They told their respective families that they had thought things over and decided not to break up. Everyone but Suhani's mom was mostly pleased, though Yuvraj's family did worry that after pulling himself together he may be risking another heartbreak. But no one said anything, and Suhani returned, feeling sheepish and self-conscious, but also relieved. It wasn't just getting away from Ankit, who was pissed off as hell. She genuinely felt good about this.
The night of her return she had made it clear that she'd meant what she'd said about making it a real marriage. She was wearing a skimpy nightie--she'd worn shorts and a T to bed before--and turned towards him when he came to bed, unlike what she used to do earlier--turn away, be absorbed in her tablet or mobile, or just give off a touch-me-not air. He felt sad for some reason. He settled down, picked up his book, and looked towards her. "Goodnight, Suhani."
"Goodnight," she said in a small voice, realizing that he was right not to rush things. She still felt rejected and foolish, a little angry, but hadn't she done this to him for months?
The equation had changed. Earlier she had always been the one in control, he the supplicant. Now she had made this choice, he had merely agreed. He had proved himself self-reliant enough, she had needed him. The shift in balance actually worked for them. It wasn't like Suhani had changed very much in her ways or her attitude, but with him, towards him, she was different.
Ankit seemed to have backed off. A couple of weeks had passed since her return, and she felt secure enough to start going out alone again. She started going for dancercise classes once more, meeting friends, besides attending events with Yuvraj. A kind of comfort level had formed between them.
The family was a little hesitant around her, but the guys quickly forgave her, dadi was cautiously optimistic, and Ragini and Menka were too decent to be anything but well-behaved. Pratima was never a problem anyway, except that she irritated Suhani.
One evening Yuvraj dropped her off for a concert and promised to pick her up afterwards. He had some meeting with out-of-town clients or he'd have accompanied her, but her friends were attending too, so it wasn't like she'd be alone.
In the interval she was talking to some people who had come up to greet her, when she saw Ankit. She blinked and he was gone; she must be imagining it. She felt a little anxious, but the rest of the evening drove the fear out of her mind.
After the concert, she waited outside the auditorium for Yuvraj, who was late. He was never late, so she'd refused her friends' offer to wait with her and was now feeling uncomfortable as the crowd thinned out and most of the lights were switched off. Where was this guy, what had happened? She called him, and he answered in an absent-minded way. "Yuvraj, where are you? It's 10.30. You were supposed to be here at 10."
"10.30? Oh damn--my watch has stopped. Hold on, I'll be there in 15 tops."
She sat down on the steps and started playing with her phone, which rang just then. "Hello?" she answered. There was silence. Cold fingers of fear crept over her as she recalled thinking she'd seen Ankit earlier. She frantically dialled Yuvraj again, but a hand closed over hers and threw aside the phone. "Hello, Suhani darling. Long time no see."
