Most people on this forum are bi or trilingual (or possibly fluent in even more languages!). Even if you're bilingual, one of your languages may be your stronger language e.g. English is my stronger language. Complex and technical stuff I explain best in English. However I still find Urdu/Hindi better for expressing love/affection.

In Bollywood cinema, in the past, there was a fad for the hero to say "I love you" to the female lead, even though no other English was spoken in the rest of the film!

What language do you feel most comfortable using when expressing love and affection? Do you use 'Indian' terms of endearment or English ones?

ermm, well, if you look old bw era 50's-60's and even 70's, i don't think "i love you" in english was quite a thing. They used to confess their love in very dense way! I mean for me it has always been very intense and dramatic.

If you look at the poetry or shayari aspect - i think nothing is more beautiful than urdu language. The eloquence and sublimeness is unmatchable to other languages. Though, English is fine for more casual expression and i feel it has that simplicity which you all need at times.

I think choose whatever you're most comfortable with. Afterall, love is love ?! lol

sometimes love can be expressed even without those three words of english, i love u word is just to propose, to express we use our mother language

Yes, Urdu is indeed a very expressive language. It shares similarities with English in that it has borrowed from other languages. The original Urdu was a cantonment language and owes much to the Turkish invaders of India. (If my memory serves me right Urdu is the word for cantonment) The basis of Urdu however remains a form of Arabic.

At least significant numbers of people on the planet have a facility with more than one language. The English (barring the descendants of migrants) in the UK are stubbornly bilingual. They just shout louder (in English) when speaking to foreigners. Some idiot psychologists back in the late 70s/early 80s even invented the notion of bilingual interference but interestingly this term was only applied to Asian youngsters but never to European leaders in Europe.

What a curious thing to say. Firstly if one is proficient in English aswell as mother tongue, why propose in English only then resort back to mother tongue to express one's feeling? I understand the status thing about the use of English in the subcontinent, so perhaps there's a bit of that operating in using English to propose.

I think the most wonderful thing is to love and being loved.In this case you can express your feelings in which language do you want or even without word.
