Part 11
Dadaji had summoned his sons to have breakfast together for the day. Confused and attempting to hunt the reason in their mind, the three sons took their places at the table with their father at the head. The kids of the house had gone out for their work. Sukku and Umesh had gone for work at their shop, while Jwala and Bunty had gone to school. Dolly had just given birth to her son recently and was taking care of her prince. Kirti had gone to meet her friend. She had been trying to get her designs sold to established designers. The Gangwal House had been increasingly getting silent day by day with the activity of the kids getting lesser in the house, each one busy with their own lives. Ramesh had rented a small place outside for his music classes, which hadn't flourished the way he had expected it too. Nevertheless he was happy. It had been more than a year now, from when he had left the business and started giving music classes.
The breakfast went silently. The ladies of the house were serving food unknown to the topic of discussion.
"Bauji! What's the matter? You had called us? Something important?" Viren was growing impatient. His mind was already instructing him to object any talks regarding business, as Ramesh wasn't part of it. "If it's regarding our business, we can do it in the shop also Bauji..."
"Viren!!!! I know where to talk and with whom to talk...Also when to talk...Now silently have your breakfast..." Dadaji retorted, without lifting his gaze from his plate.
Viren instantly felt offended. His father had talked to him sarcastically in front of everyone. He didn't like it. On the other hand, Ramesh clearly understood his brother didn't want him to interfere in the business anymore. But he remained silent, as always. He looked at his wife questioning, raising his eyebrows, to know if his wife knew anything. Lakshmi shook her head.
"Bahu! I think it's getting late for you...You also have your breakfast and leave for work," told Dadaji with care.
"It's Ok Bauji! I'll have later..." replied Lakshmi awkwardly. Dadaji lifted his face and glared at her. Immediately, Lakshmi took her place next to her husband. Vimla held Rupan's hand before she could send out her comment.
"I wanted to discuss about Diya's marriage...your Bua's granddaughter...Remember her?" began Dadaji, sitting back after completing his plate.
"Of course Bauji! Our cousin Uthra's daughter...What about it Bauji?" asked Viren with extra concern. Ramesh and Mohan listened attentively.
"You know their financial condition...Uthra has been a single mother, and has been staying with your Bua all these years...So I thought, before they hesitate and ask, we will do what we can, and even more...After all Diya is also like my granddaughter..." Everyone nodded in agreement. "What has to be done? I'll decide and let you all know...But for now I have decided each one of you would be giving Rs 40000!"
Lakshmi instantly looked at Ramesh tensed. Ramesh looked serious, calculations running in his mind, if he would be able to manage it.
"No problem Bauji! I will give it to you in the evening..." replied Viren with pride.
"We will give it in the evening too, Bauji!" answered Rupan. "Ramesh?" She was waiting for an answer from him. She had got excited seeing the tensed faces of Ramesh and Lakshmi.
"Bauji! I will give around Rs 20000 today. Please give me some time to arrange for the remaining amount. I mean...just recently we had spent everything we had on Lakshmi's mother's surgery..." Ramesh tried to explain.
"We will get the mediclaim amount in a week...We will immediately give the remaining amount then..." Lakshmi completed the sentence.
"What happened Chote? Classes not going well?" asked Viren suddenly, out of the blue. "You have your own business now...This amount must be so easy for you..."
"Every business has its own ups and downs Bhaiya...You know that...Mine hasn't taken off yet...So...Yes...I am short of money now...But if it's so urgent and can't wait for a few days...I'll borrow and settle it within today..." told Ramesh casually, finally looking at his father. Every word Ramesh uttered was filled with confidence. It was straight, casual, with no hidden meaning.
"Chote! This arrogance is the reason..."
"Viren!!!" Dadaji interrupted. "What's this? Why are you behind him? He said he is arranging money, right? Then?"
Dadaji, though initially, was completely against his youngest son's ousting from the business and starting his own one and that too in music, had slowly come to terms with it. His son was earning enough to run his family. Moreover, his son had informed point blank that he was going to do what he wanted.
"Ramesh! Go as per what you said...But I want the entire amount within 5 days." Dadaji sentenced.
Dadaji and Dadi left the table. Ramesh continued to have his breakfast.
"Wonderful Chote! So now you are doing drama, Uh? I'll borrow and give and what not? Bauji might have decided to remain silent to your crazy music class theory, but I am not. Understand Chote! It's not too late. Leave all that and enter the business again. I'll talk with Bauji also...You will have a regular income then, and needn't struggle like this..." said Viren, contempt overflowing. He hadn't noticed his parents hadn't left the room.
Ramesh had been a man who had grown immune to all these taunts. He had trained himself to remain silent for the sake of the peace of the family, for his own family's status in the house. He believed his silence would help the family stay together. In addition, he was completely dependent on his family, for income and support to take care of his kids. He would be grateful to everyone for that. Yet, he definitely had become more relaxed in the past one year, out of the family business. His daughter was happily married now, and his sons were doing well too. His life had been less stressful. He didn't see a point why he had to fight with his brothers for his respect now, when he never did it in the past. Nevertheless, he couldn't stop sending out a snide comment.
