerous. with it... brain is blanked out. and then i see too pink akashay or too express it all barun... play of expressions just not you know... that. sadness.

good to read your take... been too long without all this.
