Bizarro SSEL
Suhani flung her hair over her shoulder and threw her bag on the bed, impatiently calling Ramesh to bring her some iced tea. "I am so tired," she said, talking to herself, failing to notice Yuvraj, who was sitting with his laptop and had lifted his head to gaze at his indifferent wife. She was so wonderful, it was hard to keep his hands off her, but what could he do? She always had a headache around him.
"You're back, Suhani? How was your day?"
She turned, surprised to see him there. "Oh, you're here? Not working today?"
"It's Saturday. And I'm working, just preparing some charts..." he stopped talking as she turned away, obviously not interested.
But she loved him--why else would she marry him, her family was so much more affluent, so cultured, the Birla fortune was peanuts in comparison. He didn't understand why she kept him at arm's length and seemed always a little annoyed at him, but she probably needed time.
Suhani felt irritated seeing him sitting there like the nerd he was, intruding in her space. It wasn't his fault, he was a nice guy, but she still felt resentment at being tied to him rather than the one she'd wanted to marry--Sharad, his cousin, so much more handsome and dynamic. She still kept the hanky that she had saved from their first meeting.
Her mind went back to the day she and her sister, Bhavna, had been shopping and two guys bumped into them. Sharad had dropped his phone and hanky, and assorted packages, and between apologies and bumping heads as they picked them up, she had been mesmerized by Sharad and forgotten to return his hanky. She hadn't even noticed Yuvraj. And each time she met them, all her attention was for Sharad; she liked him more and more. He was so handsome, so polished, so smart and successful. And look what happened. Here she was married to this Yuvraj, thanks to being too late in realizing the proposal by Yuvraj's mom had been for her son, not her nephew.
She'd heard them discussing that Pratima aunty was going to meet with Sharad's to-be in-laws and when her parents told her the lady had come with a proposal for her, she had jumped to agree without asking anything more. When she woke up to the fact, her dad told her firmly that he wasn't calling off the wedding. Her dad had been livid at the thought of losing the great cricketer he had found in Yuvraj--surprisingly, the nerd was an ace all-rounder, who could only play in her dad's company cricket team if he was connected to the company. Srivi, as most people called Suhani's dad, was a cricket fanatic and had always dreamed of winning the Inter-Companies Shield.
Her mother hated Yuvraj, but could not override her husband. She had always told her daughters they would marry princes. Bhavna's husband actually looked princely and was of the same status as they. But this Yuvraj, spat her mother, was only a prince in name, not worthy of Suhani Srivastav. Bhavna said Yuvraj was nice, really smart and decent, but Suhani was not convinced. Why, their driver's son was better looking. A guy should be impressive, not like Yuvraj. But what could she do now? She had agreed and it was fixed. Should she rebel, threaten to leave? Where could she go? She'd never worked in her life. Sharad was already engaged, so he was a lost cause anyway. She decided she wasn't capable of resisting her dad or forging her own way--not yet. And so, here she was, married to this sappy geek who did nothing but work and stare at her anytime she was around.
