Captain prepares for next challenge

Jayawardene looks towards Australia

Cricinfo staff

October 14, 2007

Mahela Jayawardene: 'If you've had a bad period you have to make sure you learn from your mistakes' AFP
Mahela Jayawardene is already looking forward to Sri Lanka's next challenge, a Test series in Australia, after their 107-run victory in the final one-day international against England in Colombo offered a timely boost. Despite going down 3-2 in a contest they had been expected to win, Jayawardene said the way his side bounced back in the final match bodes well for the future.

"We knew we had this in ourselves and we know we are a very good side so it's good that we're off to Australia in 10 days' time and it was a very good boost for us to go with a win," he said. "It was a good start [to the series] and we finished well but we played some really ordinary cricket in between - it was well below par, especially for our standards at home.

"That's something we really want to work at, but I was quite happy with a lot of individual performances. Batsmen should have taken more responsibility in this tournament with the way we played."

Sri Lanka have a poor record in Australia having struggled with the extra pace and bounce in the wickets on previous tours. But the home side will take the field in a Test for the first time since the retirements of Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath, while Jayawardene feels there is time to adjust to conditions before the opening encounter at Brisbane on November 8.

"What we're going to get in Australia will be totally different," he said. "We've got two warm-up games before the first Test and that's something for us to work on. We've got two or three weeks before the first Test match so we've got ample time to get back into things.

"This is what cricket is all about. If you've had a bad period you have to make sure you learn from your mistakes - that's what being a professional cricketer is all about these days. You don't have that much time to think about what went wrong, we have to get back into things straight away."

Sri Lankan spirits lifted

Mahela Jayawardene and his team-mates celebrate
Getty Images / Cricket Australia
Sri Lanka embarks for Australia in the next fortnight with confidence restored following its emphatic victory in the final one-day international against England.

Despite having already lost the series, captain Mahela Jayawardene is convinced the 107-run victory at the Premadasa Stadium will give his side the jolt required to arrive in Australia with spirits high.

Outplayed in the three previous matches by an improving England side, Sri Lanka bounced back strongly with man of the match Dilhara Fernando claiming 6-27 as the tourists lost 7-15.

It is that kind of performance which Jayawardene knows it will need to repeat if it is to compete during a two-Test series and eight one-day internationals against India and Australia before returning for a three-Test home series against England before Christmas.

"We knew we had this in ourselves and we know we are a very good side so it's good that we're off to Australia in 10 days time and it was a very good boost for us to go with a win," said Jayawardene.

"It was a good start [to the series] and we finished well but we played some really ordinary cricket in between - it was well below par, especially for our standards at home."

"That's something we really want to work at, but I was quite happy with a lot of individual performances. Batsmen should have taken more responsibility in this tournament with the way we played."

Sri Lanka's batting, for so long the strength of their side, was continually undermined by England's attack and it was dismissed for less than 220 in three of the five matches in the series.

It recorded only five half-centuries during the series with Chamara Silva's 70 during last night's victory being their highest individual score in the five matches.

It is a record which Jayawardene knows is not good enough if they are to compete against Australia, who beat them convincingly in May's World Cup final in Barbados, at both Test and one-day level.

"What we're going to get in Australia will be totally different," explained Jayawardene. "We've got two warm-up games before the first Test and that's something for us to work on.

"We've got two or three weeks before the first Test match so we've got ample time to get back into things.

"This is what cricket is all about. If you've had a bad period you have to make sure you learn from your mistakes - that's what being a professional cricketer is all about these days."

"You don't have that much time to think about what went wrong, we have to get back into things straight away."

Jayawardene also believes the forthcoming home Test series against England, which starts in Kandy on December 1, may also be dominated by bowlers and will be an indication of the improvements seamers have made to their games around the world.

"The tracks will be much better, but a lot of fast bowlers around the world have improved a lot," he added. "They've got a lot of different variations.

"They realise that if they are to survive in these kind of conditions they have to come up with different tactics and they have improved."

