As we head into the last quarter of 2015, we take a poll on the movies that are likely to hit the box-office jackpot
We are in the last quarter of the calendar year, a time when producers bring out the big hitters while aiming for the box-office jackpot. The pot is further sweetened by the fact that this is the festive season, when cine-goers, especially families, are happy to spend good money on the movie-going experience. The main attractions are therefore reserved for Diwali and Christmas. So, what does the last quarter of 2015 have in store for the trade?
Looking back at the year that was, we saw an interesting mix of content. October kicked off with Akshay Kumar teaming up with Prabhudheva again, in Singh Is Bliing; Meghana Gulzar's Talvar, which featured Irrfan and Konkana Sen Sharma; Sridevi-starrer dubbed Puli; and Sanjay Gupta's Jazbaa, which released yesterday featuring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Irrfan. The next few weeks of the month will see Luv Ranjan's Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2, Vikas Bahl's Shaandaar featuring Shahid Kapoor and Alia Bhatt; Randeep Hooda and Richa Chadda-starrer Main Aur Charles; and Kanu Behl's Titli.
Come November and Sooraj Barjatiya's Prem Ratan Dhan Payo will see Salman Khan returning to the silver screen as Prem, and Imtiaz Ali's Tamasha featuring Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone.
December will see Amitabh Bachchan and Farhan Akhtar in Wazir, Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon-starrer Dilwale directed by Rohit Shetty, and Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Bajirao Mastani featuring Ranveer Singh, Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone.
As we head into the last and potentially most lucrative quarter of 2015, we took a poll on films that will set the box office on fire. Here's what the trade had to say.
Subhash Ghai, Director
I see Prem Ratan Dhan Payo as the biggest money-spinner of the year. Audiences are eagerly waiting for Sooraj Barjatya and Salman Khan to come back together with this film, which is a family film releasing on a festival. We rarely see films like this being made on the big screen nowadays and is a welcome change for both the audience as well as the industry. Who knows, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo would even start a trend. On the other hand, we have Bajirao Mastani, a love story being told Sanjay Leela Bhansali-style. These two films will do huge business at the ticket counter.
Pradeep Sarkar, Director
This has been a very good year. Even blockbuster films like Bajrangi Bhaijaan were high on content. The time has come when everyone, from directors to actors, is looking for a good story to be told. So whether small or big films, a good film is what works at the box office. And the last quarter is that time of the year when all the biggies are lined up. Naturally, expectations are huge from Salman Khan's Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, which releases during Diwali. There's Shaandaar, which looks fresh and young, then Shah Rukh Khan's Dilwale, and finally Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Bajirao Mastani to look forward too.
Umesh Shukla, Director
The last quarter looks very interesting with some big films lined up. The quarter started with Talvar and Singh Is Bliing, we will have Shaandaar, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, Wazir, Tamasha, Bajirao Mastani and Dilwale to look forward to. Each film has a different flavor, so let's hope the quarter adds a lot to the box office.
Remo D'Souza,Director
This year has been good so far and the last quarter also looks interesting. We have Prem Ratan Dhan Payo as the Diwali release and not one but two films, Bajirao Mastani and Dilwale, for Christmas. These films will definitely bring in big money to the box office. There are also three potential surprise packages, Shaandaar, Tamasha and Wazir, which will be high on content.
Sajid Khan,Director
The last quarter looks interesting and hopefully the remaining big films in October, November and December should collectively gross over '1,000 crore, in genuine and not bumped-up figures. I am looking forward to all the films.
Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan, Director
I am really looking forward to Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Bajirao Mastani. The trailer of the films looks very grand and even the lead actors, Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh, are looking amazing. I think their chemistry will be scintillating on the screen. There was a time when filmmakers like K Asif and Sohrab Modi took Indian cinema to greater heights with their films.
I see a similar thing happening through Bajirao Mastani. I think it will be a historical treat for the Indian audience, wrapped in the perfect ingredients of romance and drama.
I am also quite keen to watch Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. Although I am not a big fan of idealistic family dramas, this one is an exception. Not to forget, Rajshri Films has a huge and very loyal fan following and that could translate into enormous box-office success. Salman Khan's return as Rajshri's Prem is one more thing to look forward to.
Devika Shroff Nihalani,Founder, Spot On Film Marketing
The last quarter of the year historically is one packed with big releases on festivals and holidays. Dusshera, Diwali and pre-Christmas are attractive dates for film outings. During this time, I am looking forward to Hollywood and independent films outshining others and being discoveries of the season. The films I'm looking forward to are Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, Spectre and Tamasha.
Manoj Desai,Executive Director, Maratha Mandir and G7 Multiplex
It's that time of the year when all the big films are lined up for release. This year, Diwali will be brighter as Sooraj Barjatya is returning with Salman Khan, so Prem Ratan Dhan Payo is an out-and-out family film. Then we have Dilwale and Bajirao Mastani, which will be releasing during Christmas and will break records at the box office. Then there's Amitabh Bachchan and Farhan Akhtar's Wazir, and Ranbir Kapoor-Deepika Padukone's Tamasha.
Devang Sampat, Business Head/Strategic Initiatives, Cinepolis
Like every year, this quarter also promises to be the biggest of the year. We have a good mix of Bollywood, Hollywood and regional content. Diwali looks bigger with Salman Khan and Sooraj Barjatya's Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, a perfect family entertainer for Diwali. This is followed by Bond and Christmas is like never before. Two biggies, Dilwale and Bajirao Mastani, will break all records. In between, we will also have great opening with multiplex movies like Talvar and Shaandaar.
Murli Chhatwani, Managing Director, Muviwale Entertainment
The big-ticket films are Prem Ratan Dhan Payo and Dilwale, and as far as mini-budget films are concerned, Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2 will be a winner. Shaandaar looks impressive too as the film has already created a huge buzz. Tamasha is looking strong too, due to Imtiaz Ali, Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone. Bajirao Mastani is another film that looks good.
