Just caught up on the entire story in the last two days... it started out funny and then took a serious turn... I hope Arnav is punished for what he did to Khushi.
~ CHAPTER FORTY-NINE ~
It felt as though time had come to a standstill. His heart lurched dangerously in his chest and his vision almost blacked out. Along with a ton of questions, there was disbelief in her eyes. Arnav wasn't expecting a face-off so soon.
Shit... why's she looking at me like that?
His lips parted slightly as his frenzied mind debated on how to tackle this situation. If she came up with some particularly difficult questions... he needed to give her some answers. And what exactly? There was no justifying his outrageous behaviour in the stairwell. And what about before? All those times he had taunted her with his unrealistically ridiculous goals? The time he had gashed her with hurtful remarks about her parents? He just had nothing to say. But one thing was for sure... he needed to apologize. Explain himself. He knew that he had no other go. Though he had only wanted to run away from her before, careful thinking got him to figure it out. Running away only makes it worse. He had to deal with it... or else he could get into bigger trouble.
Before either of them could utter a single word, a cheerful voice from the doorway startled them. "Hello Khushi. Good to see you up. How are you doing?"
It was the doctor on his daily rounds. He was accompanied by the nurse who had checked in earlier.
Khushi gave him a baffled stare. She still had no clue as to what had happened. The last thing she could remember was her unfortunate encounter with the monster. Her confused brains managed to push up fleeting images from that particularly gruelling memory - the way Arnav had cornered and kissed her... how he had held her roughly and brushed his fingers over in an arousing way... but what happened after that? All what she could remember was that she was scared. Helpless. Powerless. Angry... Could he have... done something...? Could he have assaulted her? She strained to recollect, but her memories seemed to have been wiped away for good. There was absolutely nothing she could trace.
"What's going on?" she mumbled with a racing pulse. She was stuck in some strange place with the monster. Where the hell am I? Am I in a hospital? How did I get here? Her doubts only grew stronger. Something did happen back there. Something really bad.
"You had suffered from a seizure at your workplace," said the doctor, "but you will be perfectly back to normal in no time. So don't worry. Hmm? So tell me... how are you feeling now?"
The doctor examined her and did other routine tests as he cooked up a casual conversation. Meanwhile, Arnav stood on and watched them with the bowl still in his hands which the doctor noticed. "Did she manage to have some of that?" he asked him.
"Yeah," answered Arnav, "a little bit."
"Good-good," replied the doctor. "Let her have some more and rest. It's going to help her recover faster."
"Okay sir," nodded Arnav. His heart began to thump madly as the doctor and nurse bid adieu and left them to their own devices. He was alone in there now. With Khushi. And she was wide awake... seemingly fighting a war in her own mind. The anxiety that burnt in her eyes was disturbing. Arnav had this overwhelming sense of dread that kept eating away at him. He fumbled nervously with the spoon as he attempted to scoop up the mashed fruits from the bowl. And then... what he heard next felt like a slap to his face.
"What happened in the stairwell?" asked Khushi in a quaky voice. Though her bloodshot gaze was fixed on the wall ahead, she watched Arnav from the corner of her eyes with a growing sense of anxiety.
The discomfort in Arnav's chest was unbearable. He so badly wanted the muscles of his torso to relax at least for a little while. His airways had become so constricted that he struggled to talk. The words were hardly audible as it escaped his lips. "I... wanted to... talk to you about it. Honest... But you were..."
At this, Khushi's eyebrows clumped together at the centre. Her head was pounding so uncomfortably that the room looked quite dark.
"I didn't really... mean to do all that..." said Arnav in a barely audible voice. "And I know that... whatever I say... won't justify it..."
Khushi now turned to face Arnav with horror in her eyes. He had his gaze everywhere else but on her. Do all that...? Do all what...? What... is he saying...? Could it be...? No... Her fears and doubts kept building. The look in his eyes just made it stronger.