"As if I had been receiving a regular income when I was in the business Bhaiya," told Ramesh without looking at his brother, with a side smile. "I am happy doing what I am doing...So..." He looked at his brother now and smiled with content and satisfaction. "Lakshmi! Shall we go? I'll drop you at school and then I will go and visit few schools for tie ups with us..."
Dadaji and Dadi left the room before Ramesh and Lakshmi could see them. Viren looked at the retreating figure of his brother. He sat there alone for a long time, even after Mohan, Rupan and Vimla left. He wondered, "What was I even talking about at the table. It made no sense. Why did I attack Ramesh and for what reason? Ramesh wasn't financially dependent on the business. So I couldn't comment on him for being irresponsible at work. I couldn't comment on his kids as their lives were settling well. What was the need to attack Ramesh, especially with Bauji around? What did I want to prove?" He felt foolish and helpless. He still couldn't figure out what troubled him with respect to Ramesh.
--------
"I think you have to talk to Viren," told Dadi as she got her husband's bag ready. Dadaji looked at her questioningly. "It's not a secret. We do know our sons don't get along well..."
"Rubbish!" told Dadaji casually. "Saroj! Problems like this happen among brothers. Don't take it seriously. And it's nothing new. As you said, it's been happening for years now. Yet, haven't the three stuck together? Living under the same roof? Hmm? So don't think about his unnecessarily."
"You aren't understanding. Our sons are together because Ramesh is silent. The day he speaks. The day he fights and counter attacks...The family will break..." Dadi tried to reason with her husband. She had a bad feeling about her fears coming true.
"That day will not come. Ramesh will never do such a thing. And Ramesh isn't the only reason...Viren and Mohan play a part too in keeping the family together. Look at the way both of them are handling business without complaining, even though Ramesh turned his back." Dadaji argued.
"Business is different..."
"Saroj! I am getting late...You have you medicines and rest. I'll come for lunch. And don't worry...nothing like what you are thinking will happen. I have complete trust on my sons..."
********
"First you...then Nisha...and now Sukku...What's your game plan, Ramesh? Why are you hell bent in spoiling all your kids' lives?" Viren blasted Ramesh. The entire family, along with the cousins- Umesh, Dolly, Kirti, Jwala, Sukku and Bunty were the onlookers.
"Bhaiya! It's very simple. Sukku has got admission in National School of Drama and wants to pursue his studies there. That's it..." Ramesh stood calm and firm.
"That means he is leaving the business, right? Uh? Chote! Remember...your duty lies in serving your family. Whatever you are is because of our family business and Bauji's hard work. And instead of continuing the legacy, you stepped out and now egging your son to do the same?" Viren exploded with rage.
Ramesh closed his eyes. He could feel a dj vu moment. Every decision he had to take for his kids, his kids wanted to take for themselves had gone through a similar fight. Every stage of their life had to cross this barrier to reach the next level. He looked at his father, a very unhappy man. His face showed his dissent.
"Bauji! I know you aren't happy. But please understand. Sukku's life is not in the shop. His dreams are really big and high and we need to give him the freedom to stretch his wings to fly high, to reach it. He did work in the shop for over 2 years, gained experience and has matured too. He is a responsible lad now who can take care of himself. I think it's best we give him permission to chase his dreams, Bauji!"
"And who will pay for his studies? Look Chote! Neither you or your kids are working for the..."
"You needn't worry about that Bhaiya! I'll take care, all by myself. I have reached a stage now where I can help my kids on my own without extending my hands for help, especially when help is definitely not being offered." Ramesh countered.
"Ramesh!" Dadaji spoke, his voice clearly indicating that he hadn't accepted Ramesh's stand.
"Dadaji!" Sukku called, before his grandfather could say anything, as he walked in between his father and grandfather. "This decision to pursue my studies is mine. This is what I want to do Dadaji! Sitting in the shop isn't what I want to do. I want to make a mark in the film industry. At the same time, I promise I will not do anything that would dishonor the name of our family. I promise, I would only bring pride to our family. Please allow me to pursue my education."
Ramesh looked proudly at his son. His impulsive son had grown to be more patient with time.
"First Nisha and Kabir...You did drama to send them to London and now this?"
"Drama?!" exclaimed Ramesh. "Kabir has gone to do his course in London School of Dance...and Nisha is also doing her studies in Child Psychology in London. They aren't roaming around wasting time. They are serious about their lives and are doing something they are passionate about. If tomorrow, Bunty also wants to go out to do something he wishes for...He will..." told Ramesh, anger slowly rising. "When will my family ever understand," he thought.
"Enough!" told Dadaji haughtily. "Ramesh! Do whatever you want...You have never heard my words any day, and you are never going to. Why do you even have to inform me about your decision? It's your kids...your money...your family...Go ahead! Why is our support even needed?"
Ramesh looked in disbelief. He had always considered the family to be his own. Even though he hadn't been part of the business decisions for the past 2 years, he felt he was still part of the family. But he should have realised it wasn't the case. No body except his mother had shown happiness over his opening of his own Music Academy. Though a small one, he felt really proud and happy about his achievement. But his family wasn't happy.
