Abhishek Prem Mehra was a top cardiologist in prestigious hospital today. He had plans of starting his own practice in coming year. He had finally established himself in a new city and as an interventionist. He had affected so many lives in such a short time. It was amazing how smooth his transition became since the day he first laid eyes on her.
She had been conveniently seated where he could snag a seat next to her. He saw her immediately brighten. He didn't know if it was she figured he was desi so she had an ally in this strange, complex world of balancing professionalism with culture, or was it because she was attracted to him? He had noticed women fawning over him since he had arrived here. However, he knew he was here to work and learn the ropes.
She muttered something about the crazy patient they were both tasked to handle. He had said how that patient was her best friend.
" She loves to bother me. I am having such a crazy day because of her," she muttered.
" I bet you are having fun now," he joked back at her.
She suddenly got distracted and had to walk away.
He had felt a tinge of disappointment back then but things had gradually progressed from there.
Abhi arrived home and was surprised to find the apartment dark. He glanced at his watch. It was 8:30pm. Maybe she was running late. He had actually made it back at a decent time and she probably got stuck.
He sighed and checked his phone. No message. Maybe she had gone out with the girls after her shift.
No she would have texted him.
Maybe the battery was dead.
He scrolled up and looked at the previous messages.
He smiled at the one from 2:30pm.
"Finally took a break!" "I have food in the fridge."
Abhi sighed. He had a light mini meal before at a conference before. He wanted a quiet night in with her today so he had skimmed off on eating much.
He decided he would wait for her. He lay down on the couch and soon dozed off before he realized.
Thirty minutes later he awakened and realized he was still alone.
He searched for his phone and realized it was dead.
He plugged it in and went off to freshen up.
He was about to grab the food out of the fridge when he heard it go off.
Seeing the hospital calling, he was flustered because for once he wasn't on call. He wanted to spend it with her whenever she finally got home.
He answered gruffly.
"Hello how can I help you?," he grumbled.
"Dr. Mehra, you need to come in right away," the harried woman stammered on the phone.
"Look there are other cardiologists are duty tonight. Who is the patient by the way?," he asked frustrated.
"Sir actually it's something else," she stated.
"Come on I don't have time for nonsense," he declared.
" Sir there was an incident over on 3 south about change of shift..," she started to say.
Abhi froze.
He nearly dropped the phone.
"What the status? I will be right there," he stammered before she could answer.
He rushed into the Emergency Department like his life depended on it. Also realizing he had to maintain decorum he headed off to the nurse's station to see if he could spot that his eyes yearned to see.
Then he heard a voice seemed weary and unlike her usual self.
She wasn't wearing her glasses. Her cheek was swollen below her eye. She was pale otherwise. Her friend turned to flash him a smile before leaving them alone.
She gazed at him wearily and tried to smile but her head felt heavy and she nearly fell backwards.
He reached over and helped her lay down.
" I need to stay up high. I might have a concussion they are saying," she muttered.
"Have they taken you to CAT scan yet?," he asked.
She tried to shake her head in negative but felt dizzy and nauseated.
"There are some people ahead of me," she muttered.
"Head injuries are priority. I am going to make some calls," he declared.
She grabbed his hand.
"No Abhi, relax. Were you already home? I hope you ate something. I may have to spend the night," she rasped.
He pulled up a chair and stroked her hair.
"Are you going to tell me later what happened or do I have to go badger your friends and bribe them with chocolate?," he demanded.
She smiled slightly.
" A patient got out of hand and was trying to elope," she muttered.
He glared at her.
"How many times do I have to tell you not to be superwoman? Next time let security handle this!," he declared.
She pouted.
"Security was looking outside for him," she muttered.
" Promise me Pragya, no more. Nursing is what you should stick to, not herogiri," he admonished.
"Theek hai Dr. Mehra. As you say," she replied.
She grew drowsy, but he yelled her name.
She opened her eyes immediately.
" I was just resting my eyes," she said innocently.
" Don't try to act smart with me. No sleeping for you tonight," he declared.
"Wish we could be cuddled up and watch a rom-com instead of being stuck here," she muttered.
" I would rather do that now than see you here like this. I am going to go see about the CAT scan. I'll just be back. Don't sleep," he hissed.
She smiled and indicated she would listen to him.
