Shah Rukh Khan, Actor, Producer
At 41, Shah Rukh Khan has managed to capture the collective Indian imagination like few other Bollywood stars have. With a fan following that runs into millions and a series of films that speak of tremendous talent and intense hard work, SRK or King Khan, as he is popularly known, rules the Indian film industry. His international recognition and fan following is commendable.
Shah Rukh Khan won his first award in 1992, the Filmfare Award for Sensational Debut for his performance in the film Deewana. To date he has won 13 Filmfare Awards including the Filmfare Power Award which he shared with veteran Superstar Amitabh Bachchan in 2004. Shah Rukh Khan has also been honoured with more than 30 Awards instituted by media and corporate houses such as the Screen Awards, the Zee Cine Awards, the Sansui Viewers Choice awards. His peers in the film industry have also recognized Shah Rukh Khan with awards bestowed by the organizations such as the IIFA, AGFA, and AIFA.
Three National Honours including Best Indian Citizen award in 1997, Rajiv Gandhi award for Excellence in 2002 and Padma Shri in 2005 have been awarded to SRK .
A successful film company, with a state of the art VFX division and an AD film making company to his credit SRK has established himself as a successful entrepreneur endeavoring to give back to the film industry, he has received so much from. SRK has a perfume named after him and most importantly, the adoration of a discerning public-the recognition that has come Shah Rukh's way in a decade-long tenure is resultant of his undying quest for excellence and an untiring spirit.
Shah Rukh's heartfelt performance in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's magnum opus 'Devdas' not only won him accolades in India, but also went a long way in making it the Indian entry for the 75th Academy Awards. The film was also screened at the international Cannes film festival. Similarly, his home production 'Paheli' was India's official entry in the 2006 Oscars.
Shah Rukh visited Edinburgh to participate in the Master Class Event, making him the first Indian man to receive this honour. This recognition as a cultural ambassador of India to the rest of the world has come to Shah Rukh in the face of pure performance and unfailing integrity. SRK wax figure was unveiled at the prestigious Madamme Tussauds museum in April 2007 and another wax figure is due to be unveiled at The Grevin wax museum in Paris in early 2008. Spurred on by the resounding success of his efforts, he continues to star in some of the biggest blockbusters of our time.
Shah Rukh Khan has also been instrumental in funding several charitable causes. Apart form regular donations to organizations and individuals (especially in case of AIDs and cancer patients) , he was responsible for the creation of a children's ward at the Nanavati Hospital in Mumbai, in loving memory of his beloved mother Late Mrs. Lateef Fatima. The Prime Ministers Tsunami Relief Fund in 2005 received a sum of Rs 25 lakh from the actor.
Voted one of the ten sexiest men in Asia and the Asian Hero by Time Magazine, Shah Rukh is married to childhood sweetheart Gauri and is father to two children. He was born, brought up and educated in New Delhi but now stays in Mumbai - a city that tries to literally mirror his energy.
