Days after conducting air strikes against Islamist militia in Syria, Moscow has expanded the theater of conflict to India as well by targeting theaters screening the recently released Shahid Kapoor-Alia Bhatt starrer, Shaandaar. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that his government had to take suo moto action after Russian intelligence agencies reported disturbing chatter on the social media related to an entity called Shaandaar' late Friday evening.
"This movie is a newly emerging crisis that threatens to derail global peace and security. It is an assault on people's IQs, leaving them in a numbed state of mind. The makers had a sense of humor in naming it Shaandaar', I grant them that. Security experts are calling it cinematic terrorism. So Moscow, as the new superpower, had to act," Mr Lavrov said at a hurriedly convened press conference.
Citing news reports that heavily criticized the Western powers over their delayed and rather inadequate response to the Syrian crisis, the Russian Foreign Minister said, "This time we want to be pro-active and nip the emerging threat in the bud. We can't wait for Washington to get its act together. India is our good friend so what troubles India also troubles Russia."
"I concede we missed out on previous occasions," Mr Lavrov added. "We failed to act on Himmatwala, we failed to follow up on Humshakal, Action Jackson and Roy. But this time we want to make up for it. We will stand by our friends in their time of need. We will destroy these theatres- the root cause of the problem - and bring peace to the hearts and minds of people. The Russian Federation will do all that is in its power to tackle terrorism in all forms."
On being questioned as to why air strikes didn't commence over the weekend itself, given the clear signals of the emerging threat, Mr Lavrov replied, "We were waiting for Mr Kejriwal's review."