Hi. I am going to close this topic for the moment and open it when the series starts. This will save a lot of confusion because Australia is already in the middle of a series.

Sri Lanka 'ready' for Australians

Bayliss (left) and Jayawardene meet the Australian press in Adelaide

Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene says his side are full of confidence ahead of the Test series in Australia.

Jayawardene's side arrived down under on Wednesday ahead of a two-Test series and he insists they have the bowlers to test the world's number one outfit.

Off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan will complement a four-strong seam attack and Jayawardene said: "We have proved we can handle pace and bounce."

Coach Trevor Bayliss added: "Our pace bowling attack is extremely strong."

The Sri Lankans kick off their tour with a warm-up three-day match against Queensland on 2 November, before Tests from 8 November and 16 November.

The tour precedes their home series against England and Jayawardene believes his side can stand up to the task against Australia, who have not lost a home series since 1993 against the West Indies.

Australia will also be without recently retired paceman Glenn McGrath and spin legend Shane Warne.

"I think with Glenn and Shane not being there, they probably lack a bit of experience in their bowling attack, that is an area we can look forward to," said Jayawardene.

"But Australia have still got a very good side. We have to challenge them in bowling, batting, fielding and mentally be very tough under different conditions.

"It's not just one area, but if you are to beat Australia in Australia, you have to play your best game possible."

Conditions in Australia have historically been tough for Sri Lanka, with Muralitharan in particular taunted by home crowds on previous tours.

But Bayliss hoped the majority of people would respect his side, saying: "There's always idiots in every crowd, but most realise it's wrong and don't get involved."

Hamstring strain puts Sri Lankan vice-captain in doubt

Sangakkara in doubt for first Test

Kumar Sangakkara strained his hamstring while batting during the tour game in Adelaide Getty Images

Kumar Sangakkara, the Sri Lankan vice-captain, is a doubtful starter for the first Test against Australia in Brisbane after scans revealed a grade one tear in his left hamstring. The injury was sustained on Saturday during the team's first warm-up match in Adelaide.

Sangakkara told Cricinfo that he remained optimistic of his chances of making the Test, which begins in Brisbane on November 8, although he will miss the second and final warm-up match against Queensland on Friday.

"I would say it's definitely a grade one tear," he said in Adelaide on Tuesday prior to flying to Queensland. "But we will have to see when the MRIs are assessed. Realistically, I'm just trying to make sure I do everything right with my treatment and make sure I get ready for the Test." His coach Trevor Bayliss added that he was "not hopeful" that he would make the first Test.

Sangakkara had only made one run in the first innings against the Chairman's XI before sustaining the injury. He had wanted to bat on with a runner, but the physiotherapist Tommy Simsek called him off the pitch. "He was quite right in taking me off as I could have made the injury bigger had I stayed on," Sangakkara said. He was rested as a precaution at first, but the pain began to worsen.

A grade one is the least serious type of tear, but he still needs daily treatment from the physio. He has since been testing his leg out in the gym and on the bike and says that he is already feeling better. "I'm not in any major pain, it's just discomfort."

The absence of Sri Lanka's vice-captain would be a big blow to the tourists who are aiming for their first Test win on Australian soil during the two-Test series.

Mahela Jayawardene, the captain, said: "He's been a vital component obviously but if he's not fit the other guys have to step up to the plate. We would love to have Kumar there but if he's not going to be there the other guys have to step up to the responsibility."

Prasanna Jayawardene will take the gloves in the second tour match. He deputised well for Sangakkara during the first warm-up in Adelaide this week, with a host of catches, but has not yet batted on tour. He has impressed before, when Sangakkara played as a specialist batsman in the three-Test series against Bangladesh in July, and he scored his first maiden Test century, too.

Chanaka Welegedara was injured in the same match, straining his right quadriceps, while Sanath Jayasuriya picked up a cold. Sujeewa de Silva is expected to fly in to cover for Welegedara, his fellow fast bowler, and could be launched straight into the side on Friday. He has been playing for the A side in Zimbabwe.
