The family assumed he was dead for the past 5 years (supposedly he committed suicide). However, Sanskaar was very much alive but planning his revenge from DP and Lakshya. He worked hard to raise a business empire all by himself which could compete with the Maheshwari family business. This way he could destroy DP's business thus ruining his reputation. He returned after 5 years all of a sudden in the avatar of a psychologically deranged man. By having the family believe he was crazy, he could go about taking his revenge undetected. No one would be able to guess that the company Karma which was taking all the business contracts from the Maheshwaris and all the wild things which were happening to Swara were the doing of Sanskaar (since he is crazy). In the show, it has been stated that Sanskaar is the biggest businessman in the city, and owns his own house.
