I dont conclude what is sudha??From kailash's perspective she is cheating on him .She is married to him and would be mother of his child but still love other man.She is cold towards him .She surrender her body but her heart still beat for chander . If we saw whole thing from Sudha's perspective she looked like victim of circumstances. She loved chander but married to kailash.Chander and her father asked her to get marry and she did so for saving reputation of her father but no one asked her will. What will keep her happy??Her father always gave her all possible luxury but snatch reason of happiness. Some other question also arrives in my mind?? Why Sudha doesnt ask for some time?? Why Sudha doesnt talk to her father?? Why she accepted everything gave to her without her will??? Why she dont move on??? What is Sudha a cheating wife or failed lover who dont united with her lover or sacrificing lady???

I'm not sure if Sudha can be faulted for not 'loving' Kailash in that way. Hers was an arranged marriage and that too fixed by just looking at the photo. Sudha and Kailash never interacted with each other before marriage. And in these situations, only after marriage, do people try to know and love the other. And since we haven't been shown much about Sudha and Kailash after their marriage, I can't say if Sudha has in way done injustice to Kailash. At the end of the day, love is an emotion; Sudha cannot just switch on immense love for Kailash or switch off the immense care and concern she has for Chander.

Now coming to Sudha loving Chander... from whatever was shown, it seemed more like Sudha didn't know that she loves Chander. She even once questions Chander about what is love. The thing is Sudha and Chander had known each for so long and were friendly with each other and had much love and affection for each other but they never considered each other as lovers; they never considered it as that type of love. Its no wonder Chander says to Pammi 'that even my diary knew what I didn't.'

The thing is Sudha didn't want to marry Kailash or anyone. Even at time she never recognized her love per se or intended to marry Chander. No. She instead never wanted to marry anyone. Because marrying means having to leave her home and more importantly, leaving Chander and the kind of bond they shared. So why did Sudha agree for this marriage? Because Chander wanted it; he made her promise to do what he asks for. And she values Chander too much to break this promise. I agree it's difficult to relate to Sudha agreeing for marriage for Chander's sake and it just seems foolish to me. But then that is Sudha; that is her love. A love that she never really recognized or acknowledged; a love that was never really defined and yet she took such a big life-changing decision based only on what Chander wanted.

@yuri I would call Sudha a woman who was not able to stand up for herself when she had to. She is the representative of most women out there who put the cause of misery on the circumstances and men out there.
She wanted to be the perfect daughter, perfect lover and of course a perfect wife too. But in the end she became none to be frank.
She had it with her to change the destiny of 3 men. Her father, her lover and of course her present husband, if she had the courage to deny Chander's request, go to her father and tell she doesnt want this marriage.
She had every right to question her father on what basis he decided to fix her relation with someone without discussing with her. She need not even speak about her love, but she can simply reject Kailash's proposal telling she doesnt like him. She had that right.
But Sudha doesnt exert that right. To keep her image as the girl who listens to everything Chander says she gives unwilling consent. If you look after that every time she taunts him indirectly for putting her in the mess. After marriage she is not close enough to her husband, write letter telling her problems to Chander, create hungama at home when he refuses to take food from her.
In every way she builds guilt into Chander which sends Chander in the arms of Pammi who uses him in another way allowing him to destroy himself.
Sudha by her indirect rebellion is not only harming herself, but also Chander and Kailash.
I will conclude my post asking just imagine what would have happened to Yudhister and Pandavas if Panchali had abided by Yudhi's decision to be a slave in the infamous hall of dice. Even if Lord Krishna had wanted he wouldn't have been able to save them from their fate of being slaves to Kauravas. It's her rave and rant in the infamous hall of dice and finally when she gets no help from anyone including her husbands, it is she who calls God to come and help her because she accepted what is happening to her is injustice. Many call her as the woman who brought the destruction of Kuruvansh, but I treat her as the woman who changed her husband's destiny from a definite slave to the king of the land, even if it meant taking the blame on herself.
A woman holds the power to change the destiny of a man from good to bad or from bad to good. But for the better change some courage is required, which unfortunately women like Sudha lack. They cant take blame on themselves for anything.

Thanks for replying and giving very good point to understand Sudha.
I completely agree with you that relating with Sudha is very difficult .She just put her whole life on stake just because chander wants it but she was in 1940 so scenerio of that time was different from current one but one thing is same love is a emotion which cant switch that easily and in that era move on thing would be more difficult.

Sudha was good ,share great bonding with chander but if she speak on time, life would be different for everyone. It wont be that troublesome. If sudha take a stand kailash and that unborn baby might not suffered .Prof.shukla too realised very late that caste doesnt matter but what cause him to change of heart all of sudden.A woman can make or break sudha is perfect example of this.

@yuri for professor Shukla he sees the slow degradation of his favourite student post Sudha's marriage. Look at Chander's condition and seeing his daughter he feels she is not that happy.
They doesn't tell him anything, but their condition make him realize what he has done is a grave mistake.
Indirectly he gave pain to his daughter and also the cause of a brilliant young man wasting away his talent. Just because he couldn't see beyond the caste.
Sudha indeed was a good girl but then she was also dependant. Far too dependant on Chander. I am not sure what kind of a wife Sudha would have been even if she married Chander, because when you are wife, you have to take many independent decisions as situations demands to run the family smoothly.
But somewhere Sudha lacked this skill is my take and even post marriage she was unwilling to grow up and take the challenge head on. It was as if she doesn't have in her to live such a tough life

@shrutiravi Dependency is common in that era.Women first dependent to father before marriage ,after marriage dependent to husband and than son in later years of life .Independent women came very later in Indian society so that skill is avidable but Sudha's unwillingness to grow up might trouble but might be sudha matured with time as chander stay at her side. This tale teaches Every mistake has a price and when you commit a mistake you have to be ready to pay its price.Life doesnt forgive easily

sudha was very complex. she was trying to become n ideal woman. a woman that chander wanted her to be picture perfect. her heart was never ready to accept her marriage n i feel if it was only his father she would av refused. bt it was chander who asked her to get married. she could never refuse chander.
so sumtyms i do feel bad for her bt if we see both the sides on coin sudha was definitely at fault.
excess of anything is always bad. n sudha was obsessed with chander. her luv for chander was jst too much. so i feel sudha was an unintentional cheater. she had no control over her heart. bt wat she did wid herself n kailash was wrong.
