@tia.o from Mahabharath times that is written 5000 years ago only the Queen's children got heir rights. That has nothing to do with British. British imposed some rules on Indian Kingdom for their benefit. But our rule itself was very clear on those aspects. Leave Mahabharath, even in Ramayan it is like that.
That's why Kaikeyi had to send Ram to jungle by extracting the 2 promises given to her by Dashrath to make her son Bharath the king
And Satyavati's father asked Bhishma whether can forgo the throne. Even when he said he can forgo, Satyavati's father asked whether his children will do, forcing him to take celibacy for life time so that the throne went to Satyavati's children.
And BRM somehow wants to stop the heirline. She might have tried it during RM time itself. But it didn't happen. She might have been responsible for the death of real Sulakshana also.
And she was thinking RNJ will never warm upto Gayatri because he was so lost in Sula. The moment she knew RNJ warming up to Gayatri she bought her master stroke. And then started playing on his emotions.
Gayatri didn't marry a married man. But the situations has made her a second wife with neither she nor RNJ not even RM intended. Because Sula was dead to everyone.
So when she ended up a second wife, she herself knows kings have second wife( There is a dialogue from her) but she is unable to accept, which is fair on her side as she is having emotional conflict. BRM is rubbing on her wounds again and again.
BRM has an emotional hold on RNJ, a very strong emotional hold reason being RM is not very much emotionally open. And that hold has to go. And it is not that easy.
