This is a late post...but I'm behind on my videos so you have to pardon the late notice...but I found it completely odd that in October 1st's Episode they said that learning English and being educated are about the same...

Vidya says that they questioned her because she didn't speak english like them and therefore was uneducated. Then she goes on to say that even having learned English she values her mother tongue.

I realize it was the easiest way to show she as educated, by getting her to learn english...but before he knew that Vidya was uneducated Saagar knew that Vidya didn't speak English but he didn't consider her uneducated.

Do you think that since English has become such a staple language education means being able to speak and read and write in English?

Or does being educated matter on what exactly is learned?

Vidya from childhood has learned, good values, and how to behave? She has more sense of what is right and wrong. Moreso than Saagar. Does that mean she's more educated in that sense than Saagar?

How do you define being educated? Is it being able to read and write? Is it able to speak in English? Or is it something else?

Please do humor me...

Interesting thought. I think they decided to make V speak in english because it was just the easier way to show that she is educated. Maybe if she had written something in hindi, it would not have had the same dramatic affect. Plus english, unfortunately has become the mother tongue for a lot of people in India. Its automatically assumed that if you can speak english, you are educated.

Good education comes from the brain, Good values come from the heart. V always had been educated in the moralistic sense, educating herself (in the literal way) was a way to enforce that to the world...I guess.

It wasn't that she was uneducated but rather that she was illiterate. She couldn't read and write. I guess being educated in a sense is different from being illiterate.

The best way to show that she can now read and write was to make her speak in english. I mean she already knew how to speak in hindi so it would not have been as dramatic and shocking as it was when she spoke the line in english.

I also don't think that they were trying to show that English is a must for everyone. I think Sagar just wanted her to be able to read and write and yes most of the problems she has faced in the show is because of the papers which are printed in english... so therefore it was kind of necessary to show her speaking english.

In ancient times people knew how to read and write and speak in sanskrit. They did not know english but were still considered highly educated. Vidya was educated in the sense that she had her morals and values intact. She could distinguish between right or wrong. She was, however, illiterate and that was the point they were trying to reinforce over and over again.
