~ CHAPTER SIXTY ~
Manik took his own sweet time to cut out another piece whilst Nandini and the rest of the gang watched him curiously. She couldn't make out what was going on in his twisted mind but she was sure that he was definitely up to another one of his evil schemes. She cringed a bit as he straightened up and moved towards her with a fresh piece of cake in his hand. As he got closer and shot his eyes up at her, she realized what he could be up to. And as if to confirm her doubts, his eyes mischievously narrowed into thin slits and the corner of his mouth curled up into a devious smirk.
Nandini's curious ogle instantly dissolved into a serious, intimidating glare. She stumbled momentarily whilst taking a couple of cautious steps back. "No," she mumbled and pointed her finger at Manik in warning.
Amused, Cabir rolled up his sleeves and prepared for action. "Alright!" he exclaimed as he wrung his hands vigorously. "Now this is going to be fun!"
Manik closed in on Nandini whilst brandishing the cake in his hand like a deadly weapon.
"I said no!" Nandini threatened.
But Manik was undeterred. He simply flashed a naughty smirk at her. "Achchaaa?" he teased.
He took an almighty swipe at her face but she ducked in the nick of time with a sharp shriek and attempted to flee out of the room only to get pinned in place by Cabir. "You're under arrest," he announced in a typical cop's tone. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say or do can and will be used against you in a court of law."
"What the hell! Cabir!" Nandini was literally senseless as Manik closed in with the cake.
"Nowww I've gotcha," he said in a low, husky voice.
"No! Back off! Don't!" She managed to break free from Cabir's grapple and dive to a seemingly safe corner of the room. She quickly took cover behind a chair. Seeing this, Cabir bellowed with laughter like one of those villains from old Bollywood movies. Dhruv and Mukti cheered on whilst Mukherjee just stood there and smiled like a fool. Every now and then he would warn them with a "not too loud" or a "be careful!" But they were in the mood to party.
"Ohh baby," drawled Manik as he cornered Nandini. "Now you're really gone."
"No!" she spat in utter panic. "Back off! I said back off!"
Ignoring Nandini's pleas to spare her, Manik smacked the cake on to her face and liberally smeared the cream all over. "Nooo! Ammaaa!! Maaa!!!" her muffled cries could be heard whistling out of the scones of cream that was getting stuffed down her throat.
All of them laughed so hard till their bellies ached, including Manik. It was really cute to see her squealing like a piglet.
Nandini was flabbergasted. She stood there with her mouth hanging open in shock and disapproval.
As for Manik, he straightened up with a victorious smile, stood back and admired his brilliant work of art.
"Hang on," said Cabir and closed in on them. "We're yet to add a couple of finishing touches." Saying this, he pulled out a cherry and stuck it on to the mop of cream over Nandini's nose. She was absolutely speechless and defeated that she couldn't even utter a single word.
"She looks like a clown now," snickered Dhruv who had reached the heights of entertainment.
"A clown needs big, bright lips," added Mukti. "So let me paint it."
Nandini was absolutely stunned as the room bellowed with laughter once again. "Lips!!? No! Stop!!" But her protests fell on deaf ears. Mercilessly, Mukti brushed on a thick, chocolatey lips for Nandini. "Ammaaa..." she wailed.
"Who asked you to hide in this corner?" asked Mukti as she laughed her heart out. "That's why all this happened."
"You just wait," Nandini gnashed her teeth. "I'll show you!"
"Oooh! I'm so scared!" Mukti replied sarcastically.
"Whatever you're planning to show, you'd better show it to Manik," suggested Cabir to which Nandini glowered viciously at him. Cabir pretended to be alarmed at her menacing scowl, took cover behind Mukherjee and cleared his throat. "I mean... he's the one who started all this."
Nandini was silent as she shot her eyes up at Manik. She was overwhelmed with a mixed bag of emotions. She felt so good at the moment. So important and cared for that she wasn't even sure what kind of feelings she had to harbour against him. On one hand, she was so mad at this guy that she could tear him apart like a shark would do with a seal. And on the other, this lovely gesture of his had eased her up a bit and left her feeling warm in the heart. But it didn't take long for her anger to take over the reins.
And then, to add more confusion to her already whipped up thoughts, Manik batted a triumphant eye at her that left her paralyzed to the bone in utter shock. Her heart fluttered wildly in her chest as if accepting the ultimate defeat to his potentially fatal blinking. Did he just wink at me, she thought incredulously as she struggled to control her racing heart. It took her a moment to realize that her jaw had dropped open at his winking act.