"But I'm... sorry... I really am..." it was so hard for him to say that. But he genuinely meant it. And Khushi could see that. This wasn't a good sign for her. It was bad.
"It just... happened..." he continued with great effort. "All what I wanted was... to... scare you... that's it... I swear... I was just angry... hurt... but I didn't mean to..."
It just happened... Now she could see the entire picture... though she could remember or feel nothing of it... I've been... raped... oh my God... I've been... ra...
Arnav paused and looked up at her as he heard an obvious gasp. She had a trembling hand clamped shut over her open mouth and there were hot tears of shock quickly flooding her eyes. Her nostrils flared as she struggled to get a grip on herself.
That was when he realized that something wasn't right. "Hang on a minute," he said abruptly. "What were you thinking?" Is she crying? But why? Does she think that... oh shit... No ways... At this realization, Arnav felt like his chest was about to burst. He was so struggling to explain himself that he never thought that the words he said could make the entire situation look like something else. On top of that, from the way she was crying, she could easily wreck her brains and suffer another massive attack. It had to stop!
"Oh shit... listen..." his eyes almost popped out of his skull and he was shaking visibly now. "I don't know what you were thinking... but... let me tell you that... it isn't anything of that sort... alright? Nothing happened. I swear. You just passed out before that." Arnav realized that his last few words made his explanation only worse because by now Khushi had buried her face in her hands. She wasn't crying that wildly but she was shocked. So much that she just wanted to remain in the comfort of her own hands forever.
"T-that doesn't mean that I would have done something if you hadn't passed out... I swear." With each word, Arnav felt more and more stupid. Shit... I'm so screwed. She has to stop or... "Listen... just relax. Stop. Please. The doctor said so. You'll fall sick. Please try to understand."
But she didn't want to come out of the darkness of her hands. She couldn't. After four years of being seizure-free, she had suffered another one. Because of Arnav. And he possibly took advantage of it. She felt so alone and helpless. How can this happen? It shouldn't have... It couldn't have...
Arnav felt like he could pass out any moment. The stress was unmanageable. What if Cabir and Mukti turns up now? Shit!! I'll never live this down! They'll think that I did something stupid!!! "Listen Khushi..." he was dead desperate now. "Please just stop... stop alright? Come on..."
"Shit..." He took a deep breath and staggered back as he wiped his brow in frustration. This wasn't working at all. That's when his eyes fell on the toffees that Cabir had given him early in the morning. What if...?
He didn't think twice. He scooped up a couple of them in his hands, approached Khushi and gently tapped her on the shoulder. "Hey see listen... just look here..."
Nope. Nothing doing. She didn't even want to see him.
"At least look up for a second," he pleaded desperately in vain and managed to tug one of her hands off her drenched face. "See look... Look what I've got..."
Through her blurred vision, she spotted the sweet smelling toffees in his hand and wondered what was so special about it.
"You're a... good girl... right?" he asked like the little girl's convincing mother who had tried to get her to patch up with her little boyfriend back in the corridor. "And good girls don't cry, right? Or fight..."
Khushi looked up at him, bewilderment plastered all over her face. She had no clue what to feel or think... but the way he talked to her... was as if she was... a five year old.
Arnav had a sheepish grin on his face. At least the stunt he pulled was shocking enough to stop her from putting further stress on her already battered brains. "Yeah... you're a good girl..." He said quietly, pulled out his hankie and handed it over. "So please... just... calm down. And I'll explain everything... but you... just need to listen... patiently... without freaking out... deal?"
"Whoa! Look who is up!" Cabir's startling voice boomed from behind them and made Arnav shoot up to his feet in an instant.
Cabir paused midway as he noticed the toffees in Arnav's hand and the tears on Khushi's face. Mukti tagged in through the door and stood frozen at the sight before her eyes.
"What's up with the toffees Arnav?" asked Cabir with a well-hidden smirk on his face.
