Part 7
Yuvraj woke up to find he had no clothes on. As he looked around, he saw Suhani lying beside him, a sheet covering her, but her shoulders bare. He saw a towel flung near the foot of the bed and remembered what had happened the previous night.
He had pulled her onto him, and she had giggled as she found herself in his arms. He looked so cute, hair all dishevelled, those intoxicating eyes, those sexy lips. . .dayyum, this guy was quite hawt, after all. He'd stared at her and then kissed her like a thirsty man drinking at an oasis, his hands pulling at the towel. She'd giggled again and held on to it, saying, "Naughty, naughty! You first," as she undid his shirt and helped him out of it.
He'd been dizzy from the booze, aflame with desire, and crazed with happiness. In a simplistic way, he equated her participation with love. He'd quickly pulled off the rest of his clothes while nuzzling her and then turned off the bedside light and pulled at the towel again, running his hands over her, delirious with joy. She wasn't giggling any longer. He'd lay her down gently and held himself back from jumping on her immediately. But alas, as he explored her body, he'd heard a tiny snore. She'd fallen asleep. He'd felt so mortified! He'd supposed she'd been really tired and had sadly covered her with the sheet and gone to take a shower.
Yuvraj's thoughts returned to the present, and he thought he should let her get up and process the previous night in private. They could talk about it later. Maybe it was just as well nothing had happened while he was a little intoxicated. He straightened his side of the bed, picked up his clothes, just like she'd taught him (and that he usually ignored), then showered, dressed, and went down to breakfast, still all happy and thrilled at the progress in their relationship. She obviously liked him--there had been no hesitancy from her. He had been right about the mutual attraction. It was such a lovely day, such a great life.
Suhani woke up with a splitting headache. God, why was she in the buff? She remembered she'd been knocking back the cocktails, but nothing more. She glanced at Yuvraj's side of the bed, and it looked all tidy, which meant he hadn't come here last night. Thank God, how embarrassing if he'd been here. She saw her towel and realised she must've taken a shower and just crashed.
Yuvraj was dying for Suhani to come down and waiting to see how she would react. Would she be naughty, conspiratorial, or shy? He felt all these things himself. When would she come? Should he go and check on her?
At that moment, Suhani came into the resort dining room, along with a couple she was friends with. The girl, Juhi, worked for Srivastav Enterprises, and her husband Rohit was a businessman, whom Yuvraj didn't much like. They headed straight for the buffet. Suhani picked up some toast, filled a cup with coffee, and joined Juhi and Rohit at their table. She hadn't even seen Yuvraj, who, though a bit disappointed, decided he rather not have their first almost-post-conjugal meeting with others around. He wandered off to wait until they could talk in relative privacy.
Yuvraj loitered around outside, hoping to catch Suhani alone. There was no sign of her, so he finally went back in and saw her in the lobby. She was alone, and her face lit up as he was walking towards her. But her gaze slid past him and as he turned to see where her attention was, she reached for a lime seltzer a waiter had brought her. "Thank you," she said, dismissing the boy with a smile. "God, I need this!"
"Why, what happened?" asked Bhavna, appearing beside Suhani, Amit in tow. "Here are the aspirins you wanted."
"I had too many drinks last night, Bhavna. I just crashed out and have such a headache today!" Amit laughed, shook his head, said something to Bhavna, and went off.
Yuvraj had backed away at Bhavna and Amit's approach, and as he heard Suhani's reply, all his euphoria died. She had been drunk. More drunk than he. She didn't seem to remember anything. She didn't even notice him. Just then he heard Bhavna mention his name. "Where's Yuvraj?"
"Dunno," mumbled Suhani. "He didn't come to the room last night--his side of the bed was undisturbed. Good thing--I had no clothes on when I woke up."
The sisters giggled together, while Yuvraj quietly left and went to the gazebo. He should have known. She had no feelings for him, she hadn't even wondered where he was. This was so over, he thought to himself, anger rising in place of sadness. He had wasted months of his life in false presumptions, useless hopes, and nurturing feelings for someone who didn't care in the least. Enough. He wanted to be free of her and her hold on him.
He saw the girls outside and went up to them, returned Bhavna's "Good morning," and said to Suhani, "I'm leaving now. You'll be going home with your parents, right? I'll say goodbye then. Just send me the divorce papers and I'll sign them." He quickly turned and left.
Her sister looked shocked, Bhavna thought, but wasn't this what she wanted? Suhani stared after Yuvraj, feeling a little like she had killed something, wondering why she felt so hurt.
