Rajkumar Santoshi has had some incredible female characters in his films. Lajja was fantastic.
Can you believe Manisha Koirala didn't get a single nomination for her outstanding performance?!

And what about Mahima Choudhary. That "hum utth jayenge" scene was literally the first time I have ever experienced a round of applause in the cinema (the second and last time was English Vinglish).

Guess they thought Kareena Kapoor playing the multi-layered "Poo" in K3G was far more of a demanding role.

Not surprising. I would so love to make a career in building nomination list for award ceremonies. I won't leave any worthy performance (regardless of how popular) behind. 😉

Regarding Lajja, no complain at all on the performance front (actor and actresses). It was crowded with many characters to support the 4 episodic sub-plots but all of them did justice. The ladies overall held their own, even the ones with small scope (Jaya Bhattacharya - who plays "Lata", Dina Pathak, Farida Jalal, Rohini Hattangadi etc... )😆

Coming to the main ladies

Manisha: Excellent. She looked beautiful and carried the movie well. She was very good at playing emotionally oppressed characters.

Mahima: I was blown away. Great dialog delivery and fiery performance in that cathartic mandap scene. Well directed, Yes, people clapped in the theatre where I watched too. Rajkumar Santoshi woman!

Madhuri: WOW! Looked so beautiful. I always loved her in dramatic roles that require her to say strong dialogs. Her voice, diction is perfect and she shows anger, intensity well. I loved her in the scene with Manisha right after Agnipariksha play, what an outburst and also her final confrontation with Tinu Verma and the whole scene with the crowd. Well directed, acted by both the ladies👏

Rekha: WOW!! Everything - dialog delivery, accent etc. AMAZING. All her scenes were good, in particular the last tragic scene. 😭

Each one evoked a sense of repulsion at the societal issues and as a viewer, you wanted to reach out and ensure they were ultimately happy.

If there was an equilvalent of Screen Actors Guild award for Cast in a Motion Picture" in India, I would pick Lajja for 2001.

Please do and let me know what you thought of the movie. It is one of my all time favorite films and certainly one of the best women centric Hindi film ever.

It is brilliantly made and acted. You will identify with the protagonist. 👏👏👏

The rape scene in Damini is one of the most realistic and disturbing ever shown in a hindi filmEspecially as they show Holi being celebrated and Damini trying desperately to save the poor girl. Such a powerful film for its time. Sunny's dialogues in the movie are popular even today!

OMG you just became my favourite member of all-time with this. 😃
Agree with everything you said.
Nice to know there are other people out there who appreciate the excellent work in this movie.
And also, you're one of the few Sridevi fans (as well as me) that appreciates her rival Madhuri's work (who I also adore just as much). Mads as Janki was one of her very best roles, glad she won the Zee Cine Award for it.

Thank you😳

I am a connoisseur of cinema. I have my favorites too but not blind to recognize other talents. I have been more emotionally stirred by Sri's work and think she displayed more versatility. However, Madhuri was also a complete performer. I just wished both of them got better roles in their careers. They ruled the roost at the time when movies weren't of that high artistic quality. But still glad they could do what they did,

So yes a big Sri fan with huge respect for Ms Dixit⭐️

Watched this movie a few weeks back.
It was too good.
Meenaxi was too good in the film and Sunny Deol was just awesome.👏

I never watched this film as a kid because some scenes were too disturbing and horrific for me.