"When did we even matter to you?" continued Viren.
"And because of your kids, my daughter's life has been spoiled too...Jwala didn't get into the top college..."
"Maa please! I didn't get into that college because..." Jwala began to argue.
"Shut up Jwala! Don't speak when elders are speaking...See what they have learned from your kids' Ramesh..." taunted Rupan.
Ramesh wanted to shout. He wanted to blast them for running the same movie for years together now. But he remained silent. He had made his point clear. His son has made his point clear. In a matter of few minutes, his brother and bhabhi will grow tired and leave.
Sukku felt disheartened. Nobody was happy with his achievement. Getting into NSD wasn't easy. He turned to see his father, who gave a quick wink and smiled. He realised he got his strength from his father.
--------
"Why did you do this Umesh Bhaiya?" Sukku was in surprise and shock. He was looking at Umesh's restaurant proposal. "Why aren't you pursuing it? Why don't you talk to..."
"Who? My father? Dadaji? You think they will allow?" asked Umesh with a sad smile.
"You could have talked to Papa! Why didn't you tell me this before?" Sukku wasn't happy with his brother not informing him about his idea to start his own business.
"Because if I had...You wouldn't have applied for NSD..." replied Umesh.
"But what about your dream?" questioned Sukku.
"Sukku! Dadaji is old now...and Papa also has health complications...So it's up to me to run the business now along with Mohan Chachu. Once you are back...We both will handle both our business and dreams together...But now...Your dream is more important. I can achieve mine seeing your success...I will also use your popularity..." chuckled Umesh.
"I can become your brand ambassador also..." Sukku spoke with excitement.
Umesh laughed.
"Thanks Bhaiya!" Sukku said gratefully. If his brother had talked about his dreams openly, probably he wouldn't have been able to pursue his dreams strongly. Either he would have been made to sit in the shop with Umesh chasing his dreams...or both their dreams would have been buried.

"I am feeling so lonely without the kids..." told Lakshmi as she took the tea from the tray brought in by Ramesh. Ramesh too sat beside her with a cup of tea. It has been 3 years since Nisha had gone to London with her husband. She had visited them a couple of times every year. Sukku still had one more year in Delhi to complete his course. Their youngest son, Bunty surprised everyone scoring great marks and securing a medical seat. He had just joined his college in Chennai last month. Ramesh's music academy had slowly developed into a popular academy in the city. His business had been flourishing with the number of students increasing every day. Ramesh was happy. Lakshmi attributed his success to his determination and hard work.
There was a noise from downstairs. It was Rukma calling everyone to the courtyard. She was having a phone in her hand and Dadi looked so happy seeing the picture.
"See...Nisha di has graduated. She has topped the university..." told Rukma as Ramesh and Lakshmi ran downstairs happily.
Umesh, Aman, and Dolly all entered the courtyard with their phones, having a copy of the same picture sent by Nisha.
"Why do you even have a phone..." complained Lakshmi to Ramesh, both unable to hide their wide smile.
Dadi showed the picture to Dadaji, who looked so proud at his granddaughter. Vimla happily passed the phone to Viren, Mohan and Rupan. Mohan looked happy but Viren and Rupan couldn't force a genuine smile. The kids whom they have always taunted, always insulted, were achieving greater heights day by day.
"Dolly's business is going nicely...Umesh is slowly heading the business and is doing extremely well...I should be happy, right?" wondered Viren.
Rupan pushed Mohan aside, behind a pillar, after glaring at Ramesh and Lakshmi.
"Nisha will become a successful counselor, Sukku will become a popular actor and Bunty will become a doctor...What about our daughters? What will happen to their future...This Ramesh is hell bent on spoiling our kids' future..."
Mohan looked clueless. "What are you even talking...What has Ramesh got to do with this?"
"Don't you see? Slowly people will recognise us using Ramesh's name...Where will our respect go then? Only way is to distance ourselves from Ramesh, and have our own name Mohan...Else our daughters will never get married..."
"What are you saying..." Mohan was confused.
"Ramesh has his own academy? His kids are all going to be popular...Yet...He still holds share in the inheritance...Who will get more respect in the society now? Who will be known more as Nemichand Gangwal's son?"
Viren heard the entire conversation.
*******
(Present)
"Why? Why can't he do that? And don't you dare question me like that..." scowled Viren when Umesh questioned him about his behavior with Ramesh.
"Papa! What you are asking him to do in unreasonable..." Umesh was desperate to make his father understand.
"Look Umesh...We both know the status of our business...Isn't it also Ramesh's responsibility to do something to revive it?"
"But...there is a way to ask Papa...You cannot count and calculate..."
"Enough Umesh! Because of Ramesh, the entire family is suffering now...What has he done for the family? If he wants to divide the property...let him do it...If he has some conscience, he would know he doesn't deserve a penny in the inheritance...If he wants to leave the house...let him...It's not like he would be missed..."
Dadaji was at the door hearing the conversation. He remembered his wife's words. "The day he speaks. The day he fights and counter attacks...The family will break."
