IKRS~Monday 17th August episode 7 my take
Opening scene.. spectacles used as a ploy, illustrates.. an aid that magnifies vision which falters by age.. Here the spectacles belong to dada ji , who not only wishes to see traditional severe norms set for widows but enforces his vision upon the easily swayed religious fanatics, to maintain his own hold on his little empire where he is the unquestionable spiritual guru. Also Viplav's father trying them on ,to me shows, moments where he as the small fry for the sake of peace, tries to comply and fit in the system by emulating the way his father sees things. But his wife reminds Viplav's father, not even a million years can he possess the stature of his father. Viplav sees his mother puts down his father , like his grandfather belittles his dadi.. and here even Viplav stands up for the underdog.. his dad.. noteworthy is the fact that even though Viplav deals with this small altercation between his parents tenderly.. he shows qualities of intervening when required.. and doesn't let brush issues under the carpet.. he is fair and smooths his mother's ruffled feathers.. but Vilpva's mother, in line with her inherent vile nature defends herself before her son, by degrading his father. In the main she gives the impression of being tolerant, but alongside she complains to Viplav , yet taunts that his father doubts her devotion.. even though she married him knowing well that he was far from perfect!
Moments of Viplav's maturity and sense of care steadily unfolds in the story .He is seen to defend the weaklings of the house ,his sister, his father and his dadi. He may act flippant, but shows awareness and can see where the weak are oppressed by the strong!
Tirpathi continues with his spiritual pretension. when he shows alarm by the reported uproar and fervent rebellion against Dhani. Deviously he rewards his illegitimate son for whipping up the rabble against Dhani , by condescending to visit his mother.. on the pretence he needed peace and quiet that only his mother gives.
Tripath's lecherous leering goes on wooing his concubine Durga of 25 yrs .. but the son sees through his dirty old father's way.. so he too uses guile to hoodwink his father and mothers, by pulling out a nail he planted from his father's shoe to trick his father into believing he is a dutiful caring son. A son whose duty is to provide protection and safeguard his father's life! but in reality this son is a thorn in his father's flesh.. a niggling ,gnawing pin prick.. we say for dada ji! as you sow ,so shall you reap
The rich and influential use the public to seek out their personal revenge! mob heads to the ashram. High drama! fast paced with activity, to show uncontrolled, unreasonable mob mentality. The frenzied rabble arrives to mete out punishment to Dhani by decree of a spiritually motivated justice as they the devout see it ! Accusations are hurled ! demands are made for the accused to be handed over! widow's under siege! telephone line severed .. crowd charged fully to lynch .The weak defend themselves rather heroically. with whatever resources are available! such presence of mind! the vulnerable put up resistance using all means to ward off the evil!.. musical score added to the high pitched battle drama!
Then the knight arrives! as Molotov cocktails used to burn the widows alive!
Dhani thinks.. recalls the culprit and takes a decision.. and boldly gives herself up for the sake of the widows, fights their case.. Viplav.. arrives.. sees her mother yelling and intervenes!! by jove! he shows such grit! how he dares to face the crowd! Fearlessly! how he not for once despite the" who are you any way?? when being threatened by the dangerously violent crowd , reveals who he really is ??
Defends Dhani using man to man words like reasoning with the mob, as men picking on a woman? calls them blind! questions their powers of reasoning! reminds them about human values and similarities, refers to the fact that have they not got women at home? a daughter. a sister, mother? questions their sense of justice.. punishing a weak vulnerable woman/widow[ three w's], questions their religious beliefs! they challenge his intervention ! authority and retorts with confidence when he speaks about asking them to think within the parameters of of the law of the land! call the police if she is wrong Viplav stands as the voice of educated literate ,as opposed to the .. uneducated and ill- informed ,misguided and misled masses! For his resistance he bears the brunt of getting stoned, a punishment which was meant for the girl! Viplav gets hurt but as a man he heroically protects a helpless woman who in the end he finds out is Dhani!.. love knows not pain! it just protects the other.. forgetting all malice, all revenge! Viplav is admirable .. in his the courage of his convictions! Did he rise to this because he felt, heard a woman stand bravely up to a mob of mad men? Viplav here shows us practically what it means to protect and shield someone!.. compared to what his brother says to his dadi ji about protecting him..tear jerker episode, right from the moment Dhani gives her self up till the look of... you! you! from both in the end.. do both surprise each other?..