Aware of the positive results, Manik smirked victoriously. As for poor Nandini, she felt so embarrassed that she quickly looked away and concentrated on wiping the dollop of cream off her face.
"Let it be there baba," said Mukti, "we'll take it off for you. Don't worry."
"Haan... hum..." She mumbled in response. It was almost as if she had received a major electrical shock. She just couldn't think straight! Though the cream covered up the crazy blush that was reddening her cheeks, she felt furious and disgusted at what had just happened. I'm not supposed to feel this way. I hate him. Yes, I do. From the bottom of my heart. And never ever am I going to fall for any of his devious schemes. What the hell! What does he think of himself? Was he trying to flirt with me? Goddammit! And how dare he mess up my face!!
She was snapped out of her thoughts at Mukherjee's presence before her. He had a beautifully wrapped present that he held before Nandini. "Happy birthday Nandini," he said with a very warm smile.
Nandini was speechless. "Sir...?" she stammered.
"Just a small gift from all of us," said Mukherjee. "Go on."
Nandini was hesitant and extremely touched at the same time. The amount of love and care that was being showered upon her was getting a bit tough to handle.
"Come on yaar," Mukti urged. "What are you looking at? Just go on and take it."
Slowly, Nandini accepts the gift with a big, bright smile. "Thank you sir," she said. "This really means a lot."
"Aha!" Cabir interrupted. "We're not done yet."
And so... one by one, they stepped forward and handed over their gifts, cards and hugs. Nandini felt so incredibly moved and embarrassed at the same time that she just couldn't stop smiling.
Finally, it was Manik's turn. The moment he stepped up to her, an air uneasiness wedged itself between the both of them. It didn't take long for Nandini's broad grin to dissolve into a barely visible smile. Disheartened at the sudden drop in her spirits, Manik puffed himself up in an attempt to look unaffected. "Umm... Ahh... Happy... birthday... Nandini," he said uncomfortably.
Nandini flashed one of her formal smiles which she had kept aside just for those big officials and replied in a totally unbiased manner. "Thank you so much."
Mukti nudged Cabir in the ribs and gestured with her eyes at Manik and Nandini. The duo had backed off by now without exchanging any hugs or smooches like the others.
"Are you thinking what I'm thinking?" asked Mukti quietly as she leaned closer towards Cabir and kept her eyes on the duo.
"How will I know what you're thinking?" snapped Cabir innocently.
Mukti gave her horse-toothed sarcastic grin whilst leaning in closer. "Cabir," she began, "you know exactly what I'm talking about. So don't act smart. I'm talking about Manik."
"Achcha? What about him?" asked Cabir curiously.
"Don't you think that he has... changed a bit?" she asked.
Cabir observed Manik for a moment who just wandered around the table aimlessly whilst Nandini settled down and began to open up the gifts on demand.
"Hmm... Even I thought so," replied Cabir as he scratched his jaw. "His height seems to have increased by an inch."
"Oof! Cabir!" Mukti was getting irritated now. "I'm not talking about the outer stuff. But the inner thing."
"The inner thing...?" Cabir whispered in deep astonishment.
Mukti glanced up at Cabir and realized that his mind had gone for one dirty ride.
"You know what Cabir," she gnashed her teeth in irritation. "Just go to hell!"
Cabir smothered up his loud, involuntary cackle that snorted out of his mouth whilst Mukti stomped away with rage and joined Dhruv.
Meanwhile, Nandini had managed to rip through a couple of presents. Her colleagues stood around to catch a glimpse of her much awaited reaction. Each and every gift and card delighted her as she progressed one after the other. First was an expensive box of imported Swiss chocolates from Mukherjee.
"These are lovely," exclaimed Nandini in delight. "I'm so damn crazy about chocolates. Thank you so much sir."
Next was a complete aroma therapy set from Mukti. Nandini allowed herself to explore a couple of fragrances that made her feel instantly relaxed. "Wow!" she said in fascination. "There are so heavenly. I've always wanted one like this. Thank you so much Mukti."
"Glad that you love it darling," replied Mukti with a wide toothy chuckle.
She opened up Cabir's package next - an exquisite and expensive digital frame with pre-set animated wallpapers such as a scenic waterfall, an aquarium scene etc.
"Like it?" asked Cabir. He was leaning against the wall with his arms crossed.
"Fabulous!" she exclaimed.
Next was one packet she simply didn't want to open. If she had a choice, she would just toss it in the trash. But how could she when she was surrounded by all her colleagues? Left with no options, she picks up the pack which felt quite heavy and began to rip through the cover.
