Hi everyone

Many of you have asked for details about the personal life of the Rajput warrior Maharana Pratap, seeking reliable information about his wives and children. This article is a culmination of my research into these aspects of the Maharana's life and aims to provide insightful details about his family.

At the end of this post, a video has been uploaded which shows the wealth of information that may be obtained by a visit to the City Museum of Udaipur. Some points - worth thinking, have also been included at the end of the post, about availability of Rajput records.

I am sure you will find this post useful. I have included interesting details and anecdotes also, along with several scans from Mewar records.

Also given the address of those museums and libraries in Rajasthan where you can obtain this information, in case you want to pursue this topic in more depth.

Whoa! Thanks so much for this fantastic post.
What depth and details and references you have gone into. I could see in my limited view the extent of effort behind this. Just amazing!
You are rocking more and more with each of your posts.

Regd the post, I would agree about the discrepancies. With so many wives and so many children I would not be surprised if even he was confused;-) but given that he is Maharana he will obviously not be.

It is so heartening and also amazing to know that not one of his many sons went into Mughal service. Their svabhimaan whhch rubs in their blood and lack of rivalry betn siblings could be well seen. Most importantly, the immense regard for their father. They would never do anything to bring dishonour to their great father, they would always tread his path.

Btw, curious if Maharana took promise from all sons or only Amar Singh? As I understand its the latter and hence all the more amazing.

Imagine the guts and conviction one should have when all around you are nothing but surrendered lands to Mughal. And all of them exhibited this spirit. It's amazing and amazing and only amazing for me.

Amazing effort to trace and compile such rare information from so many untranslated Rajput records! Fantastic job!! 👏

I am struck by the tendency of erstwhile kings to keep marrying into various royal families of other kingdoms in order to maintain cordial relations with them. Polygamy was as much a feature of Hindu royalty as it was of Muslim royalty.

(I would love to read about how Rajput royal women adjusted to a polygamous setup and if they had any position of authority at all or were mere props, albeit beautiful ones, in the palace. )

If MP had 11 wives and he married 10 of them after he married Ajabde, he queen closest to MP, then it's easier to accept that Akbar had a huge harem and could still marry for political reasons, after his marriage with Heer Kanwar.

At least, MP didn't have any concubines!

From the list of wives, it appears that MP tried to forge close ties with most Rajputana states.

Coming to MP's children:

I cannot believe that MP didn't have a single daughter! It's possible of course, but still seems implausible.

17 sons out of whom only Amar Singh is widely known. Any significant reason why the other sons are not equally able and known?

I am not surprised by the discrepancies in the different records. It is only to be expected when these records were not written with the cooperation of the Mewar royals.

Thanks for sharing the link to the video. It is very enlightening. I was surprised to see the quality of the paintings adorning the walls. I also wish the government as well as rich patrons of art / history would contribute generously towards maintaining this museum, which houses some of the rarest records and historic artefacts.

Kaana,
Being the next ruler, the promise was taken from Amar Singh.

Rest all points i agree.
BTW, There is no confusion in official Mewar records about the wives/sons. :)

Yes it took lot of time to make this post. ;p
Thanks for posting. :)

Thanks for sharing this amazing info abhay. This is really informative. BTW, i have a question, did ajab actually die early because it seems that her character would end soon in the show. Was she there during haldighati or not?
