Fauji, Circus, Wagle Ki Duniya - tracing Shah Rukh Khan's small steps on his journey to be King Khan!

Going back into time to learn about King Khan's humble beginnings!

Shah Rukh Khan is a superstar...He is a Bollywood legend...he is also one of the most influential people in the industry. Apart from being a very popular actor, he also heads a production house, with a state of the arts VFX studio, is a co-owner of the IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders, does a lot of charities etc. etc.

...with Dilwale, Fan, Raees releasing the coming months, King Khan is busy as ever. The man has got bouquets for his charming performances in Darr, Baazigar, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Swades and Chak De India, as well as as brickbats for repeating' himself in almost every film. Love him or Hat him, you just can't ignore the crazy following he has which keeps on increasing with every passing moment.

Above all, his road to superstardom is a motivation tale in itself. In an industry accused of being submerged in nepotism, it's superstars like Shah Rukh Khan and Akshay Kumar, who proves that even outsiders can make a huge mark in Bollywood!

As you know, SRK had started first in the television industry. He came into public consciousness with his role in Fauji, before he became a part of Umeed, Doosra Kewal and others. It was these roles which made people love and accept this young man with floppy hair and dimpled smile!

So to inspire all the strugglers wanting to fit into Bollywood, let's look at the small steps SRK has taken before joined Bollywood!

Fauji

Srk-Fauji

Little did they know when the first episode of Fauji was aired, that a star...no...wait for it...a superstar was born! SRK played Lt. Abhimanyu Rai, part of the Indian regiment under training whom the show follows. Though he was one of the leads, it was SRK and his impish charm that made the maximum impact among the star-cast!

You can watch a scene from the serial here...

Dil Dariya/Doosra Keval

Shah Rukh Khan was also a part of two Lekh Tandon serials, Dil Dariya and Doora Keval. Dil Dariya was about a Sikh and a Hindu family, and the tensions that brew between them, when the strife begins to rise in Punjab. Doosra Keval is about a young girl's search for truth behind the death of her brother (played by Shah Rukh Khan), who had migrated to the city for further studies. Shah Rukh Khan and Lekh Tandon later shared screen in Swades.

I couldn't find any episode online, so if you find any links...please share in the comment section below...

Umeed

ShahrukhUmeed

This was Shah Rukh Khan's second serial after Fauji. Though he played a small part, the rural based serial also had Deepti Naval and Joy Mukherjee.

In which Annie gives it to those ones

inwhichanniegives

This made for television film by Arundhati Roy, in which she also played the lead, is based on architecture students. Shah Rukh Khan appeared in a couple of scenes as an unnamed senior student, while mouthing English dialogues!

Wagle Ki Duniya

SRk-Wagle-ki-duniya

Shah Rukh Khan also played a cameo in this cult classic comedy about the middle class Wagle (played by Anjan Shrivastav) and his struggles to keep his family running. The show was based on the characters created by the prominent cartoonist, late RK Laxman. Shah Rukh Khan had appeared in 11 episodes in the serial.

Circus

srk-still-serial-circus

Circus was the serial that became the first collaboration between Shah Rukh Khan and Aziz Mirza, which later seeped into films like Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, Yes Boss, Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustaniand Chalte Chalte. Playing the main lead, SRK becomes the reluctant owner of a circus camp, who wants to sell it off at the first given chance, but later changes his mind, when he becomes the part of its daily struggle. Even Ashutosh Gowariker and Renuka Shahane were part of the show.

Ahaha...brings back such old memories!
Have been his fan since Fauji, knew the boy had something special in him! 😳 Didnt like Circus so much, he was too jumpy in that one but in Fauji, where he did Tom Cruise's role (Top Gun inspired) was too good! A Star was born indeed! ⭐️
Even remember In which Annie gives it those ones...that experimental college movie shot with handheld videocam...but dont remember SRK in it. 😆
SRK does look very good in glasses, like the character of Ajay in Baazigar. He shd wear glasses more often in his movies, like in Raees poster hes looking so impressive in glasses!

I had not watched any of his serials when I saw him in movies. Later some of my friends said, they had seen him in some serial and he was good. What I mean to say is, he was not a TV 'star', when he entered Bollywood. This struck me recently, when someone was asking why certain TV star did not make it big in Bollywood. Both Sharukh or Vidya were not stars in TV. Star in Hum Paanch was not Vidya. Even then, the big stars in TV did not shine in Bollywood (like Nitish Bharadvaj who acted in Mahabharat got a chance with Madhuri. But he could not overcome his image).

Sharukh was not a popular TV star. So he did not have a image hangover. He was lucky, his character was not noticed by large mass, instead by a film maker (Hema Malini).

Disagree!! Fauji was a rage back then...i never knew his real name just abhimanyu Rai..until I read his interview in stardust hindi...the title was "Shahrukh ka ghamand kab tootega???"😆
Fauji was so popular that even his sidekick's punchline "i say chaps " became famous
