NEW DELHI - A petition by Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt to commute a jail term for his connection to the 1993 Mumbai bombings has been rejected, officials said Thursday.
The 56-year-old actor was sentenced to five years in 2013 for illegally possessing weapons that were part of an arms consignment meant for use in the attack, which killed 257 people.
Maharashtra state governor C Vidyasagar Rao rejected the petition, having been advised that granting Dutt a pardon would "set a bad precedent" as his sentence was confirmed by the Supreme Court.
"Mr Dutt will serve out the sentence. His jail term will not be commuted," an official at the governor's secretariat in state capital Mumbai said over phone.
Dutt was originally arrested in 1993. The Supreme Court in 2013 upheld a 2007 conviction by an anti-terrorism court. He is due to be released by February 2016.
Former Supreme Court judge Markandey Katju argued in the unsuccessful petition that Dutt was "not a terrorist" and had suffered enough for his crime, the Times of India reported.
Dutt is a popular actor who often played gangster roles in Hindi films, and has continued to act during periods on parole.
He is currently out on 30-day parole for his daughter's nose surgery.
Dutt's frequent breaks from jail have attracted criticism amid allegations that he has been given special treatment because of his influence and popularity.
